Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user JRob.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username JRob?

JRob:

"Both the games and the audio is what brought me here. I got into playing flash games back in my late elementary/early middle school years (around 5th grade and 6th grade in 2006). I jumped around from flash hosting site to flash hosting site, but eventually ended up spending most of that time on OneMoreLevel. They had a lot of flash games from sites like Armor Games, Kongregate, etc., but the one site that most of my favorite ones came from (Dragon Boy, Feudalism, Feudalism 2, Age of War, Arcane, etc.) was this site. That, however, wasn't enough alone to bring me here and keep me here since I didn't know yet that the majority of the music (stuff like Waterflame's Glorious Morning and tons of ParagonX9's music) used in the games came from the Audio Portal, much less even noticed there was one.

A while after I started listening to a lot of Kid2Will and ParagonX9, I eventually came here to download their music. The idea of putting my music on this site interested me, but there wasn't any music I had that I felt was worthy of posting (I didn't have anything that could render songs to .mp3, much less .wav, at the time either as this was before I got FL Studio or even MusicStudio for iOS). I came here frequently to listen to stuff in the Audio Portal, but I didn't really play any of the games or watch the movies...or look at the art or lurk the forums. I finally signed up for an account here about a month before I got FL Studio (my first submission was done in it, obviously).

About my username, J'Rob is actually one of my nicknames IRL. Back in the 8th grade, one of my friends basically combined the first letter of my first name and part of my last name. I know it's pretty dumb, but it just sounded right and it stuck (even until now). It didn't have a written form, so I gave it one and use it as my username for multiple things. I started out here as "theJRob" since it wouldn't let me use just "JRob." I didn't know if it was taken or not (this was before I knew you could simply just replace the "www" with the username in the URL) so I asked Wade to check and give me the name if it wasn't an active account, hence that is now my username (and I don't plan on getting a username change)."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

JRob:

"Well of course I've changed (quite a bit) within the time I've had this account - I went through the end of my junior year and entire senior year of high school and just now finished my first semester of college, which is pretty much a major point in anyone's life.

Over the past year, I've developed my own posting style and attitude on the forums. I probably come off as more abrasive more often than I did when I first started posting here; I didn't start out as the "I'm new" thread, "im new dont be mean 2 me" type of poster, but I did have a pretty shitty posting style. One thing that hasn't changed is that I try to maintain as close to perfect grammar and spelling as possible, even when I fist started out.

In real life, I've started to care a bit less what other people think about me (not too much though, since I like to keep an image). Having started college about half a year ago, I've adopted the attitude of "there's 20,000+ students here and I don't have the time to care what they all think of me." I've also become significantly less introverted - we had to do personality tests for engineering to determine group roles and such and I scored right in the middle on the introvert/extrovert scale; before I probably would have leaned more towards the introvert side."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

JRob:

"I definitely have a lot of respect for some of the users in the Audio Portal.

Dan Johansen has a lot of great music in not only Metal, but shows skill in crafting great cinematic pieces; he's got amazing guitar-playing skill and killer vocals too.

After listening to a lot of heavy electronic music such as Tiga by Quentin Grey, Cradle of Filth's Dance Macabre and the remix of From the Cradle to Enslave, I needed more heavy, kickass Industrial Electronic music and LichLordMusic's Leviathan Networks immediately had me hooked. I've supported him by buying his first album on bandcamp and he's also currently doing vocals and production on an Industrial piece I did and wrote lyrics for. I definitely would recommend listening to his music since he has a lot of kickass stuff.

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

JRob:

"I've had my fair share of arguments with some of the more stubborn users like Sekhem and Based (I'm starting to think that Based might be trolling about 50% of the time), but no one really annoys me as much as the anonymous zerobombing shitheads - the ones that zerobomb stuff without a perfectly good and justifiable reason; I'd like to know who the zerobombers are and watch them have their cable shut off."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

JRob:

"I started out posting in Politics, but it just felt...slow; I may have posted some in Audio too back then, but same problem with Politics. General just seemed like the forum I wanted to be part of. The hilarity and drama in the General Forum is what keeps me there. As for users to interview, I think an interview with supergandhi64 would make for a fun read. I'd also recommend LichLordMusic for another audio artist interview."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

JRob:

"The moderators are okay...well at least the ones who are actually active; it kind of bugs me to see a mod who is almost never active on here come on and lock a decent thread and just leave. I'd say the best forum mods would be stafffighter, ZJ, Zachary, Purgy, and sometimes Timmy. I think poxpower can be pretty funny at times, but can be douchy at others, especially in the Politics forum."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

JRob:

"I wasn't very active here before the redesign, so I barely remembered exactly what the site looked like; I had to go back through the archives to refresh my memory. It certainly looks a lot better now (cleaner too), in my opinion. I kind of want some of the old features from before the recent redesign Audio Portal such as author search and top five of the week (and I'm pretty sure there was an autoplay feature where one of the top five would play while on the main page of the portal)."

Judging from your usericon, you seem to like South Park. Tell me what you like about the show and talk about your favourite episodes.

JRob:

"Like? It's one of my favorite shows, next to the Nickelodeon Avatar series; I've seen almost every episode (I need to watch the episodes that I've missed from the last two seasons). Despite it not being my absolute favorite show, it has my absolute favorite character of any series, animated or live action (...actually I don't really like many live action TV series) - Kenny McCormick.I tried to think of what my favorite episode was, but I couldn't think of a single episode as my definite favorite (there's way too many good episodes). I really liked the edginess of the earlier seasons, though; the newer seasons are still really good, but the older seasons just had that...edge to them.

A list of my favorite episodes:

Cartman Gets an Anal Probe (the first episode)

Pip

Towlie

The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers

The Death Camp of Tolerance

Good Times With Weapons

AWESOM-O

Goobacks

Douche and Turd

Woodland Critter Christmas

Die Hippie, Die ("hippies can't stand death metal")

Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow

Trapped in the Closet

Smug Alert

Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy

The Imaginationland trilogy

Major Boobage

The Ring

The Coon series

Butters' Bottom Bitch

The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs

I see a fancy Final Fantasy VII icon on your desktop. Which Final fantasy title is your favourite and why? Which battles/moments impressed you the most in the series?

JRob:

"(Spoiler alert)

I actually haven't played it yet...I got it off Steam just because it was on there and I'm somewhat of a fan of the series. I've only played the earlier games in the series (1-6). Despite the fact that I preferred the purely turn-based games of the series (not too big of a fan of the ATB system), Final Fantasy IV is by far my definite favorite mostly because there was just something about the way the game progressed that complemented the story and vice versa (and not to mention it had the best soundtrack of the old-school games in the series). I really liked the mood of the final battle in IV; I remember the first time I fought Zeromus - I buffed up as much as I could before starting the actual fight, only to get slapped with a Black Hole. However, I kind of hated the attack Big Bang; I didn't hate it for being a bit OP - the final boss is supposed to be a major threat. The reason I didn't like it was because he had a small movepool. Black Hole made things a little bit more interesting by removing all the buffs and debuffs you set, but other than that, the only thing you had to watch out for was the random counter to magic attacks with a Flare or Osmose; since I primarily used magic for buffing and healing and using physical attacks, all he did was shake, Black Hole, shake, Big Bang, shake, Black Hole, shake, Big Bang.

I came kind of late in starting the series as my first game from the series was Tactics Advance. One of my cousins forgot the game at my house and he lives about a two and a half hour drive away, so it was a while before we could get the game back to him without mailing it (an extra bit of trivia, this is the same cousin that gave me his Pokemon Red cartridge that got me into that series as well). So, in that amount of time, I played some of the game and it really grew on me; my parents got me my own copy of the game for my next birthday. My next SquareEnix game after that was Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Eventually I got around to playing the first Final Fantasy (and a couple other Square games) and have played up to VI thus far."

You are an audio artist. When did you start making music? Do you plan to release more music on Newgrounds in the near future?

JRob:

"I've been a music person for almost my entire life; my parents got me a keyboard when I was like four or five since I'd always try to play the ones they had on display in stores. My parents weren't making too much money when I was younger (they've worked their asses off to get up to the upper middle class over the last decade and a half) so paying for me to take lessons wasn't really an option until later, but I had started to memorize a couple beginner level songs (it was one of those keyboards that has playback) until I started taking lessons. In the middle of my 4th grade year was when I started taking piano lessons; around that time, I started writing short melodies and such. I picked up playing the violin for the school string orchestra, which was first available to us in my first year of middle school (6th grade); the music theory which I picked up from piano lessons gave me an edge over the other students so much that I felt that the class was holding me back. Both having a background in piano and string orchestra helped for when I first tried my hand at using computer software to make music.

I started out with a program called Music MasterWorks XE, a MIDI-based software. My first compositions weren't really that great (at all), but they were more experiments with certain aspects in music composition such as chord structures and modulation, layering, melodies, etc. There are a couple good melodies and such which I would like to go back and try to reuse, and there are a couple songs which I want to update now that I have FL Studio (I've done just that with a couple of my thematic VGM); eventually I'll get around to doing it. I had a bit of a progressive period during this time and I really want to revamp some of the more intricate pieces I did back then. In 2011, I downloaded an app for iOS called MusicStudio; it plenty of limitations just like Music MasterWorks, but it definitely sounded better than MIDI. I finally got the FL Studio Signature Bundle in late 2011 and I really like using it. I plan to update a lot of my older stuff in the future."

I know that you have a 100 years old violin. What other instruments do you have and which ones can you play?

JRob:

"Over 200 years old, actually; but yes, it's pretty old. The strings, coarse tuning pegs, the fine tuner, and all that other good stuff is new but the body and fingerboard are genuine 200 year old German craftsmanship. I started out renting a mock Stradivarius during my middle school years to play in the school string orchestra; it didn't sound nearly as great (like I said, it was based on the Stradivarius and was built a relatively short time ago), but in comparison to what the majority of what the other students were using (French made string instruments...ugh), it was of fairly high quality.

I think I've stated this multiple times on the forum boards, and in my response to the previous question, but I also play piano. I have an upright piano (my parents bought it soon after I started taking lessons) and a keyboard (it's pretty shitty since we've had it at my house since about 1998).

Other than that, I don't own any other instruments (I have a recorder, but pretty much anyone who has gone through the American public education system has owned and played one). My brother has a trumpet and my dad has a trombone and those are the only other instruments in our house, but I lack the ability to play either."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

JRob:

"It's not really a secret to you guys here on NG, but anime and manga (and everything else weeaboo) are part of a massive (massive) guilty pleasure of mine; I barely talk to anyone about it in real life, and even when I have, not very much at all. I feel like people view liking certain aspects (well, most - excluding stuff like the Final Fantasy or Pokemon franchises that practically everyone knows about) of Japanese culture as strange or weird - I could talk you to death about my favorite metal bands from Norway, Sweden, or any other European country, but when it comes to bands from Japan such as Yousei Teikoku, I avoid talking about it too much. Since I don't personally know anyone on this site, nor do any of the people I know in real life (not counting the select few who actually have been on here a bit and coincidentally also watch anime) use this site, I have no problem talking about stuff like this freely. If you were to meet me in real life without knowing any of this, you would never guess that I'm a tidbit weeaboo-ish."

What can we expect from you in the future, JRob?

JRob:

"I'd like to do more collaborations. The Audio Portal has quite a lot of untapped talent that needs recognition. I'd personally like to see, and even participate in, a collaboration with artists from different genres to make something new and different or a fusion of the genres (like metal and electronic).

One thing I really would like to see is a group of Newgrounders come together to make a large game; we have audio artists, programmers, voice actors, artists (and 3D artists), and the like and we haven't utilized that talent for any major projects yet? It could bring a lot of traffic back here too if it becomes fairly popular. I'd certainly like to be part of that project, too.

As for my solo work, expect to see some vocal work and improved versions of my earlier stuff. Also I hope I will be able to finish this album I've been working on since I got FL Studio."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Nebula.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username vampirefan2 and why did you change it to Lady-Stardust and later to Nebula?

Nebula:

"Well obviously, vampirefan2 was just a terrible username, so to reflect my interest in glam rock at the time I changed it to Lady-Stardust then I changed it to Nebula cause I got tired of people pestering me about changing it back. Also just because Nebula is just easier to type (yeah I'm lazy I guess). Still not changing back though. Besides, I really couldn't stand being called "LSD".

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Nebula:

"A little bit I suppose but not really. I still like glam rock and I'm still gothy. However I have become very distrusting and a bit of an introvert. In fact I barely talk to my neighbors, not that I hate them but they don't talk to me much either anyway. I'm not very social is what I'm saying here especially when I left school. Not to mention a lot of my friends left with no way to contact them at all. Back to my trust issues. I've been getting backstabbed a LOT this year, Thanks completely to my brother. I digress though, I won't drama dump anymore here."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Nebula:

"NuScarab for one, it was heart-breaking to see him hurt himself with his alcohol years ago, he became better obviously and I do need to talk about films with someone. He does the trick for me in that department. Gagsy is just fun especially since we love the same shows more or less (Hannibal, Supernatural, and Sherlock). Floff is a lot of fun too, I think we could be "BBF's" in real life if we ever met."

Nebula:

"I reallly can't stand users like Landon, S0V, and Unowned. They're pretentious, stuck-up, children. You know the types, they complain about the government and such and such. When honestly, they always come across as upper class suburb kids. This kid is banned luckily but CreepyJ was just... Unsettling when he was around. Really, with users like that I'm not surprised we had some good ones leave."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

Nebula:

"I tend to just go with general most of the time (even if some of threads are.... Questionable to say the least) but the video game forum is fun at least. Being a gamer myself (dumb term but there you go). I tend to avoid the politcs forum though, it's largely a cesspool of flame wars. Like many politcal forums (hence why some forums don't have them). I dunno."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Nebula:

"The mods are fine by me honestly. Though Gory can be kind of tiresome with his lectures on erm.. Certain topics which I won't get into here. Rad is problably the best mod right now even if he only mods the chat."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Nebula:

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign?

Nebula:

"Can't remember much but I would watch a lot of flash cartoons. Two of which made me fans of a couple of bands (Mew and Theodor Bastard BTW). I did post even if the posts were absolutely terrible, although to be fair to myself, I was 14. I wish I could remember the site back in 2007. I don't think I was on it much though back then."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Nebula:

"It's okay I guess. I love that the site isn't super bright with tiny text and doesn't have the ever-annoying infite scroll like a lot of modern websites. I miss the userpage banners though, but oh well, we at least have our sigs in PNG. Another plus is the chat, even if some of the users who went on it were really bothersome."

You are a frequent visitor of the Newgrounds Featureless Chat. What do you like about the chat and what is not good about it?

Nebula:

"Users like Rad, Jay, Gagsy, tigerkitty, and others. Like I said though, some users made it a terrible experience sometimes. Luckily 4 of those questionable users are long gone. I won't go into much detail about them here but needless to say, good riddance."

It seems like you are a fan of the tv series Doctor Who. Tell my readers what the series is about and why you like it. Which of the Doctor's incarnations do you like the most and which actor would you like to see playing the Doctor in the future?

Nebula:

"Ohhh boy, this might contain some nerd-gushing. Well it's about a time travelling alien from a planet called Gallifrey. I like a lot of the stories. They're more or less fairy tales. I like the universe and how it allows for a lot of possible adventures and creativity. My first incarnation of him was the 9th doctor. So he was my favorite version. I guess Daniel Radcliffe could work if they're ever going with a younger doctor again."

You are a huge fan of movies in general. What was your favorite movie of 2013? Likewise, which film of 2013 did you find the most horrible?

Nebula:

"The World's End, although Pacific Rim came very close. Spring Breakers was an absolutely terrible movie with Only God Forgives coming in second. Seriously, don't get me started on Spring Breakers. Especially since I ranted about that movie to death. Yeah just look at my review on my Letterboxd (shameless plug I know and yes the site's name is spelled like that)."

Einstürzende Neubauten is one of your favourite bands. What are your favourite songs? Did you ever visit one of their concerts? If so, talk about this experience.

Nebula:

"Yee, well I like "The Garden", "Halber Mensch" and "Stella Maris" a lot. I wish I could say I went to one of their concerts but I haven't sadly (yet). So I'll just say other things here. I love that Blixa joined up with Nick Cave for The Bad Seeds which is yet another one of my favorite bands. Nick and Blixa were just amazing together."

You have played atleast some of the Silent Hill games. Which one is your favourite and which scene(s) did you like the most? What is your opinion about the adaptions?

Nebula:

"Silent Hill 2 and I like the scenes with Angela, also the reveal scene which I won't spoil here. Bleh. The first movie was okay I guess, wish they didn't gender swap Harry but oh well. The 2nd movie really suffers for me however. Changing Vincent really killed it for me and what they did to Doug, Memory of Alessa, Pyramid Head, and Claudia also. Just an all around terrible sequel."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Nebula:

"*Drama dump alert* Well, I have trust issues which can contradict with my need for friends but really, considering the stuff that happened in the past it'd be easy to see why. I'm just scared of being hurt I guess. I'll avoid being redundant here."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, Nebula?

Nebula:

"More art I guess. Might try to do some music also since I got a guitar and keyboard now. Dunno if I'll ever do flash animations but we'll see. I am thinking of doing movies of a sort."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Twone.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username Twone?

Twone:

"I found Newgrounds around 2003, when I was just a 12 years old baby. I joined because I wanted to vote, blam/protect stuff, and review stuff. I joined at the beginning of 2005, later on. I didn't find the forums until a few months later. Twone was a nickname that my older brother's friend called me, since I have a twin. It went from "Twin One" and "Twin Two" to "Twone" and "Twwo." The nicknames didn't stick personally, but I thought it'd be fitting."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Twone:

"Absolutely! I was 13 when I joined, and now am 22. I went from middle school to my current career while on NG. Haven't been on as much over the last few years, but I've been popping in every few months."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Twone:

"Best buddy Tom! Really, the people I was "friends" with were people from another forum called The Revird came from: SlipperyMooseCakesSensationalismEckeYodd, and some other great guize. Other friends were from the Sonic Crew (back when I was REALLY into Sonic games), and most of them aren't active anymore. Gotta give a shoutout to Metaljonus too, since he was my favorite audio portal artist, and I've talked to him a few times. I don't talk to people from Newgrounds much anymore. But that could change!"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

Twone:

"Nope! :)"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

Twone:

"They're dumb and I love them. Lately I've been perusing the Collaboration forum to get some side work. I used to frequent General and Clubs & Crews waaay more often than I do now."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Twone:

"I haven't been banned in a really long time, so... yes they're great! :P"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Twone:

"If I were anything, I'd be an audio portal moderator. I really don't have enough time to be active around here during the day, so I can't imagine I'd be a very reliable moderator."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign.

Twone:

"Couldn't even tell you, it feels like it's been so long. I remember liking the extra levels and the newer, sleeker design."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Twone:

"I think it looks pretty nice. I dig the classic portal option, since that's what I was so used to seeing. I wasn't active when they did the redesign, so it took some time for me to get used to it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Vince, the blue Betta fish, was the first pet that you had, at the age of 17. Looking back, would you have liked to get pets earlier? What was/were your dream pet(s) and what pets do you currently have?

Twone:

"Holy shit, you did your research! Vince was the only pet I ever had. My girlfriend at the time got him for me, since I never had any pets and she had a few. Looking back, I would have liked a dog. Maybe when I'm older and married I'll get a dog."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You are an audio artist. When did you start making music? Will you release more music on Newgrounds in the future? If you could work together with another Newgrounds audio artist, who would it be?

Twone:

"Well, I started "making" music when I was 8 years old. My mom forced me into piano lessons, but I ended up liking them, so I stuck with it. I started recording music when I was a senior in high school; my dad bought me a Zoom mixer/recorder when I started looking into schools for audio engineering. Just recorded whatever came to mind. Some stuff was released, most wasn't."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You plan to form a metal band. What kind of metal music do you want to make and which metal artists inspire your own work?

Twone:

"There's so much good metal out there, I can't even decide what kind of band I want to be in. But the two ideas I had were like an atmospheric death metal sound, and one reminiscent of bands like Iron Maiden, composed in the style of old games like Castlevania. I think either of those would be be pretty cool, if I can make them work. Some bands I like now are Meshuggah, Fallujah, Blotted Science, Chimp Spanner, Animals as Leaders, Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless, Nile, and High on Fire. As I write this, I'm listening to the new Gorguts album, as suggested by my co-worker, and I really dig it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening is one of your favourite games. Tell my readers why you like this game and what makes it stand out from the other Zelda titles. Also, could you imagine remaking some of the songs of this game in the future?

Twone:

"When I was younger, I was floored by Ocarina of Time (which is not my favorite Zelda now, but that was the first one I played), and had a serious Zelda fever. Music in Zelda games is a huge thing, and it's what made me want to pursue music in games. What makes Link's Awakening stand out for me is partly the music, since it's really intricate and beautiful for such a tiny medium. I also really liked the sense of adventure it gave you. There are some really serious moments of the game; sometimes you feel super powerful, and then there's moments like when you're in the dream and you feel utterly helpless."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

It's just a guess but I think you might be a fan of the Sonic franchise. What was the first Sonic game that you played? Which is your favourite Sonic game and which game(s) didn't live up to your expectations?

Twone:

"The first Sonic game was the first video game I've ever owned! I played it like nuts. I think Sonic 3 is my favorite, since it was such an upgrade from the previous games. Sonic 2 is the most popular among fans, but I think the third was better. I got Sonic '06 as a gift, and I was hoping it would be *okay.* That game was a NIGHTMARE, I can't believe it was even released."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Twone:

"I mostly have music from playing piano and guitar, but I play the clarinet and bass clarinet! It's pretty much what got me into music school. Haven't picked it up in a few months, though."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, Twone?

Twone:

"More music! Hopefully getting some compositions in some movies and games."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Wegra.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username wegra2007 and why did you change it to Wegra?

Wegra:

"I found Newgrounds from an old friend of mine when I was like maybe 10-11 years old was still into neopets at the time. Then another one of my firends was on it and I ended up using his account. He wasn't really that active so I adopted his account Wegra2 in 2006 I got locked out because my friend got a lot of spam and he changed his email adress. So I changed it to wegra2006 then wegra2007 then just Wegra because it would be redundant. I joined because it had a lot going on and I liked contributing to a site which encourages voting and reviewing. Not to mention statwhoring. Oh and FYI according to my friend Wegra is a combo between the words Wegmans a supermarket on the east coast and...Something else."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Wegra:

"Oh totally, Sure I may be sort of the same but I felt as the years went by I was more mature then most kids my age. Like I felt like I was associating myself with a more different kind of crowd for better or for worse. And I like it like that :)"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?'

Wegra:

"Eh I like just about everyone. I mean there's so many I can barely keep track. Buttttt off the top of my head... LiarDee, Luke, Thor, Mia, CrazyRock, kisame, ZJ, TomFulp, EyeLovePoozy, JadeTheAssassin, Carrion, Pikarobo, Wavechan, Cam3leon, tarahloveshentai, Stamper,Josh Bedn, Schizo-Sephy, HappyHarry, floff, and loads other. As for how they affect me well they just are great people to talk to and helped me out a few times. Couldn't ask for better people and friends in life."

Wegra:

"Well yeah unfortunately some of them just follow me and give me shit. Looking at you Slint and Selena."

Wegra:

"There's just no place like it. I get fast responses. Not always the ones I'm looking for but they do keep me entertained. As for suggestions ummmmm....Hmmm I wonder if Pikarobo is up for one of them."

Wegra:

"I feel like they do their job better then other sites at least from what I hear."

Wegra:

"Yes yes and double yes. Any mod will do. But of course a fourm mod would be awesome."

Wegra:

"Well there was a MASSIVE amount of handy features from the news posts which helps determine if users are still active to more smileys and an easier voting system."

Wegra:

"Well it's got its ups and downs. I do like the favorites system and the notifications are extra handy plus the collabirator buut I feel the designs a bit how to say...Overdone. Like, I think it should be simple but different. Kinda like a mix between 2007-2012s design and 2004."

You post a lot on Twitter and Newgrounds. How important is social media to you? What do you think about the newest Newgrounds newspost features?

Wegra:

"I'm more active on Facebook actually but social media is more important then we give it credit for. When you post Newgrounds movies on Facebook there's a high chance of giving it extra views so I encourage it. Plus its fun just to fuck with your friends on it ;)"

You are the creator of the critically acclaimed flash series The Dot of Exellence. Tell my readers what this series is about and if you will continue the series in the near future.

Wegra:

"Critically Acclaimed? Wow that's flattering. Its basically just a black dot in various themes like one episode they go to the beach one can be hanging out with villans or dressing up rocking out etc. As for continuing it uh hopefully If I can get episode 45 passed despite it being blammed."

There is documented proof of you visiting the last Comic Con. Talk about this experience.

Wegra:

"Oh wow where to begin. There was SO much to see and do. I got to meet a lot of cool people semi celebrities, check out a few upcoming game got myself a Mega Man hat, Hell I even met a few Newgrounders here and there. With that said if you've never been to a convention like Comic Con or whatever do make the time and money to do so. It's a place where you can truely be yourself."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user DM692.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username DM692?

DM692:

"I first found Newgrounds just a couple weeks before I signed up, if I'm not mistaken. When I did so, it was to use the review section which I more or less though was analogous to a comment system (which is an illusion I've really grown to hate, haha). I just stayed on here to play games for a while, and then in 2007-2010 I really got active on the forums. After I discovered them, that really solidified my notions of sticking around.

As for my username, it's a story of childhood silliness I've had to explain a couple times in chat. Shortly after I was introduced to the internet (really just a year or so before joining Newgrounds), my friends were playing this cool multiplayer game where you run around and chop logs and raise your skills and shit (RUNESCAPE!), so I decided to sign up. To the chagrin of my wee, undeveloped brain, DarkMaster was taken, and not having that name would make it so no one would know how edgy and badass I was. So, I went with the game-recommended name of DarkMast692. I used that moniker for several services, and it eventually just got shortened to what it is today.

Or you can just assume I killed the other 691 dungeon masters."

DM692:

"Absolutely! When I joined, I was that generic, bratty 12 year old that thought he was king shit. Seriously, looking back at my first ~10-15 pages of posts, it's just embarrassing. In all honesty, I think Newgrounds may have changed my personality in a profoundly positive way. When I was young(er) and stupid, I'd post some dumb shit, I'd catch flak, and I'd learn not to do it again. Newgrounds has always been an interesting cross-section of society with all sorts of people and backgrounds in it, so one could argue that as a young child I got to interact with a hell of a lot more kinds of people than your average 12 year old. I honestly believe that just being here, talking to people, seeing what other people say, all the shit you do on a forum, will affect anyone positively if they do it with the right mindset."

DM692:

"supergandhi64- I'm not lying or exaggerating when I say this guy could very well be favorite user on the site. When he's posting, he's usually either trolling or pointing out people's stupidities/hypocrisies to them, and it's almost always entertaining.

Viper- He just seems like a friendly, level headed guy. He's not too loud, he's not too cocky, he doesn't stick his nose where it doesn't belong and get mixed up in pissing matches. If I would have actually gotten around to it, I definitely would have nominated him for Most Underrated in the forum awards.

Sense-Offender- Intelligent, and unlike too many of this site's intelligent posters, not a drama queen. I honestly think the community could improve a great deal if some of the more inflammatory people took a note from Sense-Offender's posting style."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

DM692:

"I like to think I don't have any enemies on here. As for users I don't like, I don't really want to say in particular, but in general it's the ones that seriously try to impose their beliefs on others without being open to having their own beliefs changed. The bottom line is that I don't care how stupid/smart you are, as long as you're willing to learn."

DM692:

"My opinion on the forums? There's far too many ways I feel about them to explain, but I've spent 6 years here, so at the least I'll say they're doing something right. As for preferring a particular sub-forum, I'd have to say General is my favorite. A lot of people like complaining about it and saying it's a cesspool of stupidity, but that's ignoring the fact that that's pretty much where we get a vast majority of our traffic, good or bad. Unfortunately, I can't really think of anyone I'd like to see interviewed that you haven't done already."

DM692:

"They keep the place running smoothly. Any spam accounts are usually swiftly dealt with, as are necroposters and general rulebreakers. There was a time where I probably would have said I was unhappy with the forum moderation team (everywhere else has been pretty consistently good), but I think the group of people we have doing the job right now is very good."

DM692:

"I'd love to be a forum/chat mod. I do spend quite a bit of time on here but don't feel as if I contribute enough. These are the two areas I'm by far the most active in, and sort of know the little behavioral quirks of. I've been told I have a good head for authority, so I feel that would help too."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

DM692:

"I've always found I have a fairly progressive attitude towards change, so I welcomed the redesign and didn't pass judgement until I got used to it again. For the most part, I really do love the new design and all the new features (the social feed being one of the best features to grace this website, imo), but I understand where people are coming from with the usual "it's too difficult to navigate" and "bring back userpage headers". The bottom line is that I think the new design opened up a lot of possibilities for the site, while improving the experience for people who already know their way around. I'm more interested in seeing whether the staff has plans to further improve/change the site than I am in saying I "like" or "dislike" it, though."

It seems like you play League of Legends. When did you start playing and what do you like about it? What characters do you play the most?

DM692:

"I started playing this game around a year or two ago. Say what you will about it, but League of Legends has made a pretty sizable dent on a global scale. Obviously to stick around and play it I must like the gameplay, but my favorite part about it is the sheer amount of strategization innately present in MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games. You can sit around for hours figuring out a way to play without ever opening the game, which is an aspect I adore.

As for the characters (referred to as "champions", if you're unfamiliar with the game) I play, my two favorite right now would probably be Akali and Trundle.

Akali is an assassin that fares extremely well on her own, while also arguably being one of the best champions for destroying a single target quickly. This leads her to be a great tactical force while retaining effectiveness in a teamfight scenario.

Trundle is generally a tank, and one that decides when the fights happen for both sides. Again, this brings him to a position of incredible tactical prowess, and that's by far my favorite trait of any champion."

In 2009, your favourite movie of all time was The Last Samurai, Tell my readers what you like about this movie. What other movies that have been released since then do you like?

DM692:

"Holy shit I actually remember typing that X0

That was written before I had much experience with film at all, so I wouldn't put much stock in it. What I do remember is that they captured the feel of historical Japan in a way that's easy to interpret and vicariously enjoy. It had some good battle scenes in addition to decent character development. I'd recommend this film to anyone interested in historical Japan as well as anyone looking for an action movie that's just pretty good in general.

As for movies I like that have came out since then, I have to admit I don't see very many. However, one that did stick out for me was Limitless (despite the gaping plot hole of STOP GIVING THE FUCKING RUSSIAN GUY PILLS WTF). I like the concept of a pill that makes your brain work at full capacity, and they represented it fairly well in this movie."

You play a good variety of instruments, including guitars and drums. What was the first instrument that you learned to play? What is the most difficult song that you can play on the guitar?

DM692:

"The first of my instruments I learned how to play would be the guitar. I got my first acoustic one when I was around 7 or 8, but didn't start playing seriously until I was around 12 or 13, when I got my first electric guitar. It's funny that now I spend a lot more time practicing my acoustic playing than my electric. As for the most difficult song I can play, I'll admit that I spend very little time learning full complex songs, and more time learning the mechanics that make them up. That being said, the most difficult song I can play through would probably be Bullet for my Valentine- Waking the Demon, which isn't actually that hard but damn the main riff is cool.

Additionally, I can play and sing a couple songs on my acoustic. I've been considering putting a cover of Emilie Autumn-One Foot in Front of the Other up, but I think I want to wait until I really get that song down."

Judging from your most played songs on Itunes, you seem to be a fan of the Metal genre. What are your favourite Metal bands and songs? Which Metal subgenres do you like the most?

Lamb of God I think

DM692:

"Good call, Lamb of God is definitely my favorite band of my favorite subgenre, but I'd be hard-pressed to call them my favorite band overall, my musical taste covers too many genres to have a favorite band. However, when it comes to Metal, Groove Metal is by far my favorite. It encompasses my 3 favorite aspects of Metal well, and those would be heaviness, technical ability, and a beat one can really mosh to. This is a genre that catches a lot of flak from hardcore metal fans for not being "real metal", but that's just morons who don't know what they're talking about.

Lamb of God- Terminally UniqueChimaira- Trigger FingerDevildriver- I Dreamed I Died"

DM692:

BK looks like a rotty/pitbull, Levi is a Border Collie/Black Lab, and Trigger looks like a bulkier white version of BK with black spots."

DM692:

"More of the same old shit, just gonna stick around and keep posting until I finally get sick of it. I'm also looking forward to possibly releasing some music on here at some point in the future, but I have to wait and see if I ever actually get around to getting all that shit done."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Splats.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username Splats?

Splats:

Tricky one! I've been around for a while as an 8 year-old (?) boy, no account, nothing. Just lurking around for the silly games, actually. I preferred outlandish flashes like the classic Skullkid and African Detroit Cop to the countless half-decent flash sites out there, and in 2010 I figured I'd make an account, which I did. From then on, I went by the name of - don't laugh - PixelDude12345. Those were the days. Earlier this year (January? February?) I got bored and posted some stuff in the BBS, not thinking I'd get so involved. However, seeing as I'd be making contact with people, I figured I'd better change my username to something less ridiculous, and Splats (after an unused enemy in Sonic the Hedgehog 2) was quirky enough to accurately represent who I am. Or something. Now I've been around for nearly a year, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Splats:

I absolutely did. Over the time Newgrounds users have given me countless advices on countless subjects: love, life, video games, the list goes on. I have no idea whether or not it affected me as a person in real life per se, but I do have the feeling I became a different person on the interwebs in the short span of roughly a year.

Splats:

Yes. Although Newgrounds users are nice people for the most part, the more cynical users learned me that it's okay to have a laugh with people every now and again, and I appreciate how I can make jokes about people now, and they can about me. To be a little more concrete, users like Atlas (formerly J-Rex), SuperGhandi64, Viper, Satan, my fellow Belgians Damien and Amaranthus, Darkjam from the video games forum and JRob were always nice to me, even though JRob is pretty new, like me. Users like Slint and Sekhem really introduced me to what this site's community is like: pretty fucked up. And that's exactly how I like it.

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

Splats:

I'm not a hateful being, and I figure most people being assholes on Newgrounds don't actually mean it, and if they do, I don't really know if I want to give them the attention right now. Honestly though? I've never really had a thing for Dew, Flakjaketpro and Wriggle. Nothing personal.

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

Splats:

The forums are a wonderful place, although I prefer the general forum to all the others, with the exception of maybe the video games forum. And as a matter of fact, I would love you to interview JRob. He's a really nice guy, and since he started posting around the same time I did (or maybe he didn't, we just have about the same amount of posts), I'd like him to get known better.

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Splats:

I got mad at them once for banning me, for responding to a spam thread. They lifted it after a day or two though, so I'm pretty grateful for that. They seem like pretty nice people for the most part though, as they don't seem to feel superior to regular users in any way and just post in the forum like any other person would.

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Splats:

I have no idea. I'm not sure if I'd like to, to begin with, and I certainly don't think I'd do a good job. I wouldn't know when to ban, and I'd allow pretty much everything. Not really much to say here, as I have pretty much no idea how I'd do.

The redesign happened last 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Splats:

I absolutely love it. From the slick backgrounds for every seperate sections to the flash new icons and revised aura's, I pretty much adore everything. But that's just probably me forgetting everything I hated about it last year, I guess I just got used to it, as I barely remember anything else since I signed up in 2010.

You recently played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the first time. Which moments of this game did stand out the most for you?

Splats:

Everything, no exception. I'll keep it short: it's the perfect introduction to a near-perfect franchise. I wasn't a Zelda fan before but a friend recommended I'd play it, no matter what, so I did. And it didn't dissapoint. It may just be my nostalgia tingling, but I kind of miss the magic in games that OoT delivered, without making things too complicated, like JRPG's do nowadays. I recommend every self-respecting gamer to try it out, if they didn't yet. No outstanding moments, as the whole game was pretty magical (just like Robin Williams daughter, Zelda, from the commercial). Except for the underwater temple, of course.

You seem to be a fan of The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. When did you play your first Elder Scrolls title, and which one(s) do you like the most? What would you like to see in The Elder Scrolls VI?

Splats:

Wow, you know everything, don't you! Well, my first Elder Scrolls game was a burned copy I got from my cousin after he borrowed it from the library. I was scared by everything in it, I didn't understand a thing, and I barely knew how to control the game. But my love lived on, and I play Oblivion to date. From The Elder Scrolls VI, I except more dragons, less glitches (I'm begging you, Beth) and the more complex skill system from Oblivion. Yes, that'd be nice.

Alt-J is one of your favourite bands. When did you discover them and what are your favourite songs? Did you visit one of their concerts or plan to do so? Probably better than the Muse live act that you didn't like ( ._.)

Splats:

I discovered them last year, by coincidence. Heard a song of them on the radio, and I instantly fell in love. My favorite songs are probably Breezeblocks, Tessellate and Something Good - they're by far the most well-known songs Alt-J produced. By the way, that Muse act was actually pretty okay, I just expected a little more out of it. No pressure though!

You submitted some sketches to the Art Portal. When did you start drawing? Which Newgrounds artists do you like the most and inspire you?

Splats:

I've been drawing as long as I can remember, really. Whenever something pisses me off, it just keeps me coming back, it really calms me down like nothing else can. I like a lot of Newgrounds artists though: maybe I'm just easy to impress, but the people I'm about to mention really have some talent, in my humble opinion. TheShadling is amazing but definitely not for everyone (you'll see what I mean if you look him up), Choko17, he's just so sweet, Amaranthus, even, although he isn't all that professional his sketches amaze me, and Morthagg is simply amazing.

Splats:

Going to the bone, are we! Well, I touched a girl's booby once I guess finding hentai amazing would come as a surprise to much people I know - there's not many weird things I haven't shared here on Newgrounds though. Guess I'm pretty boring and don't have a lot of secrets. Have I mentioned I touched a booby once?

Splats:

You can expect me to post more, that I perhaps make a couple more sketches for the world to see, and maybe even a flash, as I'm planning a collaboration with an actual animator and we already agreed on what to do it on and such (holy shit, I just let that sink in and it feels amazing, come to think of it). But most of all just more posts. More of me. Whether you like it or not!

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Bit.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username Stevenscar?

Bit:

"In the year 2006 I discovered the Internet phenomena known as Numa Numa Dance. I thought that it was absolutely hilarious and began looking for remixes and parodies as well. This led me to a flash animation called American Idle which featured Gary Brolsma performing on American Idol. There must have been some sort of button or link in the comments because it led me to Newgrounds where I found the original. I had no idea that I was late to the party until I noticed the date it was uploaded and the millions of views it had accumulated since then.

I visited the site from time to time and eventually signed up. I chose my username because it is one I had used a few times previously."

Changed his name to Bit

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Bit:

"When I joined Newgrounds I was a very different person. In the beginning I didn't post on the BBS or write any reviews. It was all about the flash games. I would spend hours playing them. It was a good way to burn some spare time. Then I discovered the BBS. I began lurking and eventually posting. In the beginning, I had a rather unrefined emoticon-filled posting style. Every time I look back on my oldest posts I can't help but think "What an idiot. Did I ever proofread or think twice about anything?" or "I didn't need to put that smilie there. It was implied!" and yet... I don't think I would change any of it given the chance. These failures are what changed me. I started thinking more about what I was typing and somehow worried less about what everyone would think of me as a result.

All the while I also changed in real life. I became more serious. More articulate. Perhaps a bit cynical. Not that I mind being a bit cynical. The changes can definitely be seen when comparing my posts made over the years."

Bit:

"Users that I like? That's a tough one. I don't know any users very well.

I have respect for users that put a bit of effort into what they post. The users whose entire posting history is not simply a collection of one-line, cookie-cutter responses. Especially the users who aren't afraid to take the gloves off and become involved in a debate in a controversial topic. Even the users who craft the (now mostly extinct, it seems) bait-and-switch story threads have my respect for the way they manage to paint a beautiful mental picture one moment and replace it with sodomy the next.

Of the users I've seen posting recently, I suppose I would choose: SneakyGameBoy, Sense-Offender, Magical-Zorse. They all seem fairly level-headed. Of the users I remember from a while ago, Gagsy (insightful, often offering an opposing viewpoint), NuScarab (the old Scarab made a lot of good posts), Comrade (ComradeMolotov - always had good stories, with pics), and I can't remember any other users I particularly liked."

Bit:

"There are a few. I won't name any names for the simple reason that it will only give them more attention. Attention is all they want. It's what they feed on. There are users whose sole purpose of posting is to get as much attention as possible at any cost. Many of them are BBS regulars or users with thousands of posts. Others are gimmick accounts made by BBS regulars with thousands of posts. All of them purposefully try to post as many uninspired, themed, or controversial-without-merit posts as possible.

I choose to ignore them. It's for the best."

Bit:

"There are forums other than General? Seriously, though, I rarely post anywhere but General. It's nice to have a place to discuss things that don't fall into any other category. This makes General a place which can be a dysfunctional forum where all of the threads lack creativity and originality or it can just as easily be the place where a user posts something interesting or thought-provoking. Sometimes both at the same time."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Bit:

"They vary. There aren't any current moderators that I don't like (and the mod who I didn't like was stripped of his title due to gross abuse of power), and the current moderators seem to be doing a decent job.

One thing I would like to see changed is how moderators deal with blatant gimmick accounts and users guilty of mass +1 posting. Neither of them really contribute anything of value to the BBS and they should be given a few warning bans and then banned permanently. The sad part is that they would all disappear if they were no longer acknowledged by users, but that will not happen.

I also wouldn't mind the return of a few of the stricter mods from Newgrounds' past, but some of them also had the tendency to be overly ban-happy, which doesn't seem to happen with any of the new guys. Moderation was never perfect. It never will be. You can't make everyone happy and all of the mods are only human."

Bit:

"Yes. I wouldn't mind doing my part for Newgrounds. I would either be a comment or BBS moderator.

I would be a comment mod because reviews are the lifeblood of The Portal. They've helped thousands of authors realize that their work needs improvement. Constructive reviews are what separate Newgrounds from Youtube.

I would be a BBS Mod because I like the BBS. It's fun to read all of the threads and see (often very strong) opinions from people all over the world. But I would like the ability to clean up a bit of the spam that is posted, as well lock the threads which have gone from civil discussions to nothing but angry personal attacks.

I was also a forum mod on a different website. It felt good to be doing something to help improve the community. It definitely didn't feel like work."

The redesign happened last year. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Bit:

"I enjoy the new design. It's an improvement over the 2007 redesign which was already a massive revamp of what we had before. I appreciate that the general theme has always remained the same: a post-apocalyptic orange and black. The background art is a nice touch.

Userpages are also much more organized now. One of the best features of the redesign is the often-overlooked userpage customization. I like being able to move things around on my page so I can proudly display my list of top movies or perhaps my medals. It really lives up to the "Everything by Everyone" motto now that you really do have creative control over it.

One thing I'm not sure about is the level icons. I know this is still a hotly debated issue. I'm not a fan of them. It feels like they don't really fit in with the style. Not to mention, some of them are completely awful. Look at my level 43 icon. Is that supposed to be Slimer from Ghost Busters? I can't really tell, but it doesn't fit with the weapon theme."

Besides being a supporter, you also got a Mystery Box from the store. What was the item you liked the most from this box? What do you think about the upcoming closure of the NG store?

Bit:

"It would be the Tankmen figure. He stands proudly at the top of my shelf next to the rest of the oddities I have collected over the years. I was actually going to buy one anyway until I had the idea to wait until a mystery box went on sale. It was worth the constant refreshing because I also got a few other great things like Alien Hominid for the Playstation 2 and a classic-style Newgrounds Tank Shirt.

I'm sad to see the store go. I never really appreciated it until I knew it would be closed. I regret not buying more over the years. Now that I want to buy things, most of the things I had wanted are sold out. Ah well. I suppose I'll wait for another mystery box. Who knows what I'll find in this one?"

You jokingly referred to yourself as hardcore retro gamer in one of your posts. What other older consoles besides the GameCube do you posses? Which was the first game you ever played and which old/retro games do you still play nowadays?

Bit:

"I've been playing games for years. It all goes back to the NES. The first game I played was Super Mario Bros. At that point I realized how fun videogames can be and from there I went to other titles like Kirby's Adventure, Super Mario Bros. 3, and The Legend of Zelda. As the years went on, I eventually had a Gameboy, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Gamecube, Playstation 2, and Nintendo DS. Most of the games I played were fairly easy and calm. After that, I began playing an MMORPG which consumed most of my time. At the time that I quit, I had become a fairly high-leveled and successful player, but the appeal of grinding without needing any real skill no longer appealed to me. I signed up for Steam and started playing PC games. It was a much needed change of pace.

Today I sometimes plug in the NES and play a game of Super Mario Bros. 3. It has actually aged very well. I also play more modern games that carry on the "classic game" tradition of thrusting the player out into the world with no hand-holding involved. Super Meat Boy and VVVVVV are the best examples of this. They do not baby you. Especially after the first few levels."

It seems like you are a Pokémon fan. When were you firstly introduced to the Pokémon series and what do you like about it? Also talk about some of your most and least favourite Pokémon.

Bit:

"I started playing Pokémon with Pokémon Yellow. In Yellow, your starter is Pikachu. Pikachu followed me all around Kanto slaying innocent gym leaders and thuggish gangs alike. Pikachu was really the only Pokémon I used. He was finally so completely overleveled that I had no problem sweeping entire teams without switching him out. Not long after one of the gyms, I got stuck somewhere (In the Cinnabar Mansion maybe?) and never really played again. Booting up the game recently revealed that Pikachu's level was in the mid 70s. It was no surprise that he instantly killed everything. More recently, I picked up Pokémon Platinum. That same magic had returned and since then I've played and 'completed' Platinum, Emerald, LeafGreen, HeartGold, and White. I have yet to purchase Black/White 2 and I, unfortunately, do not own a 3DS for X and Y."

Mirror's Edge is one of the most fascinating platformers of the last few years. What did you like especially about this game and are you looking forward to Mirror's Edge 2?

Bit:

"Mirror's edge has a very unique art style. Very simplistic and modern. Modern and somewhat sterile at the same time. It brings you into this near-dystopian sterile and modern environment and casts you as a rebel. The dystopian rebel theme isn't exactly new, but it's nice to see it in a videogame with such a unique style. Even the cutscenes are animated in a unique way. Parkour is also very fun, but only in the first playthrough. It becomes stale the second time around. Hopefully the sequel finds a way to build on this, but I admit that I haven't been following its creation very closely. I'm not sure playing more of the same sort of game would be fun anymore. It seems like the sort of thing that's only fun once."

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username Damien?

Damien:

"When I first signed up I had the name SiMpSoN-Grrrrooooove because I was into The Simpsons and thought I was quite a groovy guy. But the 4 r's and 5 o's made it a bit of a hassle, so I changed it to GayForGirls which caused a lot of commotion on the BBS back in 2007. Then Luis decided I needed to change my whole gay attitude and totally forced me to change it.

I couldn't come up with anything better then my own name."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Damien:

"Phew. There were a lot of people on here that I looked up to (and still do) but lost contact with. The honorable mentions would be EvilJesus and Tribal.

EvilJesus because, we're going to have a small mini meet-up in December, and Tribal because he's just a total bro. The bro-est of bros."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Damien:

"I don't really care about the mods. I met BananaBreadMuffin and Kirk-Cocaine during the London meet-up in 2010, so no one can beat those guys in terms of hearts.

But is BigBadRon still a thing? He used to get a lot of hatemail."

I really disliked the new design because it felt too web 2.0-ish. But when they brought out the userpages and PM's I ended up loving it."

Newgrounds is a place where new artists get the chance to showcase their creative content. From your perspective, do you think that Newgrounds is still an important stepping ground for aspiring talents or did it get a bit overshadowed by the uprising of sites like Reddit where you can share and talk about a larger variety of content?

Damien:

"Pretty good question. Stuff like that has been debated in the inner circles of Newgrounds recently, hasn't it?

I don't see Reddit as a site that overshadows Newgrounds per se. Infact, I think it helps getting more exposure. Reddit isn't a hosting site, it's a site where you can link to content. Without content there's no Reddit.

Newgrounds is still the most user friendly site in terms of uploading and management. So yes, it's a great stepping stone for aspiring artists. There's more normal feedback than on the rest of the internet.

Sadly enough it's popularity is dying, flash is getting a very bad name on the web. So Newgrounds is suffering from that. I'm pretty sure Tom has an ace up his sleeve though."

You created a parody flash of the game The Last of Us, The Last of Derp. What is your opinion about this game? What do you think about the popularity of parody movies on Newgrounds and does it affect the content that you create?

Damien:

"I didn't even play that game. I just saw the 6 hour movie on youtube and tried to cash in on that Youtube gold. Also, I never did any video game parodies and thought I'd give it a go.

Never doing that again."

Damien:

"I just helped him out so I don't really deserve a lot of credit for that. I like Steinberg a lot, he's a very close friend of mine and I hope to do some proper collabs with him in the future! When I was a kid I played a lot on my own so I'm

You particpated in the last Clock Day with your flash All hail the mighty B. How did you experience the Clock Crew and other flash submitting groups in the past? Which Newgrounds special days do you like the most? If you could create your own Newgrounds special day, what would you take as topic and how would it be called?

Damien:

"I used to be a big fan of ClockDay because of all the spam and 5's people would give. Now it's more a habit than anything else. Pico Day will always be the best day. The submissions that get uploaded are amazing + the yearly awards are the tits.

I think 420 needs to be a day. Wee'd get the stoner crowd back, we seemed to have lost them."

Damien:

"I don't know man, Belgium has a pretty cool comic book scene, so I grew up with a lot of french things (TinTin, Astrix&Obelix,...) And my cat is just the cutest, I have some pictures of her on facebook so I'm a real catwhore. She's super grumpy though. I hate that cat."

You took part in the Newgrounds London meet up 2010. Please talk about this experience. Which users were different from how you imagined them to be? What was the funniest moment of the meet up in your opinion?

Damien:

"Oh man. That was one of the coolest trips I've ever had. Just meeting so many people from one website. It was a bit awkward at first, but once the booze seeped in I was good to go. The karaoke bits will always be the funniest moments at any meet up.

I feel a bit sad that I didn't go to the London meet up in 2008 when Tom Fulp joined the party. I'd love to meet that guy one day."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user DarkMatter.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username DarkMatter?

DarkMatter:

"I first found Newgrounds when I was about ten to eleven and a half years old if I recall correctly. My mother had a computer in her office with internet that I could go on, and I would go on there and surf the web, which was filled with sites that were just a bunch of pictures and type and not a whole lot of design. Then I stumbled across this website called ASSASSIN, which was really a beautiful site at the time of its conception, and started perusing the media that they had on the site. I think the search that led me to the site was Kill Barney Game, where I essentially wanted to play a game where you murder Barney (good times). ASSASSIN is what led me to Newgrounds. I waited till I was almost 14 then I made my account, before then I absorbed most of Newgrounds flash culture at the time."

DarkMatter:

"Definitely but I looked back at my older posts and those were more polite and timid, yet still pretty professional for the most part. I think now I hold the BBS in less reverence so I tend to just let things fly now. As far as real life goes, I've gone from middle school, all the way through college (still attending) on NG, I've had several minimum wage jobs, even got a DUI which sort of fueled me to get a more full time minimum wage job so now I have the income of a high school graduate lol."

DarkMatter:

"Mostly folks who aren't afraid to talk to me online, like the people who frequent the Google + hangout. Jay, Techno, ZJ, Tarah, Shauna, Cami, Ashley, Wade, Luis, 4cat, Ryan, MercatorMap, MamaTequila, many more. There's a few others who come to G+ every once and awhile but I talk to on the forums like daethdrain. Most of the people on NG who I call friends are people who I talk to on G+ so I guess that's how they affect me, but daethdrain and I collabed on some forum art threads that got pretty popular thanks to him.

DarkMatter:

"I'm pretty easy going on the enemy list, might have to dust off the cob webs when someone rattles my cage, which will probably be never."

DarkMatter:

"I think the forums are kind of a scattered remnant of a funner time where people were more interested in producing art even if it was just for fun or shitty. Now it seems that there's an over abundance of people who just kind of spread mainstream ignorance and delinquency from other websites that have grown popular only over the past few years. The forums were always harsh, though I've been around for awhile I think you'll find that not too many of these youngsters recognize me as a regular or superior."

DarkMatter:

"I think they try too hard sometimes. I'm not saying they work too hard, but there are times when they will look for the smallest excuse to lock a thread. Everyone knows that the general forum is where people actually discuss things promptly, so it's no wonder that people will spin any topic the way they have to in order to put it in general, but all it takes is one over-zealous mod and that threads been moved to a forum with only 5 people viewing, in other words, nobody is gonna fucking discuss your topic now. It'd be different if traffic across the forums was more universal, but it isn't."

DarkMatter:

"I have more ambitious desires for my life and free time, baby sitting forum posters sounds like it might be cool to a teenager with no meaningful authority in life, but I don't see the appeal. I also don't really have the time to manage things constantly."

DarkMatter:

"Newgrounds was different obviously, we had more local artists who weren't super artists or anything but it really was a golden age of young artists developing what seemed like giant fanbases at the time. People didn't have mountains of good art to explore on the internet, and animations were sub-par.

That didn't stop people from being tough voters, I was one of the toughest ones, in fact looking back I dare say I was unfair in my standards, of course I was also ignorant of the amount of hard work that went into some of the films I bashed. I guess it seems that people were more localized in what they liked and who they admired, it made us more of a community. Back then Newgrounds was pretty much the hottest content submitting website around, so some of these people were literally gods in the eyes of some of us."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The redesign happened last year. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

DarkMatter:

"It's pretty, I like the new project system, even though I haven't had a chance to use it properly, it just seems that a few years ago everyone was collaborating and making some of the best funniest stuff that was NG exclusive. I don't spend a whole lot of time in the collab forums, but it seems all the organizers and participants moved on with their lives without looking back. I think the website is past it's prime, but I also believe that the community can be brought back to its former popularity, NG just needs an exclusive gem that brings people off of Youtube."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Recently the under judgment system was changed, so that stuff can get blammed or passed faster. What do you think about this change?

DarkMatter:

"I think it's important that things are properly judged, so I agree with the change. Coming out of the era of turd of the week and so forth, judgement was convoluted and people were either getting wrongfully blammed or supported. The real issue though, is traffic, and getting people to look at under judgements. People were a lot more interested in that stuff back then."

You bought a T-Shirt and the supporter upgrade in the Newgrounds store. What else would you like being added to the store?

DarkMatter:

"I would like more Castle Crasher knights, I never got into the game but I thought they looked pretty cool for something I could put them on my desk, specially the rare pink ones Luis made. I'd like more shirts with iconic NG stuff, but unfortunately the artists are either off the map or unwilling. For instance, If I could have a scrotum the puppy shirt, I'd eep like a schoolgirl."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Since 2007, you started releasing animations on Newgrounds. Tell our readers when you started animating and if you plan to release more animations in the near future.

DarkMatter:

"I started learning flash and animation around 2003-2004, then got more serious about it around 2008, I've since been going to school and trying to enhance my artistic abilities. In the near future I plan on releasing a series based off a story I've been working on for over a decade now. If I can successfully convey this story, it will probably be the next big thing. If I don't then it'll just be another cool cartoon."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You are also an artist. When did you start drawing? Can you name any artists that are an inpiration for you?

DarkMatter:

"I've been doodling since I was 5 years old, but I just kept sketching and drawing my whole life up to the present. Japanese artist Yoshiki Takaya and his manga Guyver are pretty heavy influences in my work."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

DarkMatter:

"1 secret about me.... IDK any worth sharing lol. Most people don't know that I can be a hopeless romantic at times. When I'm watching a movie like Gladiator or Brave Heart, I know what's gonna fucking happen, yet every time the ending kind of hits me right (or wrong) and I kind of start getting watery eyed. That's something my Grandfather would do, but I never knew until after he passed."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, DarkMatter?

DarkMatter:

"And you can expect a lot more animation from me in the future, I really want to animate two projects now but am torn and yeah, I'm short for time so I better just pick something to do real quick. I can't go into too much detail now, but one is a personal world that I've been constructing for years and the other is a Newgrounds tale I toyed with in the past."

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username RydiaLockheart?

RydiaLockheart:

"I found Newgrounds during my freshman year of college. I ended up stumbling upon some of the video game parodies, which led me back to the main site. Eventually, I began spending a lot of time browsing the site, and finally decided to sign up for an account just before I left for Thanksgiving break. I had already used the username RydiaLockheart on another forum I had been on that was defunct by that point. At the time, I was really into FF7’s Tifa Lockheart, and was trying to pick something that was Final Fantasy-themed and fit with “Lockheart.” FF4 is my favorite game in the series, and I always liked Rydia and her powers, so I used the name Rydia."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

RydiaLockheart:

"Definitely both. When I look at my first posts here, I notice I was kind of a bitch and am rather embarrassed by that. I initially only came on here to watch movies and play games, but eventually gravitated to the forums. I hung out exclusively in the Politics Forum at first because the discussion there was a little more mature than in General, and at that time, the immaturity in General turned me off. But I think I was also being a bit of a snob then too. I still enjoy political discussions, but I think I was being too serious. Eventually, in real life as on Newgrounds, I learned to chill out. I still see plenty of stupidity in both forums, but I don’t let it affect me as much as I used to.

I think a big part of the change in my posts in Politics is due to the change in my political compass. I held some conservative views when I first joined, but I was definitely a college liberal. That began to change in 2008, when I was living in Ohio with a full-time job and out of school. I began to realize that the liberal ideas a lot of college students have don’t work in the real world. I also began to find a lot of them objectionable once I saw how they worked (or didn’t work) in the real world. I am now a center-right independent with some libertarian leanings. If you dig through a lot of my posts from 2005 versus, say, 2011, you won’t even believe it’s the same person."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

RydiaLockheart:

"I spend a lot of time in the Regulars Lounge thread in the Politics forum. Most of the people there are folks I have known for years and like. SevenSeize isn’t around as much anymore, but I still talk to her whenever I can. Some of the others I remember from way back when, like TheShrike, have moved on. I like ZJ and hanging out with him and the other users in the football threads because no one gives me any of that “what do women know about football?” crap.

I also remember one time I had a concussion after banging my head on some stairs and Malachy had to tell me not to lie down like I wanted to. His advice probably saved me from having to go to the doctor."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

RydiaLockheart:

"The people I find generally abrasive are ones in the Politics forum. Fortunately, I can only count the number of people I don’t like on one hand. What’s also good is that some of the people I used to not like have also shaped up. Cellardoor6 comes to mind here. He used to just go and start fights, but now, he can actively debate and back up his views."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer?

RydiaLockheart:

"I gravitate between the General and Politics forums. I’ve posted in the Video Games forum every now and then, but generally I haven’t been playing games that are discussed on there. My gaming in general has been down since there hasn’t been as much I’ve been excited about in recent years, but things are changing now that games are being released for the holidays. There are new consoles coming out too, but I’m not going to run out and buy them unless I know for sure there’s something I’m interested in."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

RydiaLockheart:

"Generally, I think they do a pretty good job. Then again, I haven’t trolled or really broken any rules, so I guess not being on the receiving end of things makes me not have as strong as an opinion as others may. However, I can get away with things on here I would get banned for on other forums, such as a certain four-letter word I use to refer to Senator Feinstein."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

RydiaLockheart:

"I thought about it when I was unemployed since I hung out here more and I love the community. Now though, I’m afraid I wouldn’t have the time to devote to the Newgrounds forums they would probably need from a moderator."

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign?

RydiaLockheart:

"I liked the 2007 redesign better than the latest one. That layout looked nice and it was much easier to find things than it had been when I first joined. Things were categorized better so it was much easier to find content, like certain series, instead of hunting everywhere for links. This was probably because it started switching over to drop-down menus rather than a bunch of text links.

Of course, whatever the redesign, I’ll take it over all the pop-up ads that used to plague the site. It amuses me that they used to have hentai/porn ads back in the day, now that I think about it. What was even more amusing is how terrible they were."

The redesign happened last year. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

RydiaLockheart:

"I’m glad there’s a “Classic Portal” option, because I really don’t like how the Portal looks after the redesign when judging movies. For one, movies and games are separate, and I would miss half the content. I suppose a more detailed view is nice for some people, but the classic view makes it easier for me to decide what’s interesting and what I’d rather not waste my time on. My favorite part of the redesign is the forum drop-down tab which lets me jump from forum to forum without having to hit the back button over and over. That was a pain."

You mentioned that you like the Harvest Moon series. Tell my readers what Harvest Moon is about and why you like this game series.

RydiaLockheart:

"I laughed when I first heard the concept, but the games are quite addictive. For whatever reason in that game, you get a farm. You have to cultivate the land, grow and ship crops, take care of animals, earn money, gather materials, and make friends with the villagers. You can also focus on getting a spouse. The Rune Factory spinoff also has that, but now also has dungeon crawling and stuff like forging weapons and armor. I notice in those games, the interpersonal relationships have more depth, as opposed to “keep talking to her and giving her stuff until her heart turns red”."

In 2007 You obtained the Legend of Zelda game Phantom Hourglass. Looking back, how did you like this game? Which of the Zelda games is your favourite?

RydiaLockheart:

"I liked it, but I ended up liking the game after it, Spirit Tracks, a lot better. The aggravating thing about Phantom Hourglass was that I’m already bad at stealth missions, but they were timed. Spirit Tracks took that out, and I also liked its plotline better, probably because of the characters. There also seemed to be more stuff to do, like chasing down those rabbits."

It seems like you are a football fan. When did you start following football actively and which team is your favourite? I think it's the Pirates. I have no clue about football ( ._.)

RydiaLockheart:

"Well, the Steelers WERE called the Pirates when they were first founded. I’m not a baseball fan, but it’s nice that they didn’t do abysmally for a change.

I’ve liked football since I was little, but I didn’t really start actively following it until high school. My dad is a Steelers fan too and I picked that up both from him and from being born and raised in northwestern Pennsylvania. Apparently when I was little and there were games on, I would crouch down when all of the players were lining up before a play. Then once everyone started running, I would run around the room. I didn’t really understand what was going on, but it kind of stuck with me since then.

I moved to Pittsburgh two years ago to live with my husband, and being a Steelers fan is also part of the city’s identity. It doesn’t matter who you meet, if you both have that in common, you can get along. There’s a saying “when you play Pittsburgh, you play the whole city.” I find that to be true. It’s amazing how everyone can rally behind their teams. When the Pirates finally got out of their slump this year, there was so much excitement. People were happier, and even I got excited, though I don’t know anything about baseball."

In the past years you visited Las Vegas a few times for vacations. What fascinates you about this city and would you kindly talk about one of your favourite experiences that you had there?

RydiaLockheart:

"I just went on a trip with my husband and my parents there last month. It’s really changed from the excessive, over-the-top style it used to be. I miss stuff like the Egyptian theme of the Luxor. But Las Vegas is basically Disney World for adults. There’s booze, gambling, parties, and strippers and escorts, if you’re into that sort of thing. One thing that is fascinating about the city is how much free stuff there is to do there. You can walk around and look at things like the fountain show at the Bellagio. You’re also likely to see performances in the casinos or on the street you don’t have to pay for.

I also love that part of the country. There’s nothing like getting out of the city when you’re a little tired of it and going somewhere like Red Rock Canyon or the Valley of Fire. It’s like you’re on another planet. There are also all sorts of fascinating animals, like the burros at Red Rock Canyon who stand in the road scaring drivers. But yes, it gets very hot in the summer. It was 127 degrees Fahrenheit one year when I was there. The other seasons are generally OK though. One year, I got to watch George Carlin perform at the MGM Grand. That was one of my favorite shows I’ve ever attended, period."

You are married. When you were younger, did you think that you would marry one day? Do you think that the role and importance of marriage has declined over the last decades and what does marriage mean to you?

RydiaLockheart:

"I didn’t think I would. I think that’s one of the reasons I liked games like Harvest Moon so much when I was younger. I basically gave up on anyone ever liking me and lived vicariously through those characters. I was a weird kid throughout school and generally stayed away from people, and vice versa. I had friends, but not that many.

I married my husband because I realized I loved him and didn’t want to live without him. We started off as friends and knew each other for about two years before we even began dating. I think that had a lot to do with our relationship becoming the way it is now. As for marriage, it obviously isn’t as important as it used to be, since populations can generally sustain themselves now and women can have jobs and own property. But I don’t think there’s no reason not to marry someone if you really want to. Despite that, I am against people getting married young. When you’re barely out of high school, you barely know yourself, let alone the other person. And you both will change. If I met my 18-year-old self today, I would not be able to stop slapping her. Once you’re in your 20s, if you’re still committed, I see no problem with getting married out of college. By then, you’re more mature and have an understanding of how the world works."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

RydiaLockheart:

"I wouldn’t necessarily call it a secret, but one thing a lot of people don’t know about me is I survived an indirect lightning strike my sophomore year of college. There was a horrendous storm and I had to make it to class, since it was the first week and I didn’t want to be dropped from the class for not attending because it was necessary for my major. I had a metal umbrella and walked the only way to that building: past a lake. Yeah, dumb idea. I was soaked and there was lightning striking things all around the area. Then there was one point where sparks started running down the metal part of my umbrella before pain seared through my entire body. Then there was a giant thunderclap. I have no idea where the lightning did strike, but if it were a direct strike, I wouldn’t be typing this. I ended up hobbling to the nearby campus police station to take shelter under an awning and told a couple of people what happened. There was an officer there who didn’t want to take any chances and took me to the health center. When they took my shoes off there, the skin on my feet was all roughened up, and it hadn’t been. The nurse said what probably happened was the current came in through my umbrella and out of my feet. To this day, I refuse to carry a metal umbrella anymore. I pay the extra money for fiberglass."

What can we expect from you in the future, RydiaLockheart?

RydiaLockheart:

"I don’t intend to leave this site any time soon. I’ll keep posting on forums, keep watching games and movies, and just generally hang out here. I’ve been here for 10 years now. There have been other sites I’ve moved on from during that time, but not this one. I think it’s because not only has the site’s focus remained the same, but the community is strong and full of great people. There’s no reason for Tom and the others to fix what isn’t broken, so as long as that doesn’t happen, I’m not going anywhere."
