Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

Kanon:

"I joined Newgrounds in late 2008, around the time Dark Cut 3 was released, at the time I found myself obsessed with it and joined because I wanted to review it, Although I'll be honest before joining I did lurk Newgrounds for a year or two it was a friend of mine who doesn't get on anymore, his name was hoodpru, but he also had a major role to play in my joining of Newgrounds whether it was for games similar to Dark cut or the video game collections section. A little while later, I found myself to start getting a bit bored of watching the same flash over and over so I started getting an interest in the audio portal where throughout the years I've found many gems among the portal. I had got my name from a character in Wild Arms 2, who was one of my favorite characters throughout the game, I then later began to write a story about my own character named Kanon but it didn't take off too well even for it being my first chapter."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Kanon:

"I believe I have, I went from some immature kid to someone who will take the time to stop and listen to those around me, as well as try to help out where I am needed. I know there is still so much more to learn while I am here as a user, but to others I have become a friend you can count on for practically anything both as a user and real life. My life out of Newgrounds as Ironic as it may be, before I joined I was always timid and to myself, very anti social, thankfully though I've grown out of it only to become this bold and sarcastic user who has made many more friends both on Newgrounds and out of Newgrounds."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Kanon:

"Pretty much anyone on my list, though many may ponder what they've done to get on there, my answer to them is that they've all been cool users and made my time here very enjoyable. Retrospective, logic, Dosensuppen, Asandir (YOU), Murray, Gimmick/Legnus if he can decide what he wants to use are a few that I communicate with on a daily or frequent basis. It so hard to say how each has individually affected me, but everyone who's gotten to know me has always been there to steer me in the right direction if something came up, and you got to be thankful for that."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

Kanon:

"Fortunatly no, and I hope to keep it that way, as I'm not here to make enemies (I don't think anyone is really except Dosensuppen who's still accepting applications). If anything I do look for is someone who has courage enough to express their opinions and debate with me on a certain subject. For this I have to thank Light because of the "hotsaucing" thread I made a month or so back, as that is a perfect example of what I look forward to in a topic debate and discussion."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Kanon:

"I think personally they're doing fine with what they're doing, although I wish there would be a moderator of some sort to be on from the times of midnight until five or six in the morning, as I've noticed around that time, everyone is turning in and it's like a massive hole in forum security if you will."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Kanon:

"I've put a lot of thought into being a Forum Moderator and how it would impact both my social life and my real life, Honestly I think it's a goal many have but I don't think people take the time to look at both sides of the coin before saying something. I believe that if Tom thinks it's a position he thinks I am ready for or deserve, I'll accept it and try to make the place better so everyone else would be happy, while still upholding the rules and so on. As of now however, I feel it's a position I am not yet ready for but I'll keep doing my best to help report trolls/spam and the such to Murray or EyelovePoozy as they've both been there to share their advice with me and tell me what to look for or what to report, I think I can thank them though as I've seen my posting habits have been getting better and better as I go."

Halloween will come soon. Are you looking forward to experience Halloween on Newgrounds and what are your expectations?

Kanon:

"Honestly Halloween has been a great time of the year for me, but I think with the redesign in progress, the halloween theme will probably be the same as last year. So I'm mutual about halloween on Newgrounds as far as what the theme will look like, but I'm anxious to see what the contest will be this time."

The redesign is rumoured to happen within the next months, are you looking forward to it? What kind of changes do you want to see?

Kanon:

"I was a bit disappointed to hear it was moved from said month to the other said month, but at the same time I'm not really disappointed as I can understand with all the user requests and such being sent in constantly, I'm hoping it'll be done and here before 2012, but again I'm being patient and really waiting for them to be 100% ready themselves before submitting something that's full of flaws."

Your current profile picture shows you and a very cute dog. How many pets do you have and how important are pets for you?

Kanon:

"I currently have three cats, and two very dumb dogs. They are all important, I'll have days where they give me trouble and days where they will listen quiet well, but they're fun to have around. The dog in my picture is the one I refer to as a wookie, if you've heard Chewbacca's growl from Starwars, you know the growl from my dog pretty well."

I heard that you spent your vactions in South Dakota. Can you tell our readers a little bit about those 2 weeks?

Kanon:

"We never spent previous vacations there before, most of them were down in Florida. Anyways. We had went to South Dakota because my mother had wanted to meet her father for the first time in her life before he passes away as he's currently in his mid 80's. After we had met up and spent a day with him, he had taken us to see the sites which consisted of The Badlands, Wall Drug,MT Rushmore, The Corn Palace and the Rushmore caves. It was a great vacation as I got to meet my grandfather for the first time as well as explore the West a bit, but the only thing I hated about the trip was having to sit through 108 degree heat with a broken air conditioner in the van. Despite the broken air conditioning, it was still a great two weeks and I wish that I could only enjoy them over."

Kanon:

"I've never been good with answering questions like this, so I'll be honest, only time will tell what lies ahead for me, but For the time being I want to start making this place better, and I'll do my best to do so with a little help from everyone else of course."

Interview with Kanon

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

FairSquare:

"I think I found Newgrounds somewhere in 2008. I was playing this game where you had to steer a rocket past all kinds of obstacles by using your mouse. If I remember correctly the goal was to blow up some guy at the end of each level. I love blowing people up. In games. Anyway, the music in that game is what led me here. I didn't play the game on Newgrounds itself, but I wanted to know who made the music that was used in the game and it turned out that it was made by an NG-user. The song was hosted on the Audio Portal. That's when I started to explore the Audio Portal and after that, the Flash Portal and all the other features on this diverse website. The reason I eventually joined was to host the (incredibly crappy) music I had made. You can see that my sign-up date and the date of my first audio submission are the same."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

FairSquare:

"Definitely, but it's hard to say how big the part was that Newgrounds played in my personal evolving from an insecure and socially awkward kid without a clue what he's actually doing into a more or less secure person who isn't socially awkward, but who still has no clue what he's actually doing. In all seriousness, I was 16 when i joined. I'm 19 now. Of course I changed. I think the changes I went through in real life are the same as the changes I made as a user. Basically, I became more mature.

Who I am in real life doesn't really differ much from who I am on here. Except that I'm more open here."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

FairSquare:

"There are many users that I like, but only few of them have really affected me. I think the user who affected me the most is alternativesolution. We have PMed a lot and we still do from time to time. It began when I PMed her to check out my music and from there we kinda just kept PMing. Both funny PMs and pretty serious PMs about all kinds of stuff. I consider her a friend :)"

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

FairSquare:

"When I started to post on the BBS I really only went to the Audio Forum. And the moderators who moderate the Audio Forum are pretty lenient and flexible, creating a nice relaxed atmosphere. So yeah, I liked that. But I heard from other users on the Audio Forum that the General Forum was a shithole full of moderators who were very eager with their ban-hammer. However, I started to visit the General Forum more and more and discovered that it's not that bad. The moderators aren't that strict and do a pretty good job."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

FairSquare:

"Absolutely not. The reason I come here is to have fun and blurt out a lot of non-sense. If I'd become a moderator I would have to be way to serious for my liking and coming here would start feeling like a duty. I don't want that."

The redesign is rumoured to happen within the next months, are you looking forward to it? What kind of changes do you want to see?

FairSquare:

"I have mixed feelings about the redesign. I'm very curious how it will look and I heard that the redesign doesn't only change the look of this site, but also some things to the portals. And I'm especially interested in the changes it will bring to the Audio Portal. On the other hand.. I really like the design of Newgrounds as it is now. It's one of the prettiest and user-friendliest website designs I know and the redesign has to be really good to top the current design. So yeah, we'll just have to wait and see.."

With 163 audio sumbissions, you are a huge contributor to the Audio Portal. Can you tell our readers what kind of music you make, and you how started to make music?

FairSquare:

"Tell the readers what kind of music I make? That's really hard to do. I make whatever I want to make and most of the time it doesn't really fit into a specific genre. I guess the readers have to go and listen to it to hear it for themselves ;p

I started making music after I discovered the Audio Portal. All these users made music by themselves and I decided to try it out myself. Before I actually hosted my first song here, I made about 7 or 8 'songs' because I didn't want to be my first song on here to be really crappy. Well, I failed in that, because it is really crappy. It's even called 'Crappy'."

Would you like to work together with another audio artist on a song? If so, who is it, or is there maybe something already planned?

FairSquare:

"Well, I'm actually in a phase where I can't really be bothered to make music for some reason. So a collab can be a way to motivate myself to make something new. I already collaborated with agustana recently and I really liked to do that. Maybe we'll collab again.."

Your music was featured in the flash submission "Sellout - LordOfTheRings", which got a Daily 4th award. Are you proud about getting this award?

FairSquare:

"A bit. But not really. I mean, only a very small part of my song actually gets used and I made it with a whole other purpose. I was told that it would be in a flash where someone would do an 'epic' speech. And when the flash came out, I discovered that my music was used in it by accident. I only got credit for it when I PMed the author of the Flash and then I saw that I got an award. It's bit weird. The only part where my music got used is in the few seconds that you see the actual lord of the rings. It lasts like.. 10 seconds or something."

You were formerly known as MH16, then your username got changed to Mussirus and now you are named FairSquare. Please tell us the background story for each of those names. And most importantly: Are you happy with your current username?

FairSquare:

"MH16 stood for my name and age. M is the letter of my name. H is the letter of my surname. And 16 was my age at the time. I just grew tired of it, because it was a lame name with a number that didn't mean anything anymore. So I changed it to Mussirus.. which was a pretty cool name actually. I got it from a dinosaur called ''Mussaurus'' (dinosaurs always have cool names) and I altered that to ''Mussirus''. However, I got tired of that too because it started to sound too dark and heavy to me. I wanted something lighter and sillier. That's when 'FairSquare' was born. I'm still happy with my username now as it fits me. Not planning on changing it ever again. It's time I stick to my decisions :p"

FairSquare:

"I study Social Work. I don't really have a career plan though, I just think that this is the right direction for me to go. I mean, I love to help people out and actually mean something for other people. And if I can do that to make a living, then I'm happy :)"

FairSquare:

"Lots of sillyness. A bit of seriousness. And hopefully new music. Oh, and about that music.. I want to implement my voice in it. But i'm still struggling with that. You can hear me sing in the collab I did with agustana (It Never Ends) though, I sing the chorus in that song.

Yeah.. that's it. This is the end of the interview. Thanks for reading, it made my day even though I don't actually know who will read it and if you read it at all :D"

Interview with FairSquare

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

Light:

"I found Newgrounds sometime early in 2006. It was several months before I officially made an account. You see, when I was in the 7th grade, a friend told me about a dress-up hentai game on this site called "Newgrounds." I was interested because, well, 12 year old boys can be quite perverted, lol. I subsequently began to explore the other areas of Newgrounds and discovered great games like Alien Hominid, Domo-kun Angry Smashfest, and many great flash movies. I didn't know back then that people made flash movies, so I was especially entertained by it. A week before my 13th birthday, I decided to join. I've been visiting this place ever since."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Light:

"Both. I tried to be funny when I was a younger poster. I was never really serious and I probably sucked at debating and forming coherent arguments. But I improved substantially at doing what I do best. I matured and stopped trying to be funny. From that point on I just acted like myself on these forums."

Light:

"Oh, there is a bunch of people I like and love. Cootie, Dosensuppen, Ryanson, Lintire, and Space-Whale are my best friends on NG. And there are quite a few other people I like, such as Powerage, TheColourAwsome, SaltshakerClock, anauthor, you of course, Murray, IncendiaryProduction, WeHaveFreshCookies, CashClock, Addict, Yert, GiantDouche, Bees(Shocker, right?), Rummy0, Sevkat and probably a few more people whom I've forgotten."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Light:

"The vast majority do a fantastic job at what they do, but there are three of which I find myself regularly questioning their reasoning behind locking threads and banning people. Of course, I wouldn't want to name these mods, as I'm not so sure that they can take criticism very well."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Light:

"Nope.

Although I did aspire to be a review moderator at one point. However, I concluded that the job would be thankless and too tedious for my liking. Since I have a deity whistle, I can flag reviews all by myself and the review mods would be notified immediately.

Yeah, they're not called deity whistles for nothing."

Light:

"Actually I don't care all that much about the redesign. Call me crazy, but I don't really care because NG is already nearly perfect in my opinion.

Of course, there are improvements that could be made, but I don't think it would warrant redesigning the entire website. With that being said, a redesign would be nice, but I wouldn't need it to keep coming back to this place."

You very recently decided to leave the Newgrounds forums. Within a short time, you came thankfully back. So my question is: Why did you leave, did you watch the forums in that time and most importantly, why did you come back?

Light:

"I decided to leave for what I thought was forever because I actually had a day or two on the BBS where I really couldn't find any threads worth posting in, which has never happened before. The threads had seemed to have gotten so dull, repetitive, and borderline rule-breaking that I thought it would be best to leave. Not to mention that there were posts being made that inundated the BBS, posts that were simply awful.

After I left the BBS, I decided to lurk, which means watching posts and threads on the BBS without posting in them. I did this for more than a week, and conditions weren't really improving. I decided to come back for the one of the same reasons that I left: because there were so many stupid posts being made. I felt that I needed to do what I do best on these forums.

I needed to respectfully state my opinion and respectfully prove idiots on the BBS wrong."

Judging from your username, you seem to be a huge fan of Star Wars. Are you still a fan of the franchise and do like your username? Or did you ever thought about requesting a namechange?

Light:

"I don't care for Star Wars very much. I just created my account with this username because I had seen Star Wars Episode 3 the year before and I was obsessed with the franchise. Now, I don't care very much about the franchise at all anymore. I still like it, but not as much as I used to.

Oh, and I have requested my name to be changed to both Tom and Wade, but to no avail. I wanted to change my name to "X" at first, because that's my favorite letter of the alphabet. Both Tom and Wade passively refused my requests by not granting my namechange. They didn't even respond back. lol.

I also wanted to change my name to "Light." No success there either."

You won the Most Underrated award for the NGBBS mid-year awards 2011. Do you think that you deserve this award and how did you feel winning it?

Light:

"Not really. I feel honored, but I don't think I deserved it. People think my posts are fantastic. I don't. People think I'm smart. I don't.

I just post how I feel about certain subjects and attempt to clarify things to the misinformed posters among us."

And you can also expect me to post very frequently, as usual."

Interview with Light

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

ToastedToastyToast:

"I have absolutely no idea whatsoever. Not a single clue. But you know what, I dont care either because it doesnt really matter. I dont need to know why or how I got here, all I need to worry about is that I'm here and all Im here to do is enjoy it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Your first account was tri-circle, can you tell our readers, why you abonded it, and how you got the idea for you fascinating username?

ToastedToastyToast:

"I originally left newgrounds for what I thought was going to be permanently. In fact in my time off of newgrounds I never touched my computer, TV or video games or anything. Never missed it once. Then a bunch of my friends started complaining I was never online on facebook (Dont know why, never used it much anyway) but I shrugged it off. A while later a couple of my more Arty friends told me about DeviantArt. I had an account (Tri-Circle) way back but never bothered with it. They managed to convince me to give it a shot so I uploaded a few of very outdated pieces of art and got a shocking response of over 500 pageviews within the first day. Not bad eh?

The username? Simple, where I live you take your breakfast to the bus stop just once and you land yourself the nickname Toast for the rest of your life. When I signed up I wanted a username that matched up. I came back to newgrounds a while later to tie up some loose ends and because I missed you guys. I thought about using my Tri-Circle account but I had just got used to my toasty username so I decided to create a new account. Havent really looked back since."

Are there users that you like, and how do they affect you?

ToastedToastyToast:

"Stickman91, funniest motherfucker even on the off days. Doesnt show his face around much but hes a nice guy all around and a person we can all relate to... Well, sorta anyway. Off topic, after a bet over an online game of hangman I now ow him my testicles. Fortunately he has not come to collect them... YET.NGGangsterPimp. Good guy, pretty funny, good animator and known him for a long time. Never knew him much but hes just a laugh to talk to and a really nice guy.Hiii111 speaks a little for himself. A very lazy animator, but recently hes hauling ass with his Camels Movie Series and pumping out some of THE funniest stuff I ever seen coupled with some pretty awesome animation. Hes been nice enough to show me his animation and scripts and let me help with ideas and even try my hand at writing a script myself. Sweet. And Asandir, hes a nice guy too. ToastedToastyToast:

You surely have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

ToastedToastyToast:

"They have there ups and downs. EyeLovePoozy has solved damn near all the problems ive had so far including helping take down crappy reviewers I pointed out. Whilst no mod has yet to sort out other issues and Renaenae banned me when somebody hacked my account and made a dick of himself in my name, even making fun of people I like and respect on the BBS, including Poozy (OH TEH NOES!) and was unable to be contacted because of the inbox and no other mods wanted to help clean up the mess the hacker had left behind because they didnt want to impose on other peoples modding."

ToastedToastyToast:

"Review mod. I would clean this place up. Unfortunately how often is it that someone gets to be a mod? And basically I am not very high up in list seeing as im not very friendly with the current mods. But then again, I got scouted and I never thought that would happen either, so who knows?"

September 22nd marked the 5th coming of the annual Newgrounds Madness Day. How did you experience that day, what is your opinion on it and can you tell us, if you have some favourite submissions?

ToastedToastyToast:

"Dissapointing. There were good animations I wont deny that but madness day was really lacking. Not nearly as many submissions as normal, I didnt get to finish my own. The madness site graphics were up for a single day (I remember them in the past being up for a while after) and it just didnt stand out in comparison to past years. It was pretty cool but madness has become a little too generalised in my opinion. Its lost its meaning."

You said that you got recently hacked by someone. Can you tell us, how you reacted, and what you did to make sure that it will not happen again? Did you ever think that someone would hack you on Newgrounds?

ToastedToastyToast:

"I got hacked. They made a dick of themselves. The mess is still here. But I didnt really respond badly. I just changed my password. All my passwords are different so nobody is going to get far if they had my password. To tell you the truth I dont really think much of it anymore. Did I ever think that someone would hack me? Im suprised they didnt. A while back my account was under attack by a small group of people me and my friends call "The Faggots" and they proxy hacked to avoid the IP lock out and somehow failed to work out my password which was at the time passw0rd. You are a scouted artist. So far, you have 4 pieces of art on your current account. Can we axpect more art from you, and if you, what kind of art?

ToastedToastyToast:

"My art is outdated. 4 pieces of months old art. Interestingly ive only been getting better. Ive gone from cartoonish line drawn people to drawing things that look "Almost Real" so many people have asked if my art is shopped or made using a rendering program. In actual fact I make all my art from scratch in Flash CS3, on an outdated laptop using a mouse pad. Who says you need top notch hardware and fancy apps? Im a very slow artist, im good at it but it takes me 4-5 days to make a single picture. I lack the motivation to make them on a regular basis. Although my artistic talents are going to use in other areas. But more on that later."

19 flash submissions were submitted by you. Woud you consider yourself a flash artist? Is there someone, who you would like to work together on a project?

ToastedToastyToast:

"From what I have submitted so far? NO. I have been doing flash for 5 years as a hobby, I have only ever experimented so far and got better and better each time. I havent submitted anything really serious and most of it was made very roughly and quickly. However from what I have in stall for you soon? Well. Use your imagination."

ToastedToastyToast:

"Flash projects. More art. Distasteful jokes. And my eventual slow and painful death. And if you dont like what the future holds for me, then just grin and bear it whilst seeking comfort in the fact that when I die im going to go to hell. Thanks for the interview buddy. And the rest of you I'll see in the fiery afterlife."

Interview with ToastedToastyToast

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

BilalZ:

"I found newgrounds around 2007, I was more interested in the movies and art then in the games and when I came to the conclusion that many young people were in this field and not just professionals, I wanted to animate too. I had loads of ideas and "Detective Funsize (page 1/page 2/page 3/page 4) was one of them, I am planning to animate more episodes soon, I also had an anime project planed but it fell apart as I did't have a storyline, that explained why the characters were fighting. To support my ideas I started saving up for flash while I got a Wacom Bamboo as a gift. I made the account to participate in the forums and submit art."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

BilalZ:

"Yes they do a great job in my opinion, but I think the inactive ones should be removed, so that new and active moderators can step up to moderate the site. The current active ones are great, but more active moderators could make the place better."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

BilalZ:

"No, rather not. I'm to weak, nice and forgiving and would let too many things slide, which wouldn't be good, apparently. Being too strict would be bad, but being lenient about rule breaking would be worse for the forums."

Newgrounds has good aspects, but also bad ones. Could you tell our readers one thing that you dislike about Newgrounds and another that you like the most?

BilalZ:

You are still an unscouted artist on Newgrounds. Do you think that you should be scouted? Where do you get the inspiration for your art?"

BilalZ:

"I don't get inspiration, it somehow comes to me, and I think that I should not be scouted in the moment, but I will probably end up getting scouted by another artist, if I work hard enough for this goal of mine. At the moment, I just enjoy making more art, without the pressure of having it showcased on the Art portal, since it helps me to try out different styles, like 3D art."

Interview with BilalZ

Posted by Asandir - September 26th, 2011

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

Natick:

"Well, I found out about Newgrounds when my cousin showed me "Halo Vs Counterstrike" a flash animation that kind of changed my sense of humor at the time. I followed the site for a few months after watching that and joined 11/1/08. I joined due to juvenile appeal and at the time, I wanted to be a cartoonist. I never got around to finishing the scripts I had made for any ideas for flash animations, though."

You surely have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Natick:

"I think some of them do their job well, such as Murray, but I find people like EyeLovePoozy to abuse their power to an unfair extent."

Would you like to become a moderator some day? If so, what kind of moderator?

Natick:

"I wouldn't trust myself with that kind of position. I usually don't handle well with responsibilities that big."

Newgrounds has good aspects, but also bad ones. Could you tell our readers one thing that you dislike about Newgrounds and another that you like the most?

Natick:

"I think the site's mature humor is both it's biggest weakness and it's biggest strength. This site can be both a cesspool for run-of-the-mill dick jokes but every now and then, you'll find something that takes itself more seriously than that yet still has a lot of appeal to adults and I appreciate those pieces of art on this site the most and I guess that's what keeps me coming back."

Natick:

"I am a huge fan of Madness, yes :) I missed the last 2 Madness Days but now that I'm back on the site, I'm pretty psyched for the upcoming one. The icon is something I copied from another user because I was having a hard time looking for an icon that fit the required resolution."

While browsing through your newsposts for research, I stumbled across an interesting blog about love. You said there, that love doesn't exist. Do you still think so, and can you explain your viewpoint to our readers?

Natick:

"That was written when I was 13 or 14 and I was going through relationship troubles with an older person. I regret writing that, actually. I was really young at the time and I don't think anyone would've liked to hear from an angsty, teenage boy what he thought about love after his first breakup. I know I hate hearing from other teenagers on Facebook about love. As for now, I am not in a relationship and I don't really plan on being in one, being that I'm a bit of a workaholic on my own original, unreleased artwork. I don't really know what love is but I don't really think something as strong as "There is no such thing" is really appropriate for me to say with how little I know on the subject."

What can we expect from you in the future, Natick?

Natick:

"I don't really think it will be possible for me to contribute anything to the flash or audio portal being that I am working on several documentaries at school on subjects varying from the recent Union protests in Wisconsin to video game controversy. I am also building up the courage and materials to propose to a musician I have admired for some time now who now goes by the name Mr. Tuskle. He used to be known as Xyqph. His primary genres are IDM and Drill'n Bass. (If you're into electronica, I highly reccomend looking up his compilations, "This Is Drill'n Bass" and "This is IDM" on YouTube) I desperately want to do a few abstract music videos for a lot of his tracks. In fact, my former forum sig was based on some conceptual art I'm drawing for his song, "Simplex". Thank you very much."

Newgrounds has good aspects, but also bad ones. Could you tell our readers one thing that you dislike about Newgrounds and another that you like the most?

SpaceWhale:

"The biggest thing for me is probably the fact that voting in the audio portal has no influence on a user's voting power. This makes the AP very unpopular, and songs submitted tend to not have very many votes."

You surely have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

SpaceWhale:

"I used to like them, and I still do, but not as much as I used to. I read a mod saying (I forget where) that he was trying to be more lenient with banning, which is, in my opinion, the exact opposite direction that the mods should be moving. General is stupid enough. (Sorry!)"

Would you like to become a moderator in the future, maybe a certain kind of mod?

SpaceWhale:

"You might think this is stupid, but I think that I would be a good forum moderator. There have been a ton of instances where I've seen spam threads and spam posts on the forums and a mod wasn't on, and if one was on, he wasn't deleting the thread. I'm on enough to the point where I think I could fix it."

I think everyone remembers your name change to Space-WhaleAudio, the uproar it caused and then the comeback to Space-Whale. What was your motivation to change your username, and what do you think about the uproar it caused?

SpaceWhale:

"The reason I wanted to change my username is because I googled "Space Whale" to see what popped up, and I remember seeing 2 bands that already had the name. For some reason, I thought adding "Audio" to the end of it would make it better. It made my name pop up high in the search list, but people (and eventually I) thought that it was redundant, since people already knew that I made music."

With 245 audio subimissions within 2 years, you clearly qualify as massive contributor to the audio portal. Please tell our readers, how you got into making music, what kind of genre you like the most.

SpaceWhale:

"Really, it was Newgrounds that made me want to make music. I visited the AP once and saw tons of underground musicians submitting their music, and I wanted to be like them. So, I looked up some DAWs to get and that's how I started making music. As of right now, I enjoy making progressive house music and 100bpm dubstep, but those are only the genres that I do the most. A lot of times I'll do others, like Drum n Bass, Chiptunes, and ambient music."

You recently released the free album Words In Motion, can we expect more free music from you in the future?

SpaceWhale:

"Definitely. I've realized that people tend to like music that's free over music that isn't, so I decided that I'd just make all of my future music free. I'll probably make the other albums free, too, but I'm still considering it."

SpaceWhale:

"statueofdiveo is a great underground artist who (in my opinion) seems in the same position I am: making good music but not quite noticed yet. I think that if we made a song together it'd be great, and we would both get noticed by each other's fans."

Interview with SpaceWhale

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

Dosensuppen:

"During the age of immaturity, preteen years, and fascination with blood and diving deep into the Internet, I was a Sonic fanboy. And, of course, as a blood thirsty, immature, Sonic fanboy, I looked for violent Sonic material. What did I come across on my dive into Google? Why, the Sonic collection, no less. Watched some animations, laughed, got a blood thrive, then explored a bit more of Newgrounds. Made an account, forgot the password, later made this account as Esshole, got the name change you see now. The reason I made an account was to make animations and share them. I was already making cartoons (badly) with Window Movie Maker and Paint."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Dosensuppen:

"I'm not gonna lie. Newgrounds has heavily, HEAVILY shaped who I am today. And I'm not ashamed of it. I felt I grew more mature, took some of the words of other users to heart, if it made sense, and lived by some of them -- not all mind you. If it wasn't for Newgrounds, I wouldn't have been making animations. I wouldn't know what Flash really even was. Hell, even got some of the humor I share in real life because of this place. So yes, it has changed me as a user, real life, and all around. For better or worse."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Dosensuppen:

"Krutches, number one. IceDragon64, Light, Kanon, Sanjeev98/Gimmick/Legnus or whatever the fuck he is now, Jolly (for the most part), Murray, Sevkat, Lintire, EDylan, Little-Rena (Regardless of his laziness), Manly-Chicken, mizzjuicyflava. Also that Asandir's a nice fellow."

VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Murray asks Dosensuppen:"So how do I affect Dosensuppen?"

"You know, I don't really know if I would say he affects me too much. I certainly have a viewing of him as a friendly, all well-rounded user. Jokingly, I could say he has my name in his sig, due to me helping to edit it, so he effects me by having my name stamped to each of his posts and therefor feeding my inner attention-whore. Seems like he gave enough of a damn about me to read the interview, so that's pretty neat.

Though, I didn't really answer how the users effect me, rather just answering who I like. So, Murray probably had a little interest in that unanswered section. I like Murray, he's a friendly user and moderator. I've even enjoyed a few of his flashes.

I guess, to answer the question, Murray effects me in a fairly small way. Giving me a friendly "face" to see on the BBS pretty regularly, that I am more than happy to see."

Dosensuppen:

"Enemies? Nah. I don't like a few of them. Sexual-Emo, Mia, a few stuck up crew members, Mia, Im-A-Pirate, and Mia. Also, Mia. But let's not forget Mia. He's the worst. On a side note, I'm always updating what I call, "The Shithead List", so if you wanna see guys I don't like, that's a place to go to. Guess who appears first on the list?"

You were formerly named Esshole. Did you ever regret your namechange to Narcissy and thought about going back to your classic username?

Dosensuppen:

"Plenty of times. Namely since there's a punk band named Narcissy, and newbies think I'm a female to start with. I sent a PM to Wade, but he didn't do anything. Besides, I got my recognition with this username. Esshole wasn't exactly my brightest moment."

* Changed his name to Dosensuppen on April 9th, 2013 *

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Dosensuppen:

"Moderators mostly do their job well. I won't lie, I feel that some BBS Mods ban some users unfairly, but it's a rarity, and in the end, it's none of my concern. I, too, felt as if once or twice I got banned unfairly, but big deal. It's just a forum and I learned from that mistake. But, overall, I feel the moderation team is good. I can't speak on behalf on the Audio or Art mods, because I don't deal with that part. However, I assume it's just as well."

January 2011 was the month that you became an icon moderator. Do you like this activity and would you like to be some other kind of moderator?

Dosensuppen:

"Actually, I became an Icon moderator on January 14, 2011 -- My 19th birthday. However, Icon Modding really is a noble deed (One I should really pick up on). I do enjoy doing it, but I really fall behind on it, mainly looking after my flash crew and doing more flashes. Personally, I would like to moderate the forums, or give it a go. I know it's not a glamorous job, and it's probably horrid with constant bitching and facepalming, but there's a lot of threads that I would've locked early on that get locked after about two pages. Plus I'm on at the slow times, and there's a lot of no-no threads made at that time."

You recently got your first award, the Daily Third for your flash entry "Death Star: The Nick Name". Can you tell our readers how you felt winning this trophy?

Dosensuppen:

"I spent the whole day watching over the portal when I saw my flash was one of the highest scoring flashes that day. And I knew it was a slow day. So, when I first got it, I felt pissed off since it hit the time for the awards to be picked and my flash wasn't there. I hopped over to the daily, he got it, I hopped over to a few others and they got it. No third in sight, saw mine and just gave a "Yes!" I felt pretty good about it. Finally thought, "I'm finally worth a damn." But I got a long, long way to go before I can even hope to get front paged. Maybe I just got lucky."

Dosensuppen:

"Soup Squad is a flash group started by Little-Rena. It attracted a few newbs and became quickly inactive, with only two flashes released, done not-so-great, under the Soup Squad name. Recently, it has picked back up.

Basically, I'm second in command of the whole group. I actually run it. The leader basically agrees with me. I brought the crew out of an early grave and made it my own. I'm more or so often looked at as the real leader and top contributor. Still, there are some way better flash artists in there. I handle all the politics."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

Gimmick:

"I found Newgrounds around the same day I joined, on 20th August 2008. I didn't really find newgrounds per se; it was rather my brother who joined it. He found it after we fiddled a bit with Flash, and I decided to learn flash soon after and then I began to submit flash soon after. I asked him if he could join, and he reluctantly accepted, but not for long. He quit flash, and moved on to another hobby, and he's inactive on Newgrounds -- which is why I use that as an alt account."

Gimmick:

"To tell you the truth, I hate anyone who hates me back, and it's just a vicious cycle. Thankfully, it's rare, and not many people actually hate me, except for maybe this guy, and he went to the extent of leaving reviews with a low rating not for the content of what he reviewed, but rather just to spite me.

Apart from that I don't not like many users. Except for maybe myself, a little bit."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Gimmick:

"Certainly. It has been a life-changing experience on NG for me, and not necessarily in a bad way -- I used the BBS for some time in 2008, but looking back now, I was alarmed, seeing how horrible a user I was back then -- you could have said I was a typical stupid noob on the internet. I was pretty hard-hit by what other users' remarks were and what I thought of myself, and I focused on improving myself, hence the 2 year hiatus from the BBS.

Not only was it that, my english has vastly improved thanks to the Writing forum and the frequent posting on General, which, over time, improved it as well."

You surely have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Gimmick:

"Well! I don't really remember which opinion I had about them, but I'll try to answer this question even if I didn't.

The mods are doing a good job, and I feel that they're one of the best I've seen on any site I visited previously. They ban users who don't follow the rules, and their bans aren't too harsh; it just depends on the offense. Of course, my reaction to me being review banned in 2008 near christmas was rather the exact opposite."

Newgrounds has good aspects, but also bad ones. Could you tell our readers one thing that you dislike about Newgrounds and another that you like the most?

Gimmick:

"I can't really think of any negative points, seeing as the redesign would correct the ones I have, and neither can I think of any point I like the most; I like all of them equally. Except for maybe the forums, which I regularly turn to when I'm bored."

You had 2 Username changes. Firstly you were Sanjeev98, then Gimmick and now your are known as Legnus. Can you tell us the background story for those three names? And are you happy with your current username?

Gimmick:

"Sanjeev98, at the time, was my "master username" -- I used that same username on every site I joined. The thing is, I first got that username when my father signed me up for a website, and told me the username. Since I didn't know what the Internet was (I was around 6 at the time) I thought I could use only that username, and I've since stood corrected.

Since I found out I could use other usernames, but I couldn't change the one on this site, I stuck with it for around 2 and a half years, and during the latter part, I found out I could change my username (thanks to the forums), and I decided to give it a shot.

I thought Gimmick was a good username, which I was thinking about one day in school, when the teacher was going through with the other students, and I just sat there, staring at the wall, and trying to think up a good username and after a while, I came up with Gimmick.

Of course, I decided to switch over to Legnus because I was i) getting a bit tired of the jokes associated with my username and ii) Legnus is an obscure video game reference. Searching for it returns no relevant results; but just as a hint it's got nothing to do with WoW. I don't even know what WoW is."

You are a member of Newgrounds since 2008. Can you tell our readers how Newgrounds changed in your opinion over the time? And do you enjoy Newgrounds more nowadays or do you think that it was better in the past?

Gimmick:

"I joined late 2008, but here's something: I didn't log on a lot, I just signed up and submitted flash occasionally, but while I just frequented the site for the sole purpose of submitting flash, I did visit the forums back then, and I also witnessed the creation of the art and audio portal. It's definitely better now, seeing as there's a lot of content and entertainment to be received from the forums, the art portal and the audio portal."

You were, sadly, one of the users who got affected by the Canas incident. You got review banned and some of your reviews got unrightfully deleted. How do you think about it?

Gimmick:

"I'm indifferent on this issue. The review bans were all lifted and I duly re-reviewed the flash, thanks to the PM I received from M-Bot."

You have 34 flash submissions. Would you consider yourself a flash artist and is there a work that you are most proud of?

Gimmick:

"If by "flash artist" you mean something like a professional, hell no -- I'm nowhere near that level. The thing I'm most proud of, however, was Chalkboard Pong; I'm proud not of the scores, but of the effort I put into the flash and the reception I got from people."

Gimmick:

"Maybe some more BBS posts, flash, that kind of stuff?"
