Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user DeftonesFan665.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username DeftonesFan665?

DeftonesFan665:

"I found out about Newgrounds from my older brother when I was around the age of either ten or eleven. I joined last year because I thought I might as well, since I've known about this site for several years. I thought it would be cool to have my own account where I could save all of my favorite submissions and what not.

I chose the username DeftonesFan665 because I'm a fan of the Deftones (Obviously). They were my favorite band when I joined Newgrounds, so I eventually thought of the name 'DeftonesFan' and added the 665 part because the name DeftonesFan was taken. It's a nice number to add to the username, since it's from their song Street Carp, so it's not just some random number, it comes from something."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

DeftonesFan665:

"I've changed some as a user ever since I came out of my shell here on the BBS and got to know what the different people here are like. I didn't make my first BBS post until I was a member of the site for a little more than four months. My shyness unraveled quickly and I became more open to discussing my thoughts and opinions on the BBS.

I guess I have changed a little in real life, too, since I've learned a few things here from being on the BBS."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

DeftonesFan665:

"There are a good handful of users here that are pretty nice and cool people. Exedor, a fellow EGB member, is a guy I talk to pretty much everyday. He's there to lend me a hand if I need help with something, so I want to give a big shout-out to him. Captain-Slugworth, JimmyTheCaterpillar, Painbringer, Thor, Viper, yurgenburgen and my fellow EGB members (including, you :P) are also some users I like here. I'm probably forgetting a few, but oh well."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

DeftonesFan665:

"I wouldn't say that I have actual enemies here and if I've gotten into a bit of an argument with a user or have been offended by something they have said I've been nice to most of them after that in a different thread. But even with that being said, I could never bring myself to not disliking Insanctuary or Spedmallet. Even though Insanctuary hasn't shown his walls of text for a while now, I will always get mad about the thread in which we got into a big shitstorm of an argument in if it crosses my mind. I should've just stopped replying to him before I got so furious in the end, but I really wanted to have the last word in the argument. The reason I don't like him is because he'll just come back at you with a big wall text full of nonsense and irrelevant gibberish if you disagree with him. I debunked his theory in the thread that he made and he came back at me with complete irrelevant tripe trying to sound accomplished and smart.

The reason I do not like Spedmallet much is because he made a thread talking about how he thought homosexuality was a choice. He was just being a gigantic troll, but I could not help but be pissed off since it was a topic that easily offends. I pretty much shut up his trolling nonsense, so it's just a thing of the past now. Moral of the story: Nobody likes trolls. Period."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

DeftonesFan665:

"The forums are pretty fun and you can meet and talk with some cool and interesting people, but then there are also the trolls who want to piss people off for their own amusement.

I prefer the General forum because that's where all of the weird and interesting topics are. It's also where you can find some pretty funny posts that users come up with.

If I had to think of a forum user to be interviewed by you, I would like to see you interview Cronizone. He's a pretty new user here and he's a funny guy, so it would be interesting to read an interview about him."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

DeftonesFan665:

"They don't do a great job, but they do a decent job. I'm judging them as if they are all as one, the mean mod rating, the central value of all of them together. There are ones that get the job done when there is a problem, like stafffighter, EyeLovePoozy, and TurkeyOnAStick. Then there are others that are lacking. I think that Tom should replace a few of the more inactive mods with some more active and respectable members of this site, with all due respect."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

DeftonesFan665:

"I would LOVE to become a moderator of Newgrounds. I would want to become a review mod because there are so many useless reviews that should be removed and it seems like the mods only care about removing the abusive ones that get flagged. I've seen too many of 'this is lame' and 'this is stupid' and 'this is a piece of shit' kind of reviews and they never seem to get removed, they just sit there. It brings down a user's self esteem to see reviews like that and I believe that all user's should get constructive reviews on their submissions so that they have a greater chance of becoming a better animator or game maker or artist. A user isn't going to want to submit more work here if they get more reviews calling their work lame or a piece of crap than helpful reviews full of constructive criticism.

Being a forum mod would be nice too because I think I'm more active than a good number of them so I could lock problem threads quicker if necessary."

It's a wild guess but I think that you are a fan of the band Deftones. When did you become a fan and what do you like about their music? What is your favourite song? Did you ever see them in concert?

DeftonesFan665:

"I became a fan of the Deftones close to two years ago now. People who've seen my username would probably think I've been a fan longer than that, but nope. I kind of wish I discovered them sooner, though.

What I like the most about their music is how their lyrics are written. Chino Moreno's lyrics are metaphorical often enough and it makes you think about what they mean. Either that or it's not very clear what he means, but either way it makes you think. It puts a deeper meaning into their songs and gets you deeper into their music. The next thing in line is how Chino Moreno sings their songs. He has almost a hypnotic way of singing in their softer or even mild songs. He's also a pretty decent screamer when it comes to their heavier songs.

My all time favorite song is and probably always will be Digital Bath. Chino's singing is calm and hypnotic, it's relaxing to me, really. The song has a rather...unique meaning, which is very dark and messed up (I won't spoil it for anyone), but I find the song intriguing, nonetheless. It's a different, but great song.

I have never seen them in concert, but I bet it would be a great spiritual experience for me, hoping that they would play some of the softer songs off of their White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist albums. There are heavier songs of theirs that I really like, but I don't like them as much as their calmer songs."

Since you have chosen Kurt Cobain as user icon, it's fair to assume that you like the band Nirvana. What is your favourite album? You also use a very inspirational quote about tolerance by Cobain as profile picture. Do you think that artists function not only as entertainers, but also rolemodels and thus can transpire important values to many people?

DeftonesFan665:

"My favorite Nirvana album would have to be Nevermind. It has my three favorite songs, Lounge Act, Something In the Way, and Come As You Are on it, along with some other good songs, such as Drain You and Lithium, to name a couple.

I do think that entertainers can serve a meaningful purpose in people's lives besides creating music for their entertainment. Kurt Cobain's music was relatable to young people (and still is) because his music made and still makes people feel that they're not the only ones with troubles, that they're not alone. Nirvana fans have felt that Kurt was (or is) talking to them or for them, which creates a powerful bond between the listener and musician. Anybody can relate to anyone's music (as long as it has lyrics, of course), but Nirvana's music is special. We will never have another musician who wrote songs like Kurt did.

Another great example of how entertainers can have a meaningful impact on people's lives is the lead singer of Otep, Otep Shamaya. Some of her music talks about the dark stuff that people are scared to talk about, such as sexual abuse, self harm, suicide, etc. and it has helped so many people who have found her music. I've seen several people post on her Facebook how her music saved their lives and kept them from feeling so alone in times of deep despair. She's like a female Kurt Cobain in some ways, such as believing in equal rights for everyone no matter who you are, for example.

Back to Nirvana, the reason I have so much respect for Kurt Cobain is because he wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed in. He supported the equal treatment of women and gay rights movements. Referencing the picture of Kurt that I have on my profile page, Kurt believed everyone should be treated equal and that's how it should be."

You are one of the most active members of the Elite Guard Barracks. What are you doing for the group and why did you become a member?

DeftonesFan665:

"Hell, I think I AM the most active member...Anyways, I always do my best to keep this great website clean from shovelware, stolen submissions and other rule-breaking submissions. Nothing special. :P

I joined the EGB because I was very interested in what the club was doing for the website and I wanted to help too. I worked really hard to get my whistle status up and my blam/save ratio to request permission to join. I mean, what better way to help out Newgrounds other than to keep the Portal clean? I love the Elite Guard Barracks and I'm proud to be a member."

You mentioned in your posts that Bob's Burgers is your favourite modern cartoon. As someone unfamiliar with it, what is the show all about and what do you like about it?

DeftonesFan665:

"Bob's Burgers is about a family that owns a restaurant called, you guessed it, Bob's Burgers. The main characters are Bob Belcher (the father and husband), Linda Belcher (the mother and wife), Tina Belcher (their oldest daughter, who is a very awkward teenager), Gene Belcher (their son, who is always saying the goofiest and funniest things), and Louise Belcher (their second daughter and youngest child, who is a demented little girl). They always get themselves into a situation whether it's because of one of the kids, the health inspector (who is Linda's ex boyfriend and still loves her, so he has tried to sabotage Bob a few times), Jimmy Pesto (Bob's rival) or one of the parents.

The thing I like most about Bob's Burgers is that it has some different ideas and witty, awkward humor. As an example, my favorite episode is called Burgerboss, where Bob gets obsessed with an arcade game because Jimmy Pesto beat his high score and put 'Bob sux' as his name. Bob gets obsessed with this game trying to beat Jimmy's high score and gets Carpal Tunnel, so he has to take medication for it. He keeps on taking the medication, eventually not taking into consideration how often he's supposed to take it, which causes him to become really high on his meds and he starts to see people as the enemies in the Burgerboss game. Because of this he becomes really freaked out and tries to attack people.

That episode was SUPER funny and a clever idea."

It seems like you watch Markiplier's Let's Plays from time to time. What do you like about his videos? There have been some Newgrounds animations about him, which one of those do you like the most? What is your general opinion about the Let's Play scene as a whole?

DeftonesFan665:

"What I like about Markiplier's videos is that he's a great commentator and he's entertaining. Mark has a really nice deep commentating voice, so nice that he could honestly do voice-overs for commercials. That's how great his voice is. He just kind of has one of those voices that you could listen to for a while. He's like the Morgan Freeman of Let's Play gamers who do commentating. Also, I know there are a couple other Let's Play gamers that sometimes play games before Markiplier does, but nobody gets scared or acts funny in the same way that he does. Another thing I like about his videos is that he does a series of Happy Wheels highlights and they're always funny to watch.

My favorite Newgrounds animation about Markiplier would have to be the Psycosis one. The facial expressions are priceless and I remember how bad of a game Psycosis was when Mark played it. Those cursed looping door sounds were like nails on a chalkboard and the game also put in items from other horror games to try and make it scary, but it actually made it less scary. It was a ridiculous game.

My general view on the Let's Play scene is that it can be a really fun and great opportunity for someone to get known on YouTube, but I also see it as a difficult thing to start doing, since there's already big names out there and most people want to check out the big names for a playthrough to watch, not the small to no names. You have to have a unique trait to you in order to become popular as a Let's Play gamer. Except for PewDiePie...don't know what the hell happened there. I guess being a screaming man child is unique, but it's not the good kind of unique."

The Last of Us is one of your favourite games of all time. Tell my readers what you like about this game and what your favourite moments were.

DeftonesFan665:

"I love The Last of Us because it created a revolution in zombie games. I love how you actually have to gather supplies to craft items and upgrades, not just pick up money and buy it like you would in some other zombie games. It makes the experience of the game more realistic. That, and you can use stealth to your advantage to avoid zombies. It's not like once you get in a close enough proximity to them that they try to attack you. The Last of Us is also an emotional roller-coaster ride that gets you to feel sad, mad, etc. while playing it. Really making you feel something is what makes a great game because you don't want to stop playing it and you'll never forget it.

My favorite moment of the game is when the main character, Joel, has his daughter, Sarah, die in his arms from a gunshot wound. No, it's not because I like watching people die, but it's because it was, in my opinion, the most powerful emotional moment in the game. I had to try so hard not to cry at that part in the game. I watched Markiplier play the beginning of The Last of Us and I had to try so hard not to cry when he played it and when I got the game myself and got to that part."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

DeftonesFan665:

"Only a few people here on Newgrounds know this, but I'm gay. Nothing too shocking, I hope. :P

Another thing that most people don't know about me is that I've written a LOT of lyrics in the past four years, give or take. I keep the lyrics in the descriptions of my YouTube playlists oddly enough. I can't really play a musical instrument (I do have a couple guitars, though) and I'm pretty sure I can't sing very well, but can I write well? Hell yes."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user NGPulp.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username NGPulp?

NGPulp:

"Well, I've been in and around the internet for quite sometime, I think I only ever went to Newgrounds a few times back in 2008-2010. A friend showed me one of those kill Osama Bin Laden games. We were a bunch of stupid kids at the time. Eventually, my interest for Newgrounds had sparked during 2011 or so when I watched one of ZackScottGames' Let's Plays of Super Meat Boy.

I went on Newgrounds and tried the flash version, I loved it. I played other games and watched some of the movies. It was a grand ol' time. I eventually thought that I should join Newgrounds and submit some games of my own. I found TGF2 and made a bunch of shitty games, my time here during 2011 is rather embarrassing. I was a dumb kid, posted some shitty posts and replied to the reviews like an asshole.

Around that time, I found the NG Archive and saw preserved pages of the old Newgrounds. I spent quite a lot of time there. I found the Wayback Machine, due to that, I spent hours looking at old versions of Newgrounds, playing the old flashes and reading Tom's old articles and write-ups about Newgrounds being controversial.

The fact that Newgrounds was started by a teenager and spiraled into such a huge thing really clicked with me. I think that's why I stayed.

The name NGPulp, though, was a stupid name making decision in my part.

The "pulp" part of the name was added because it sounded like "Fulp"; Tom has an uncle that created a comic series called "Fulp Fiction", named after "Pulp Fiction", a movie that I've been wanting to see for quite a while-- it has quite the strange origin that even I don't remember or quite fully know why I decided to register with the name of NGPulp instead of something better sounding. Must've been because I was a dumb kid strolling around the internet, yet again."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

NGPulp:

"Oh yes, I definitely have changed.

I've gotten better with my writing and I'm less rude. Compare a post of mine from 2011 to something from late 2013. In all honesty I wasn't a shitposter or troll of sorts; I was truly a dumb kid at the time. Man, if only you could delete BBS Posts-- but that'd remove the fun of looking back and feeling ashamed of yourself.

I've changed definitely in real life. Matured a bit; as far as being mature with me goes."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

NGPulp:

"I like lots of BBS users. I wouldn't list them, though. That might lead to some sticky situation.

They don't affect me that much in real life, since I've never met any of them face-to-face. But they've affected me as a person. They're the reason I've actually stayed longer than I originally planned when I came back.

I'd like to do some collaboration of sorts with them sometime."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

NGPulp:

"Quite a lot of those, too.
The shitposters and forum spammers come to mind.

I've got no beef with those who disagree with opinions, though. I just let people do what they do and think what they want to think. I've gotten into a few arguments, but they don't drag on too long."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

NGPulp:

"The NG BBS is a wonderful place, if you play your cards right. A place for casual talk, the occasional joke thread and intellectual discussion.

General is the forum I like the most-- it has everything; from threads about the news, to threads about feces jokes and threads about finding the right asian girl. Lots of the threads there are pure gold.

I enjoy the time I spend here.

As for another one of us getting interviewed, it might never happen, but Dovahkhiin1994 should really get a spot there. He caused a stir and he's shat out threads made of gold. But I doubt he'll come back. Vnzi, too; but she's gone as well."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

NGPulp:

"Yeah, they do quite a nice job of deciding which threads stay alive and which get locked or blasted into space. They also give out nice advice at times.

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

NGPulp:

"Yeah, I'd like to be a moderator of something for once. I don't think I'll have the time or inclination to actually do the job properly, though.

Oh lord imagine if I got a hold of the reins of the BBS."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

NGPulp:

"I like the current redesign. It did a good job of splitting the sections into that handy navbar at the top. The industrial look of it all and the different thematic backgrounds and color schemes look aesthetically pleasing.

I don't like the fact they removed most of the old level-unlockable secrets and that the level icons aren't prominent. I also don't like how they've removed the old Lit section out of prominence.

The Feed comes in handy, though; lets me keep track of my posts and people's replies to 'em."

One of the bands that you listen to is called The Eraserheads. When did you stumble upon their music and which of their songs do you like the most?

NGPulp:

"I stumbled upon the Eraserheads when I heard some of my friends singing their songs-- they recommended them to me so I looked 'em up. I found their music quite nice and I listened to more and more. I understand quite a lot of the Filipino language so I understand their lyrics. I read that they changed the music scene in the Philippines to quite a degree.

A favorite song of theirs? It's a bit hard to say which one I like the most. I'd narrow it down to "Magasin" ("Magazine"), "Ang Huling El Bimbo" ("The Last El Bimbo") and Waiting for the Bus."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You are a scouted artist. When did you start drawing? Which artists inspire you to keep making art? It seems you like to draw cities - can we expect to see a Newgrounds themed city drawing in the future?

NGPulp:

"I started drawing when I was a kid, I drew a lot in my spare time, using old notebooks and pads. They were usually stickmen or oddly shaped people. I read the newspaper comics and watched cartoons-- those were my main influences.

Eventually I got a hold of the internet and freedom around it at age 9 or 10; the art style of some video games had interested me and I had started to draw concept sketches for a game I'd make. I eventually started thinking of more concepts and I'm still working on those concepts and refining them to make sure they don't look like ripoffs.

Some of my favorite artists are: Bill Watterson, Salvador Dali, Alex Hirsch, Pendleton Ward, Matt Groening, Maxwell Atoms and Guy J. Collins; some of the in-house artists are: Geno, Dan Paladin, Fungasm, Egoraptor and Edmund McMillen. Their works have inspired my style of drawing a bit. Album covers, Newspaper Comics and Cartoons inspire me to draw surreal art.

Indeed, I like drawing cities. I enjoy walking about the city I live in, observing the buildings, roads and angles of interest-- I've quite a few city-looking concepts in my head that I've been itching to draw. Yes, you may expect me to draw a city reminiscent of the dystopian-looking one in the old NG logo."

Aside from drawing, you also write stuff. What are you thoughts about eventually implenting a Newgrounds Literature Portal, what features would you like to see there?

NGPulp:

"It should be done. It could be done in the vein of the Audio portal, since flash artists could adapt stories for their movies from writings in this portal and people should need to be scouted first before being put out there. It makes things a bit easier for animators and game devs who have a concept but lack a story-- also puts the "Writer" allegiance to good use.

Maybe Tom's old articles and those fan-submitted ones making a comeback. They're only accessible from here at the moment, hidden away from the rest of NG."

You mentioned in the past how important the art style of a game is to you. Which game that you played had the most impressive art style?

NGPulp:

"It is rather important. The aesthetic qualities of a game adds to the overall (re)playability. It's now how many bits of depth you have to look out for, but rather, how good they manage to work with what they have at the moment. Doesn't matter if it's 8-bit or 64-bit; as long as the artist did a good job drawing those graphics and sprites.

The most impressive art styles, huh? Bioshock, Portal 2, Super Meat Boy, anything released by the Behemoth, Doom (1994), EarthBound, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Mother Fucker Galaxy, Mega Man Unlimited (Fan Game) and Cave Story come to mind."

Calvin and Hobbes is one of your most favourite comics. What do you like about this classic? Does your viewpoint of distinctive art styles also apply to comics and other art in general?

NGPulp:

"Calvin and Hobbes is one of the best newspaper comics out there. The two things I like about it the most are the art style and the writing (go figure). It did good with the characters and with the imaginative scenarios. The style was distinct. It had mixed a blend of cartoon-like people and a dash of comic book-like detail with various objects.

Yes, there's always a distinctive style to each artist and his/her work. It may improve, and the artist may be capable of doing multiple styles of drawing; but he/she'll always leave their mark on their works."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

NGPulp:

"I'd rather not.

It leaves a bit more to the imagination if I kept certain things to my privacy."

What can we expect from you in the future, NGPulp?

NGPulp:

"Quite a lot more art-- some colored pieces next time, maybe a few flash cartoons if I ever get a hold of a Wacom and a license to own Adobe Flash, a game even.

I've got lots of plans, but some of them could remain unrealized."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview is the first re-interview of the series, featuring Amaranthus.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You are the first forum user to get re-interviewed. In the 2 years that have passed, how have you changed as user? What changes of Newgrounds (like removal of chat and store, new feed system) did you like or not so much? Also, who would you like to see getting re-interviewed by me?

Amaranthus:

"In those 2 years, I've definitely matured. I still act like an immature fuck, but now it's because I want to. Though now that I'm almost 16, it might be time to act more like an adult. I'm not going to talk about the removal of the chat and store, nor will I give my opinion about the new feed system. Because I really don't care about them. I was kind of pissed when the store got deleted, but I already have some NG merchandise, so it's not that big of a deal, I guess. I have no idea who you should re-interview, but you should definitely interview SubliminalVirus and  CiviLies if you haven't already."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Since the last interview you became a scouted artist. How did you feel when you got scouted? Your latest work is a robot sculpture, can we expect to see more art pieces for Newgrounds special days from you in the future?

Amaranthus:

"I was really happy when I got scouted, because I've been scouted and unscouted several times in the past. But this time it seems like I'm going to stay scouted. I made a sculpture for Robot Day because I really couldn't draw a proper robot. I definitely want to make more sculptures in the future, and I'm currently collecting the material to make them with. I'm not sure if I'll make more art for NG holidays, when I have enough inspiration, I guess."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

In 2013 and 2014, you teamed up with various Newgrounds artists to work on animations and games, with The Halloween Collab 2013 being one of the collabs that got a daily award. What do you like about working with other artists? Can we expect to see your work in more future collabs?

Amaranthus:

"VaguelyWonderful and me were originally just going to make one Halloween flash together, but he wanted to make it a collab. He couldn't finish animating our part for it, so I wrote a short story for the collab instead. I'm not really a fan of those huge NG animation collabs, I prefer working with one animator instead."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I see that you write poems from time to time. When and why did you start writing them? What is your own favourite poem? If a Newgrounds Literature Portal will ever exist, would you submit your written content there?

Amaranthus:

"I started writing poems during my exams, when I noticed two birds flying in and out of a birdhouse I made in school. I loved it, so I decided to write a poem about them. However, some time after the eggs hatched, my cat killed one of the parents. Which caused the other parent to stop looking after the chicks. My sister and I noticed the birdhouse being covered in flies, and when we looked inside of it, we found about 6 dead chicks. I don't really have a personal favourite poem of myself, when I don't like a poem I wrote, I don't post them. I'd definitely submit content to the Literature Portal, and I think it'd attract new users to the site as well."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Together with JimmyTheCaterpillar, Duckzombie and VaguelyWonderful you have formed the Newgrounds band Dystopians, together you so far released the song Robotologic, which got frontpaged. When did you and the others get that idea to form a group and what kind of music are you planning to create in the future?

Amaranthus:

"I got sick of constantly having to look for a musician when I wanted to make a song, so I decided to make an NG exclusive band instead. After a long time of kicking people out and recruiting new people, our current team was born. JimmyTheCaterpillar and I made Robotologic without a good singer, because Skaren, our singer at that time didn't get the microphone he ordered. He told us to replace him, so I asked Duckzombie to join. We're hoping to submit new songs soon."

It's a wild guess, but since you created the Electronic Music Club, I am going to assume that you like electronic music. Which genres of electronic music do you like the most? What are your favourite electronic music artists and which great songs did you discover through recommendations from other members of the club?

Amaranthus:

"I don't have a favourite electronic genre, because I can barely tell them apart when I hear them.

However, I do have a lot of favourite electronic music artists.
Here's a list:

-Miike Snow
-Hot Chip
-Chromeo
-The Prodigy
-The Subs
-Modek
-Dr. Lektroluv
-Mumbai Science
-Kraftwerk
-The Chemical Brothers
-The Prodigy
-Fatboy Slim
-Disclosure
-Azari & III
-Crookers
-Goose
-2 Belgen
-Compact Disk Dummies
-Kavinsky
-Felix Da Housecat

I don't check all videos posted in the Electronic Music Club, but one time Sense-Offender posted some Autechre songs, and I absolutely loved it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

It seems to me like you are an avid comic reader since you are an active member of the The Endless Crew: Comic Book Club. Can you recall which the first comic was that you read? What are you current favourite, on-going comic series?

Amaranthus:

"The first comic I read was The Amazing Spider-Man #648, I think. I got about 8 translated Marvel comics thanks to some magazine action. I loved them, so I started to look for comic shops in Belgium. After some time I found Worlds End Comics in Ghent, which isn't really close to my house. So I begged my mom to take me there. After some time we took the train to Ghent, and boy it was a dream come true. The shop was pretty small, but they had so many comics, and the guy who worked there was so awesome. I bought 5 comics: 3 Deadpools, 1 Superior Spider-Man and 1 Thunderbolts. I'm going to visit again really soon. At the moment my favourite comic book series are Deadpool, the Amazing Spider-Man and the Thunderbolts."

Aside from reading comics, you also watch a few cartoons, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 being one your favourite shows. For someone unfamiliar with the show, what exactly makes it stand out in comparison to other cartoons? So far Season 1 is finished and Season 2 ongoing, what scenarios would you like seeing played out in the future?

Amaranthus:

"I barely watch cartoons, and when I do, they always have a somewhat serious storyline, with some humour too. Which is exactly what TMNT 2012 has. I think it's a great way to introduce the TMNT to a new generation, and yet it's still appealing to adults. I fucking love it. I don't really know what I want to happen next, but I'm really fucking glad that they already ordered a 4th season."

You are a fan of the tv series Doctor Who. What do you like about this series? What is your favourite episode? From the various incarnations of the Doctor, which one did you like the most?

Amaranthus:

"I don't really know why I watch the show, I just like it. I don't have a favourite episode, because the Matt Smith era (the only episodes I've ever seen, apart from some late David Tennant era episodes) absolutely sucked.
I really hope the Peter Capaldi series will be better.
My favourite Doctor would have to be Tom Baker, but I also like Colin Baker a lot too."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Lepy.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username LepyThedinosuar and why did you change it to Lepy?

Lepy:

"I've known about Newgrounds for a pretty long time. I definitely remember my brother watching Neurotically Yours in 2003-2004 and I thought it looked totally neat-o! So I kinda started watching it, too. I'm not entirely sure if I signed up back then since I was young and I thought the Internet was full of ill-intentioned adults. I also remember being too afraid to go to YouTube in like, 2006 because I was afraid a hacker would hack my webcam and kill me or something.
In late 2008, I kinda got more into the Flash community through AlbinoBlackSheep and deviantArt and I found Yotam Perel and I absolutely loved everything he made. I found his Newgrounds and I thought "Oh, yeah, Newgrounds, the place for Flash stuff. I should sign up!"

I used the name LepyThedinosuar or LepyThedino between 2006 and 2009 because when I was 10, I had a leopard gecko named Lepy and my brother and I would joke about how he's all dinosaur-like. I was sitting there with my brother when I signed up for YouTube and we kinda just decided on that name. He was the one who told me that dinosaur was spelled "dinosuar", too. If only IE 6 had spell check.

On Newgrounds, I changed it to just Lepy in 2010 because that's kinda when I started to realize that having "thedinosuar" or "thedino" in my name was a dumb idea. That's such a Myspace era, scene kid on the Internet type of username. Bleh. I wish I didn't sign up for so many things under that name."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Lepy:

"Well, I kinda grew up on Newgrounds. Like, I didn't have hair on my dick when I first started here, I don't think. Now I do. I've changed a lot in pretty much every area, the way I talk and do things online and the way I do things in real life. I've learned to act more professionally, but in the end, I still have a lot to learn. So here's to change and the changes that're to come! *glass tink noise*
The only thing that hasn't changed much is that I still love making things and animating and all that."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Lepy:

"There are a bunch of people on here that I love. The ones that affected me the most are mainly the animators. Oney, Psychicpebbles, Egoraptor, Eddsworld. Stamper, too, though he doesn't animate much. His humor's top fuckin' notch. There are/were a lot of great, inspiring people from Newgrounds. There's a million, but I couldn't name them all.
There are also people I love from the BBS. I don't talk to people much like, directly. I never really have. DoctorStrongbad and TeslaShockwave are two people off the top of my head. Shout out to them!"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

Lepy:

"There are some people on the BBS who are okay with making others feel as stupid as possible and they're just generally assholes, and it's like, why? There are also some animators I don't like because they pour all their shitty, unfunny writing and into a crappily animated parody and continue to shit up Newgrounds with their video game parodies. There are also a lot of animators who kinda just rip Spazkid and Ego's style (in a nasty combination with shitty, unfunny writing being thrown into a video game parody).
But for every one of those people, there are 5 amazing and talented animators."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

Lepy:

"One that I prefer? Politics. No. J/k. I've literally never touched the political forum. General's where it's at.
I'm not sure who you've already interviewed. I assume at the point of intervewing me, you're already kinda far down the list. I feel like anyone I'd mention would already be interviewed."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Lepy:

"The mods have recently gone under a funny transition. I remember a time when I was dead afraid of the moderators. They banned and locked pretty darned freely. Nowadays, they're a LOT more laid back, but I guess that makes sense since the forum in general's a lot more laid back than it was back then.
I think they do a good job. I mean, they get the job done. They know what they're doing."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Lepy:

"I pretty much only know about the forum mods and the art mods. I feel like I just wouldn't be needed in either place. There's a pretty big list of mods for everything already and they already do a good job."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Lepy:

"It's a decent design. I'm not sure if I like the switch from gray and orange-yellow to brown, gray, and orange-ish. I like the look of the games, movies, audio, etc. buttons, though I think they could pop a little more as they kinda visually compete with ads. The bar at the top with your username and the little square buttons is definitely pretty nice (especially since they added the little star that tells you how many notifications you have). However, I'm REALLY excited for Luis's design. I think it's going to be really pretty and sleek and hopefully he makes the brown colors go away.
I also kinda miss how big the weapons and auras were in the previous design. Now it's kinda like, who cares about auras? Before, it was like being on a team. No one cares now because they're so small."

You are an animator. When did you first start animating? What was so far the most difficult project that you finished?

Lepy:

"I started around 2006, when I used a bunch of .gif animator trials, powerpoint, and MovieMaker/MS paint. Pretty much any way that I could find. Then I learned about Flash and ahem*aquiredit*cough in 2008. The most difficult stuff that I've done aren't finished. I'll safely be able to say that my next Flash is going to be the hardest thing I've ever made. The hardest thing I've ever finished was probably my first TOFA animation. I would animate for really long periods of time because of the really tight deadline. I had to make all that in about 3 weeks if I'm remembering right. It took me a long time to make Hola Pescado and I was pretty scared, but I ended up doing it. Somehow. I'd say it's because the animation's so simple. Everything was really simple, in fact. I wanna get back to being able to animate that simply. Nothing that I've released was ever hectic because I kinda just made it to make it."

Back in 2010, you won a daily award with the submission Hola_Pescado! How did you feel about winning this award?

Lepy:

"I was ecstatic! I couldn't believe my piece of shit Flash cartoon got anything. There was no story or anything, either. I don't think it deserved it, but I'm glad it happened because a few months later, it gave me the confidence to enter TOFA. I'm overall really, really glad it happened. I just wonder why a lot. It's not good or funny animation. I just made some things and put them together. But hey, it's not very often that someone's very first real Flash animation gets something like that. IIRC, it was even front paged for a while. I just...I dunno. It didn't deserve any of that.
But I'll just smile and nod and accept my award."

One of your favourite Indie bands is Neutral Hotel. What do you like the most about their music and which songs are your favourites?

Lepy:

"My favorite song would probably have to be Two Headed Boy pt. 2. What a wonderful song.
Engine, Bucket, Snow Song, and Song Against Sex are some of my favorites, too. There are a lot of great song that Jeff played live only and they never actually got released.
There's a lot I love about Neutral Milk Hotel. The songs bring me to a lot of wonderful, different places from memory. Everything's slow and Jeff Mangum pretty much wrote some of the best series of words ever. "How strange it is to be anything at all."

A lot of the magic's in the live shows. I love how ghetto they were back then! And you should see Jeff fucking jump dance around like a crazy drunk...musician! It's the most kick ass thing I've ever seen! The band were in their 20's or so when they originally toured in the 90's and they would pick people up and throw them into the equipment and AAHHH it was so fucking great! I loved watching them because they were having such a great fucking time!
I saw a Neutral Milk Hotel concert recently and I loved seeing Jeff Mangum rock the fuck out even in his 40's. It was still pretty cool, even no one threw anybody. Jeff was jumping up and down, though! Haha, not bad for being 40.
I'm a little sad that NMH's gotten the wrap it has in the past few years, but oh well."

I think that you have a Leopard gecko as pet. When did you get the gecko? What do you like about having a gecko as pet?

Lepy:

"The one you're talking about, Lepy, died about a year ago. Twas pretty sad. I got him in 4th or 5th grade. He was really cool. I don't have much to say about owning a Leopard Gecko anymore because responsibilities are too difficult for me to handle anymore. I do recommend one to someone who wants a cute little pet. They're really easy to take care of and they're just gosh darn cute.
At the moment, I have a Leopard Gecko named Jeeves. He's an asshole and bites people."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Lepy:

"I like British vlogs and I watch Past Bing Future Bing because it's hella entertaining and I have 2 Flashes I've since deleted from Newgrounds and and and I'm lazy and I like Tumblr and I think it's interesting if you follow the right people and I still think chickens are hilarious and I don't care for Dr. Who or the new Pokemon games like X and Y and now everyone likes me less probably SORRY :("

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, Lepy?

Lepy:

"A WHOLE BUNCH! There's a lot to come and I'm always working on things and Newgrounds is always going to be a place where I tell people about the things I make if it's not the place where I upload something to. I have such a fiery burning passion to create things still. I'm working on two music videos at the moment (ones that I HAVE to have completed) and one of them I have to release first and it's a real bitch to animate because it's not in my style and there's a lot of full body animation but it'll all work out. The other thing is a music video for Nuclear Bubble Wrap and it'll be a lot easier to animate because I get to animate and plan everything out and it'll be in my own style and I can use as many motion tweens as I want (j/k I generally tend to do a lot of frame by frame stuff, but motion tweens are a LOT faster). I have to finish the other thing first, though.

I also have Speshil Sheepy 3, an animation I'm going to be making with my bud Ryan Queen AKA Utentagen, and it'll be the best thing (I hope). I can't wait for that because I actually get to write it instead of animating to music like I have for the past year. Ryan and I are two goofnuts, so I'm hoping this animation'll be nothing but goofs, pranks, gags, and maybe even jokes.

And of course, I love film and I'll hopefully have more live action stuff out.
I've also recently struck something good with my MarioMan64 series on YouTube. A lot of people loved it and I ended up going from 100 subscribers to 1k! I'm really happy to finally have an audience. For once, I can release something and a good amount of people are going to watch. Not sure yet whether that's an exciting thing or a really scary thing. I'm interested to found out whether people like the stuff I wanna make, though."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Radaketor.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username Radaketor?

Radaketor:

"Well that's kind of a boring story actually, me and a friend of mine were watching Vsauce in the school computers when we were supposed to be doing stuff for class, well the video had some links to some games and one of those links led to Newgrounds and that was the first time i visited the site, fast forward two years and I stumble across this site once again and saw a movie on the front page with Vegeta and Scrooge McDuck called Ducktalez 7 by Macaroni-Penguin, I clicked it and saw it had a Rating and Review system so I thought "Eh, what the hell" and created an account for the sole purpouse of rating and reviewing that movie but I ended up getting distracted with other movies and games and still to this day I haven't seen Ducktalez 7.

As for my username, it's just the name of a wrestler I made in the original Smackdown vs Raw game and it's basically the only name I use on the internet, it's a combination of the words Radical (gimme a break, I was about 8 or 9 years old) and some other word I've forgotten as the years went by."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the short time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Radaketor:

"I don't think i've changed much as a user since I've been here for barely 7 months, in real life though, I've got a lil beard so... there's that."

Radaketor:

"I think I like most of the people I've met here. They don't affect me much, I don't think I could care less if people here like me or hate me."

Radaketor:

"No, no enemies. But there is one guy who kinda bugs me, REgalDEmon14, it's not that I don't like the guy, he seems like an ok fellow but his icon tended to piss me off, I don't know why, I think he changed it recently so now I don't think I'll get pissed when I see him posting on the BBS again."

Radaketor:

"The forums are good and I spend my free time there most of the times, I prefer the General forum because that's where most people go, I do check out the other ones every once in a while but I very rarely post in them except for the Club and Crews forum, I go to the Wrestling Club when there's a PPV.

Another forum user for you to interview? Mandeep, SubparTony, WahyahRanger or Vnzi, maybe."

Radaketor:

"Yes, I love them very much and I pray for good fortune to them, their children, their children's children and the family goat.

But I do think they do a good job, I've seen useless threads locked in a matter of seconds so they pay attention and are quick to close the shit valve flooding the BBS."

Radaketor:

"I have no plans on ever being a mod, but I'd like to help the site some way or another so if I ever get proposed to become a mod (not fucking likely) I'd try it out to see if I'm at least decent at it. I'd try to be a good mod and fail miserably at it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You released a few art pieces, the most fabulous being Fabulous Skull. When did you start drawing? Do you prefer to produce digital or traditional art?

Radaketor:

"I started drawing when I was young and then stopped for a while and tried to get back at it a couple of years ago, I don't draw much though, seeing as I get bored easily and I lack imagination sometimes.
A pencil and some paper is what I prefer but since I lack a scanner I depend on online tools."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Persona 3 is your favourite video game. Tell my readers what this game is about and what you like about it.

Radaketor:

"It's about a group of teenagers who have the ability to summon their inner spirits called "Personas", they spend the day time at school and the night time fighting monsters who live in a tower and another group of "Persona" users, it's a mix of a JRPG with a dating sim.

What I like most about it is the story, we get choices and those choices affect the relationships we have with people in the game."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Blind Guardian is one your favourite bands. What is/are your favourite song(s)? Which of their albums do you like the most?

Radaketor:

"My favorite Blind Guardian songs are Skalds and Shadows, Mirror Mirror, The Bard's song, Valhalla and Voice in the Dark.

I don't really like any of their albums more than the other but Twist in the Myth is a very good one, I also think At the Edge of Time is a good one but I haven't really listened much from it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I know that you like wrestling. When did you started to watch wrestling? Which were your first favourite wrestlers back then?

Radaketor:

"I started watching wrestling in 2005 but I have little to no memories from any of the matches of that year, the only thing I remember is seeing Eddie Guerrero all busted open in a shopping cart and a lot of green so I asumed I saw a match of him in the summer of 2005 but I checked wikipedia and I saw he was fighting Rey that night so I'm most probably mistaken, the first match I do remember was the 2006 Royal Rumble in which Rey won.

Haha this isn't gonna be a really popular answer but back when I started watching it was John Cena and Rey Mysterio who were my favorite wrestlers."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Who are your current favourite active wrestlers?

Radaketor:

"Oh that's a tough one, but I'd have to say Daniel Bryan is my current fav, followed by Dolph Ziggler, CM Punk (if you'd still consider him active) and the NXT tag team champs The Ascension."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Wrestlemania 30, basically the most important show of the year for the WWE, happened earlier this year. What were your overall impressions of the show, what surprised you positively and what did let you down?

Radaketor:

"I loved a bunch of things about it, DB's journey to the top was epic and I don't think the world will ever see a guy who was so over with the crowd, I hope that when he gets back he'll be able to get the momentum he had before getting injured, Cesaro did well in the Battle Royal and deserved to win it, the Hulk/Rock/Austin segment was very nice and the Cena vs Bray Wyatt match was actually pretty good since they let Bray give John some offense, those were the things I liked the most, the 21-1 was weird, the watch wasn't even that good but the crowd reaction was amazing, that's kinda the match I'm neutral about, then there's the 6 minutes squash match between The Shield and Kane and the N.A.O. and the divas match, both of them were really useless and not memorable at all, it was overall a pretty good show thanks to Daniel's matches, Cesaro's win and the Hulk/Rock/Austin part."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Radaketor:

"Well I have a girlfriend, I don't think I've ever mentioned her on Newgrounds so there you go. It's more of a shocker than a secret though."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, Radaketor?

Radaketor:

"Either more of my shitposting on the BBS or I'll actually start submiting some quality content."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user DamnedByFate.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username NewgroundsMike?

DamnedByFate:

"I found Newgrounds in 2007 after seeing some games with an NG preloader on another website. One was a Mario spoof, the other was a tribute to Pico. I kind of liked them so I decided to go have a look. And I was impressed. It was the first completely community-driven site I came across, and I stuck to it and later registered an account hoping I might contribute here as well some day. Which, apart from a few forum discussions, I haven't, but let a boy dream.

I chose the name NewgroundsMike because I was 11 fucking years old and couldn't come up with anything cleverer. I don't want to bother Wade about a name change though. It's not that terrible, is it?"

Changed name to DamnedByFate

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

DamnedByFate:

"As a user, definitely. Originally I only came here for the games, but over time I grew more and more interested in the community around here, and by now I'm actually more on the forums than anywhere else. Also, I used to be a total dick in my early years, up to the point where I had several of my reviews deleted, so count yourselves lucky I didn't find the forums earlier. Well, to some degree, I'm still a dick at times, but aren't we all?

As for real life, I can't really tell. I try to keep my real life out of here as best as I can. But, yeah, it's been 7 years, of course I've grown older and stuff."

DamnedByFate:

"I try to get along with everyone on here, although it doesn't always work out. I really like Tom Fulp, because he runs this site, even though he doesn't have to, nor does he get very much out of it financially; he just does it out of passion, and that's also the main reason why I prefer this site over others. Otherwise, I like everyone who's not a spambot or a total asshole.

How do they affect me? I'd say, not at all. I am who I am, and I don't need anyone to tell me who I'm supposed to be. If they try to, they fall under the above mentioned "total asshole" category."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

DamnedByFate:

"I wouldn't really call them "enemies", but some people do manage to make my NG experience a pain in the ass. This includes anyone who feels it's necessary to spam the forums, or any of the portals, for that matter. I mean, I’m here to have fun, and I bet so are most people on here, but some guys apparently have no other goal but to ruin it for us. I don’t want to call any names here, but I guess most people reading this will understand me.

Another thing – if you find me caught up in a seemingly never-ending argument with someone, that doesn’t necessarily mean I hate the other guy. I might think they’re an idiot, but that’s something totally different. As I said, I try to get along with everyone."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

DamnedByFate:

"No matter how much people love to bitch about our forums, I actually don’t think they’re that bad. We do have our fair share of dicks, of course, but they seem to be relatively rare (also considering this site’s history with dicks) and overall the community is quite nice. We’re even capable of having serious discussions at times – although “serious” is relative, for nothing we do or say here really matters. And I kind of like the sick humour around here. And – people will hate me for this now – there’s also the lack of an edit button that people love to bitch about. In fact I think the forums are better this way because, well, somehow it’s part of what makes this site special, it drives people nuts (which can be funny to watch), and last but not least, it would be abused as hell if we had an edit button. Although a preview button would be nice.

One forum I prefer… I’d have to say General, but that’s mostly because I’m rather inactive on the rest of the site and don’t feel like I have much to say about it. In General I can post about whatever I want, so of course I post there most often. It’s also the forum with most activity, perhaps for that reason as well.

And I’ll leave it up to you to decide who you interview. If I have time, I’ll read anything."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

DamnedByFate:

"I think they do a great job. They manage to keep the forums clean while at the same time not acting like assholes towards everyone (most of the time, at least). It still feels like they’re part of the community, not detached from the rest of us or anything. And I appreciate the work they do. And I’m not only saying this because I might get banned otherwise."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

DamnedByFate:

"Is this a trap? Because, well, on the wiki it says asking to be a mod is a safe way to never become one. So if I mean no, I should say yes or something? Ah, screw this. Whatever fate (read: staff) decides, so be it. Being a mod on here isn’t my ultimate life goal (I’m not that weird), but it would sure be nice to help make this site a better place. But if this ruined all my chances now, whatever.

If I had to be a moderator, and could choose what kind, I’d become a forum mod, because, well, that’s the part of the site I frequent most."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

DamnedByFate:

"What I like about the redesign is not so much the design itself (although it’s not bad either, it’s just different), but rather the new features that came with it (some of which were only implemented much later). I really like the new feeds system; it makes it a whole lot easier to keep track of my favourite artists, and my activity in the forums as well. I also like the new wiki more than the old FAQ, because you find stuff quicker now. And I like how user icons are now visible in the forums. If I were one of the more creative minds that drive this site, I think I’d also enjoy the project system, but I don’t have any experience with that one.

As for stuff that’s not so good, well, I don’t know if it’s just me, but it kinda took one hell of time until it worked fine. But still I prefer that over a site run by some big company where nobody actually knows who’s in charge. And then there’s the whistle option that I miss. I’d like to have that one back."

Many of your posts are dedicated to the Corrupt a wish! and the Ask the person below a weird... thread. Do you think that more threads of that nature would be nice to boost forum activity?

DamnedByFate:

"I like the idea behind those threads. They are the proof that forum games can actually work if the creators only want them to. And especially Corrupt a wish! seems to be going on forever. If there were more threads of that kind, I guess I’d post in all of them, because it’s fun. And yes, I do think that could create more forum activity. Just look at me, if it weren’t for corrupting wishes and asking weird questions I’d only have about 500 posts or something. Now excuse me, I need to corrupt some wishes. Be right back."

You had fishes as pets in the past. What kind of fishes were they? Share some funny experiences you had with them.

DamnedByFate:

"I still have fishes, actually. Or rather, I have fishes again, to be more precise. Originally, I started out with some goldfishes (must have been 10 years ago by now), and at some point I wanted to expand and got myself a bigger aquarium. This one ended up being way too much work, and to top it off, the filter in there was open and the fishes kept disappearing in it, never to be seen again. (I could have known as it was a gift from my aunt who had the exact same problems). When most of them were (presumed) dead, I decided to give up on fishes. The few surviving ones I put back into the smaller and easier-to-maintain aquarium to enjoy the rest of their lives, hoping it wouldn’t last all too long. Boy was I wrong. The toughest of those bastards lived on for five years, of which he spent four alone, two without light (because the lamp broke) and at least one with a nasty fungus growing on him. Now I know where PsychoGoldfish got his name from. Anyway, another few years and I kind of got sick of the sight of that empty aquarium in my room. Now I’ve got some guppies swimming in it, and even the lamp is working again, although no one knows why."

Some years ago you visited Rome on a schooltrip. What impressed you the most about this city?

DamnedByFate:

"What impressed me most was watching my teacher empty three bottles of wine on one evening, all by himself. But then they try to restrict our drinking, those hypocrites. Well, on that particular trip, they didn’t actually, we drank every day, and I even found some good beer so I didn’t have to drink the piss they call wine. As you can tell, it wasn’t just the average boring school trip where you’re up all day and visit one church after the other – we were in 11th grade after all, I guess they had some more trust in us. We had lots of time to ourselves (most of which we spent sunbathing on the roof), we drank wine with our teachers, and we still got to visit too many churches for my liking. Did you know it’s a really fucking long way to the top of St. Peter’s? I could have done without that, I’m more interested in ancient history anyway, but much of that isn’t left – we saw the Forum, and some villas, but apart from telling where they once stood, we couldn’t do shit. The Colosseum is still standing, but that one’s way too overcrowded. (Yes, I know I can say bad stuff about literally everything) But one more funny thing I’d like to share: The arch of Titus was put up in order to celebrate Emperor Titus’s victory over Palestine. To this day, Jews are not allowed to pass under it, or else they’ll bring shame on themselves. But neither is anyone else, because they put a fucking barrier around it fearing it might crumble."

The 2014 FIFA World Cup recently started. Are you exited for it? If so, which teams are you rooting for and which match-ups are you looking forward to?

DamnedByFate:

"Being German, of course I’m rooting for Germany. We’ve kicked things off well (pun intended) with 4-0 against Portugal, and I hope we can keep that up. As for other teams, well, Costa Rica have been doing a pretty impressive job so far, beating no less than three past world champions. And I’m glad that both Italy and Spain are out already, it’s about time for someone else to win. And of course we have to keep Brazil in the tournament as long as possible, because once they’re out we can all quit and go home, for there’ll be riots."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

DamnedByFate:

"I kind of feel like I have already told you too much about myself. I’m not the kind of person to go and tell my life story to everyone desperate enough to listen (It’s for that reason I don’t have a facebook account, nor one on any other social network). Hardly anyone really knows me, and I’d like to keep it that way. You’ll never know my real name, for that matter, unless you happen to be my future employer or you manage to pull an NSA on me. If there’s anything you don’t know about me then perhaps you shouldn’t know. But one thing you should know is that you guys keep me alive. Basically, whenever I’m not on NG I’m working, and I need NG to get all that shit off my mind. If I couldn’t let out the dickhead inside of me on here, it would consume me. So, thanks, I guess."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user WahyahRanger.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username WahyahRanger?

WahyahRanger:

"I guess I've known about Newgrounds for years, playing flash games from here, but on different sites. I don't remember exactly what inspired me to become a member here, but it was early this year, and I started making occasional art. As for my username, "Wahyah" is Cherokee for "wolf", with a slightly different spelling. I've always enjoyed Native American culture and I decided to incorporate that into my name, and then Ranger just implying my career interest. However, I may change my username soon, or I may keep it. I haven't decided."

WahyahRanger:

"Well, from the time I became a member here, I got a new job and finish my first year of community college. I'm definitely happier with my new job, because I was working at McDonald's, and now I work at a furniture store, so I'm not stuck in a hot greasy kitchen for 8 hours a day. The first year of college kind of kicked my ass, but I think I learned I can't be so forgetful this year, for things like homework and studying. As a user I learned to stop posting things that people found upsetting or controversial on the BBS."

WahyahRanger:

"I like all the users here. Everyone on the BBS has a bad day, week, or whatever and sometimes say off-color things, but they never really mean it. On top of that people sometimes have opinions that you disagree with, and you might tease them, but in the end it's okay for them to think what they want. I'm trying to be more accepting of that lately, including with myself, because everyone came here hoping they had something creative to share with the world."

WahyahRanger:

"Nope, maybe just the occasional abusive alt that disappears in a day or two."

WahyahRanger:

"The forums are pretty cool, it's definitely a time-killer for me before work or at night. You have people from all kinds of places and backgrounds interacting with each other. I do tend to use General more than the others, but do go to the Art forum for critiques. As for other users to be interviewed? Just anybody that has potential."

WahyahRanger:

"I think they do a great job. I haven't had any issues with them personally. My only complaint is when I occasionally see a moderator that has locked a thread and perhaps insulted the OP by calling them "stupid" or something. They are the example here and I think they should try to refrain from saying things like that."

WahyahRanger:

"Nah, I think I'd decline on any offer I might get on that. I feel like I don't have enough time to devote to it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I think you used the Newgrounds Featureless Chat regularly. Looking back, what were the best memories of the chat for you? Would you like to see a new Newgrounds chat in the future and what features would you like to see?

WahyahRanger:

"Newgrounds Chat was just something to use while my History professor was yakking at us. However, one advantage of it was people being able to respond to your thoughts or questions almost instantly. I think it'd be cool to bring back a chat, maybe with some features, who knows?"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You mentioned that you want to start a comic within the next few months. Can you tell us more about this upcoming project?

WahyahRanger:

"Yep, I do want to write a comic series eventually. I like buddy-adventure cartoons like Adventure Time and Regular Show, so I kind of want to do something like that, but also make it my own. I'm still tossing around names and idea, but it's going to follow the events of a young man who leaves life in the city to live in the fictional Arcane National Park, where he meets his spirit animal, a fox, and is asked by the spirits of nature to become the guardian of the park. I have a lot of ideas to be put into this, but I need to practice my art skills more first."

Sometimes you play tennis with your friends. When did you start playing? What do you like about this particular sport?"

WahyahRanger:

"Just earlier this spring, and I still suck at it to be quite frank. I mostly started playing because my buddy wanted me to, so I guess I like it because that's mostly how we hang out."

So far you have released 3 art pieces to Newgrounds. When did you start drawing?

WahyahRanger:

"I really haven't done too much drawing since art classes in high school, mostly because I never really thought I was too good at it. However, I'm trying to learn and get better. I have a drawing class this fall in college that I might learn a thing or two from. Regardless, I think I'll still be doodling for a long time, and uploading to Newgrounds."

You want to be an ecologist. What fascinates you about this job?

WahyahRanger:

"The thing that interests me most is that I'll mostly be able to be out in the field as opposed to sitting in an office all day. They say that if you love your job, you'll never feel like you're working, so being an ecologist would be my ideal career. I'm hoping that being an ecologist takes me to a lot of different and beautiful places."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

WahyahRanger:

"I don't know that there's anything about myself that I couldn't tell people, so i don't have any real secrets to speak of, not that I can think of right now anyways."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, WahyahRanger?

WahyahRanger:

"Probably, and hopefully, a lot more art coming. I'd like to improve a good amount before I start my comic. I'm going to invest in a drawing tablet eventually, so drawing is quicker and easy, seeing as though I've been using a computer mouse. I might try my hand at animating at some point, also."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user HeavenDuff.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username HeavenDuff?

HeavenDuff:

"Well, I joined in August of 2004… and thanks to your interview, I now realised that I will celebrate my 10th year anniversary as a member of Newgrounds. But I knew about this website well before that. In 2004 I was 14 years old, but I already knew about the website since elementary school, so I’d say that was somewhere between 1998 and 2001. My big brother and his friends were talking about this website a lot, and so were some of my elementary school friends who also had big brothers. I finally joined in 2004, most likely to be able to access the most interesting features of the website, such as being able to have a profile page, increased voting power and of course, being able to post in the BBS.

I also just now realised, while thinking about what I’d answer to your question, that I created the nickname HeavenDuff specifically for my Newgrounds account. Duff was already a nickname of mine, based on letters from my real name combined together to form the word Dof, which doesn’t mean much… But I was a big fan of The Simpsons back in the days, so I changed Dof to Duff, which is Homer’s favorite brand of beer in the series. Duff was already taken, so I had to add a little something to the name for it to be accepted, and I didn’t like the idea of just adding a number to the name, I wanted something unique. I assume that Heaven was just that awesome of a word to my 14 years old self and it also referred to mythological, fantastic and imaginary universes, which were and still are very appealing to me. I also used to play a lot of Diablo 2 in the early 2000, so it might have also inspired me a little as well."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

HeavenDuff:

"I sure hope so! I was a teenager back then, and didn’t know much about the world and what I wanted to do with my life. My first posts on the BBS pretty much show how much of a kid I was. Since I’ve joined, I have completed my high school, I’ve went to what we call CEGEP here in Quebec (which is a school between high school and university), I’ve completed my bachelor degree in political science and started my master’s degree in the same field.

During that ten years, I grew up quite a lot, I met my first girlfriend in 2005, went out with her for almost three years, broke up, then met my actual girlfriend, whom I’ve been going out with for almost seven years.

Needless to say, I’ve changed quite a lot. I also hope that it shows in my posting on the BBS. I’m much more confident as a person, I have a better self-esteem then I had as a teenager, I’m much less prompt to jumping into a fight and getting angry at other members of the BBS, and I’m all around more educated, more passionate about the things I do, much more nuanced and I put effort in what I contribute to Newgrounds. Most of the time, at least, haha!"

HeavenDuff:

"The boys from the Metal Hell are the users I like the most here on Newgrounds. Guys like Sense-Offender, Nev, Viper, Bahamut (who is now named Murray, I believe) and others of the Metal Hell were very welcoming and knowledgeable in terms of great music. Sense and I share very similar tastes in music, but also in various other artistic fields such as cinema.

A few years back, I was the leader and founder of the Call Of Duty Clan of Newgrounds, which changed name and changed location as the newer games came out and I had to figure new names out for the clan’s headquarter. But within this clan there were guys whom I’ve spent so much time discussing and playing great CoD games with. We kind of went apart since that time, but they’ve been a part of my life for a good three years or so. I’m talking about guys like TheUnknownVoice, TheRipper00, ShadowWest, BobbaQ, Torkelson.

Members like Dr-Worm also come out to me as very intelligent, well-spoken and all-around well-informed members whom you can easily have great discussions with.

There are other users that I like for the pieces of art they share with the community, such as Sexual-Lobster, Krinkels, Doki and TheWeebl for their amazing (and often very inspiring or humoristic) flash animations. I’ve recently also discovered a visual artist who works under the name of keepwalking, here on Newgrounds. I highly recommend his pieces of art, they are mind-blowing!

These are all users who affect me in the way that they are making Newgrounds a nice place to come and visit often."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

HeavenDuff:

"A few years back, a user named cellardoor6 was around a lot, and discussions with him would easily go down a slippery slope and become unpleasant confrontations. I know that a lot of other users feel the same about him, since I’ve read comments that were openly critical to his behavior and posting habits. I wouldn’t consider him an enemy, but rather just someone I didn’t like facing in a discussion.

Apart from that, members who troll or who are just all-around bad mannered are somewhat annoying to me, but I don’t consider these individuals as enemies."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

HeavenDuff:

"I like the Clubs & Crews forum the most. Through the years, there have been a few clans and crews that I’ve been a part of. I’m still an active member of the Metal Hell, as you know, but I’ve been an important member of The Call Of Duty Clan Headquarters in the past (and The Call Of Duty World At War Clan, The Cod Modern Warfare Clan and Call Of Duty 4 Clan Headquarters, before that). Even before that, I was a member of the Quebec Club, which is now dead since the Mods and Admins came to the conclusion that it was too hard to moderate clubs in other languages then English. We were allowed to recreate it, but the members of the club never quite came around to doing so. I still like to pay a visit to the Cinema Club and the Last.fm Club every now and then, but I’m not quite active as I used to be in the C&C. It’s still my favorite forum, though. It’s the place to have thoughtful discussions and debates with users who are passionate about the things they are talking about.

The General Forum is pretty much hit and miss for me. Most of the threads don’t have much appeal to me, but I still lurk around and post whenever something catches my attention!

And is there another forum user that I’d want to see getting interviewed by you? Well… you’ve already interviewed most of my buddies and favorite users ( Natick,  Dr-Worm, Sense-Offender, Viper). Maybe… if you could get some flash animators like Sexual-Lobster or  Evil-Dog, that would be pretty awesome!"

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

HeavenDuff:

"They are doing a great job for sure! Even better than before, I’d say. I think that Wade might have come up with the best moderation team. This, or I’m just a better poster then I used to be and I don’t get banned as often as I used to be, haha! In fact, I don’t think I’ve been banned from the BBS in at least 2 years. That might be why I’m biased in favor of the actual mods, haha!

But in all seriousness, I think the BBS is a pretty pleasant place to be nowadays. It’s kept pretty clean, and I don’t see overtly acts of heavy verbal violence or intimidation. It’s an internet forum, so it’s bound to see some shit happening every now and then, but all in all, the moderators are keeping this place pretty clean! Not to mention that most members are pretty cool people anyway!"

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

HeavenDuff:

"I’d like to, sure! For the prestige and to be able to flaunt it at other users’ face! Haha!

If I was to be a moderator, I’d like to be a BBS moderator. It’s the place where I spend most of my time, and I always like to contribute to the communities I like. And seeing how Newgrounds as pretty much been my Internet house for the last ten years, I’d be more than happy to help making this a better place for everyone."

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign

HeavenDuff:

"To be quite honest, I don’t remember much of the redesign, except for the fact that the website looked very old school and that it had an awesome 90’s website feel before the redesign. If anything, the redesign gave it a more modern look, which is all cool by me. I don’t remember even hating anything about the 2007’s redesign."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

HeavenDuff:

"Most of the redesign I agree with. I’m pretty happy that the members obtained a more customizable space for them, like with the news posts, the profile pictures, the BBS icons, etc. It was a pretty nice add to the website. Only thing I didn’t like about the redesign is the level icons designs. They don’t look as good as the previous ones, and I also am not quite fond of the new auras. I liked the neutral, light, dark auras of the pre-2007 redesign. Even the post-2007 redesign with two more auras added (Fab and Evil) was kind of nice, but I don’t like the auras now."

Back in 2009, you had a series called "Song of the week", reviews of songs on your userpage that you released weekly. Why did you start making those and can you imagine to continue this series?

HeavenDuff:

"It was a little project that I started doing, mostly for myself and in hope that maybe others would like it. But it didn’t get very popular, and I’ve pretty much abandoned the project and focused on writing album reviews for the website Metal-Archives. MA is a much more specialised platform for these kinds of reviews and they attract much more readers. If there is a way for me to contribute to a music fans community on the Internet, I think it’s the best way for me right now. It’s not too serious, I can do it whenever I want, and I don’t have any contract or deadline to follow. I just do it whenever I feel like it. I don’t think I’ll ever continue the Song of the week series."

Above the Earth, Below the Sky by the band If These Trees Could Talk is one of your most favourite albums. What makes this album great in your opinion? Which songs of that album do you like the most?

HeavenDuff:

"If These Trees Could Talk is in my opinion, one of the greatest post-rock bands out there. They stand among the greats like Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Above the Earth, Below The Sky is their first full-length album and it’s amazing from the first second to the last. It’s instrumental post-rock at its finest. It’s immersive, emotional, passionate and it resonates in your ears and brain. It combines elements of very melodic and smooth post-rock with the more aggressive elements usually found in post-metal, but that are slowly sneaking inside post-rock to create dynamic and powerful albums like Above the Earth, Below the Sky.

I couldn’t pick a favorite track from this album, but I’d say the first half is definitely making this album stand among the greatest albums of our era. So tracks like From Roots to Needles, What's in the Grounds Belongs to You, Terra Incognita, Above the Earth, and Below the Sky are all tracks I would recommend. But listening to the whole thing would make the experience much more interesting."

Metal seems to be your favourite music genre. What was the first metal band that you became a fan of? Which aspects of metal music do you appreciate the most? As member of the Metall Hell club, which bands did you discover through recommendations from other members of that club?

HeavenDuff:

"In high school I was introduced to metal music by some of my friends through bands such as Edguy, Kalmah and Children Of Bodom. Before really digging into metal, I was quite a big Slipknot fan. The first legitimate metal band that I became a fan of was most likely the melodic death metal band from Finland, Kalmah. But I also owned the first four albums of another Finish metal band named Children Of Bodom. So it’s definitely one of these two that really got me into metal.

Metal is an umbrella genre, really. Which means that just like Jazz, and Rock, it’s pretty hard to explain what I like about the “whole genre”. If there are elements that are found throughout most of the subgenres and within the music of the best bands of these genres, it’s most likely the sheer emotions and creativity that flows through it. Metal is a rollercoaster of emotions… it plunges into the abyss of dark and sorrowful emotions, but it can also be uplifting, promoting courage, hope and freedom through creativity and self-accomplishment. Metal music also manages to be at the avant-garde of music exploration. It pushes the boundaries further and further all the time!

As a member of the Metal Hell, I discovered at least half of the metal music I listen to nowadays. Through discussions, recommendations and endless debates, we share stuff, discover new things and learn all the time. It’s a collective effort that pays off for all of us. Some notable discoveries I’ve made in the Metal Hell are bands like Agalloch and Boris, which are now two of my favorite bands, and all avant-garde stuff like Sigh or Arcturus, which were recommended to my by Sense-Offender."

I think that you are a fan of Tim Burton. Which of his creations do you find to me the most fascinating?

HeavenDuff:

"Somewhat, yes. He’s not my favorite director, though. I still like his style in some of the movies he worked on. Edward Scissorhands, his Batman movies, Beetlejuice, and A Nightmare Before Christmas were all movies that I really liked. I also think that 9 and Sweeney Todd are rather overlooked when people discuss his work. 9 was particularly interesting in the mood of the movie, the atmosphere and the main character had a pretty interesting development.

Let’s just all forget Planet Of The Apes though…"

Back in 2006, you stated that Chrono Trigger is your favourite RPG of all time. Tell my readers what you like about this game. Also, which RPG's that have been released since then do you like the most?

HeavenDuff:

"Chrono Trigger was released in 1995 on the SNES and it was amazing back then, and it’s still amazing today. It’s a flawless game. The soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda complements the game and characters very well, as all the main characters and member of Crono’s team have their own theme. As a kid, I just loved Robo’s theme and Frog’s theme. And with the exceptional character development, you feel so much more immersed in the story are you start to really care for these characters. The fight system is also very cool. The different attacks are all great to look at, and the fact that the different characters all have special attacks and moves they can perform together, makes it all that much more interesting to decide which characters you want to have in your team and at which moment. The game also allows for the player to decide what to do at some specific points in the game, and with the New Game + option, you get the chance to replay the game with all your gears and levels, but chose when to fight the final boss, offering a multitude of different specific endings for when you decide to fight the final boss and with which characters.

Since Chrono Trigger, there have been other RPGs that I’ve loved. I might disappoint some of you, but my other favorites are the Knights Of The Old Republic games on Xbox. I just love the Star Wars universe, and these were great adds to an already fascinating story.

Another game I love is Earthbound, but it came before Chrono Trigger. I’m still allowing myself to mention it here, since it’s probably a close second after Chrono Trigger."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Kel-chan.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username Kel-chan?

Kel-chan:

"Originally back in 2004 in college. My roomie introduced me to NG. I wasn't active but watched a couple flashes I think and that was it. The site back then was too pornography oriented but it did have some funny stuff. It was just and oddity at the time and I didn't really spend alot of time on NG as I had alot of real world stuff to mess with. Incidently that's about the same time I started watching Anime on toonami like a fiend. Also Adult swim was pretty good then and that's when I first found out about it. Probably the only good thing about my college experience. Adult Swim, anime and NG.

At first my username  was 2030films I think. Then I had Wade change it to Kel-chan since I was making a bunch of animation things and Kel-chan is easier to remember than 2030films."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Kel-chan:

"Nope. Still the same except more addicted to making stuff I guess. I was only on NG I think since 2011. I wasn't on NG between 2004 and 2011."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

Kel-chan:

"Ugh the forums. I try to stay away actually and only started posting on them more when the NG chat went away. I used to post in Politics from time to time but it's terrible there. The general is great for posting BS and reading silly things. I don't really know anyone on the forums to interview though."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Kel-chan:

"I guess the best things are the updates to the Portal and Project Management system. That Project Management system really is great to organize big collabs n junk. Before there were some issues editing videos if you made a mistake or something. Though it didn't really matter much, because my submissions were basically crap at the time and most of them still are."

You have won a handful of awards, with Shinobi Noir- Ch 1 being the first. How did you feel back then about winning your first award?

Kel-chan:

"I guess I was happy for 5 seconds. But the only reason I've won awards is because I release things at odd times most of the time when the big animators don't put anything else. So it's like a contest of crappy animations so it's easy to get an award when you compare something I made to stick figures or really terrible animations. It's the best of the worst. Which is fine to me."

You started the succesful Shinobi Noir series back in 2011 and submitted a trailer in 2013. Can we expect to see more parts of this series in the near future?

Kel-chan:

"Shinobi Noir is weird. Originally the series took place in ancient Japan and was like a Samurai Spaghetti Western. I basically wanted to make it like a Kurosawa film but the art sucked. Also I was using a program called Anime Studio that was terrible for frame by frame animation. I didn't start using Adobe flash until the GPS series when I got a tablet. The old Shinobi Noir was all done with the mouse and it was really annoying.

As for the New Shinobi Noir, that was a short trailer thing for the Machinima film festival. They wanted an actiony thing and I made that trailer in like 2 weeks. It was really annoying because the Machinima film festival was something that people have like a year to make a movie for and I had 2 weeks notice from machinima.com. I should have refused because that amount of time is ridiculous but I did it anyways. I wouldn't have gotten it done if it wasn't for Filarius and Phenomenally. They helped me alot with coloring the frames.

For that series I decided to make it more modern and wanted to make it more like a Ghost in the Shell cyberpunk thing. I also started a brief manga on it but scrapped that to work on something else.

If I redo it, I want to try it as a CGI movie instead of an anime. There's just so much I want to do with it but it's impossible to do solo in 2D. It would takes months to make an episode the way I want with the camera angles and 3D effects. I might make it a 3D anime once I understand this 3D program and get a better camera to do mocap with. I dunno."

One thing that is very apparent is your steady improvement when it comes to your animating skills. What tips can you give other aspiring animators to keep on track and find their own style? Likewise, were/are there other animators that give/gave you tips?

Kel-chan:

"Well I'm a terrible animator really. I didn't go to school for animation and only started drawing more seriously in 2008 or so. But I guess the best idea is to just draw alot. Learn to draw the human form. Don't be afraid to use references but try not to depend on them too much. I have alot of problems with this. Have alot of patience if you want to animate.

The biggest person that gave me tips was Sacros on the NG chat. He's not even an animator. Well not seriously at least but I used to go on the chat and monopolize it asking Sacros how to "make teh animays". Everything elseI found out from tutorials and forums and junk and experimentation. It still sucks because I can't make what I want. I'm terrible at coloring and shading so I can't achieve the look I want as far as 2D stuff goes. It looks so crappy and amateurish it's really annoying. I think I need to learn photoshop more and after effects.

TechLeSSWaYz is really cool too. I learned alot just watching his sprite animations and fights. He's a great fight choreographer."

Parodies seems to be something you enjoy creating. We already saw Goku and Superman fighting off and a mix of Dragon Ball and Pokémon. In your opinion, what does a parody need to be a good one? What kind of parodies and possible mix-ups of different Anime worlds would you like to create in the future?

Kel-chan:

"Actually I hate parodies. I don't want to make them. I could probably be more successful if that's all I did. I could almost guarantee if I made parodies of animes I would have 3x the subscribers and a bunch of frontpage stuff but I'm tired of that. I think parodies need to die on NG. We need more original content. Even if its a fan-fiction story. The problem is parodies are quick and surefire hits if they're even moderately funny because everybody will click on the Mario, or Pokémon, or Sonic or DBZ icon if they see it.

I've thought of things I want to make in the future but until I figure out how exactly to make them it probably won't happen."

You recently started your very own manga Aries Sky. Tell my readers what Aries Sky is all about. Which mangas inspired you to create your own one? Which aspects of creating a manga did you find difficult to get right when you first started ( I am not an expert, but what I mean is like making scenes clear, placements of the bubbles and how the panels are placed on each site to create a good flow)?

Kel-chan:

"Ugh. Aries Sky came up when bocodamondo and I were chatting on Steam and he was bored of doing DBZ multiverse and wanted to make a project together. So we thought up that series. Well the characters atleast. Afterwards though he decided to go make DBZ multiverse and is busy with that so I started the manga just as a storyboard really for yet another animation. It turned into a manga, i dunno why. Its not particularly good or novel.

Aries Sky is basically every average anime/manga story ever. All of the tropes and 'isms atleast. I have a vague idea of what I want to do but its not really interesting to me. I'll probably put some twists in, some character growth and progression so its interesting but I can't say I really think about it. Its a side project.

As for mangas. I only read two mangas. Ranma 1/2 waaaay back in the day and Attack on Titan up to chapter 50 or so. I don't really care for graphic novels or mangas. As for paneling- I don't know anything about that. I just use a bunch of templates for pages that I found online and customize them as the page needs. Dunno anything about flow or page design either. I guess if it looks like a manga that's good enough for me but I basically slap it together any old way.

I have no training or anything with art or animation really. I just watch Youtube tutorials and copy other peoples setups and stuff."

Your most recent work is the LOTOE Trailer. What do you like about the Star Wars universe and what inspired you to create your own, dark version of it?

Kel-chan:

"I have a really bad memory, so I don't even remember why I started making a Star Wars thing. I think it was because I was playing the SWTOR MMO and saw Bioware's CGI cutscenes and wanted to do something like that. I dunno. It probably won't turn out that well, things never do and I'm new to making this 3D junk. As for liking Star Wars, it's just like everything else. Cool lightsaber fights and acrobatics. I could do that with other series like Shinobi Noir, the only difference is that in Star Wars the swords glow."

Aside from great animations, you also ventured into making music. When did you start making music and which programs do you use?

Kel-chan:

"I made those songs back in 2004-2006. I used to play guitar alot but stopped around 2007-2008. I don't really remember what program those songs were made with."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Kel-chan:

"I went to college for 2 semesters, a summer and fall semester at Penn State main campus in 2004. But. I never went to class. Not once. I roamed around the campus, sat on the bus and made the loop. Wandered around like a homeless bum and fed the pigeons and squirrels and never set food in a classroom or bought a textbook. Affirmative action for you.

I did get a job during that time, as that was what I wanted to do after graduating HS. I hated school. Still hate schools. Always will hate schools."

What can we expect from you in the future, Kel-chan?

Kel-chan:

"Ugh...Probably going to finish a Star Wars 3D vignette. Galaxy Police Squad 5 voices are recorded so I can do that. Also Jay and I worked on a series thats about 75% done and just has to be colored in. Maybe I'll do a police cops 2 in the future.Too many projects and I hate all of them. Anyways thats enough stuff to end out the year."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user SansNumbers.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username SansNumbers?

SansNumbers:

"I found Newgrounds back in like 2006 or some year way back enough to remember that the website looked way different and there were new episodes of TooF and Knox's claymation thing coming out. I don't think I made an account back then, so if I did it's probably gone forever. I remembered that the website existed in 2010 and decided I'd make an account because why not. I chose SansNumbers because it flows well and I don't like using numbers in my username."

SansNumbers:

"Absolutely. I've known about Newgrounds for half my life (which is shameful btw. If you have kids please don't give them computers) and a lot can change in eight years, especially one's voice. As a user, though, my posting has remained largely in the same style, just less stupid and 12-year-old-ish."

SansNumbers:

"Tateos was the first person I actually talked to on these forums and he's the only notable user to me really, even though he hasn't posted in a while. The rest just kinda blend together."

SansNumbers:

"Making enemies on the internet is a really ridiculous thing to do and I haven't done it in years."

SansNumbers:

"The forums have their ups and downs. For one the topics in General are very accessible but it's just kinda the same stuff. I post there a bunch but to be honest the Politics forum is more of a joy to read. I don't know any users enough to want to know more about them."

SansNumbers:

"The moderators here are a lot more robotic than I've come to expect being on other forums, and it's annoying sometimes but 90% of the time they do stay out of the way and let the conversation flow freely."

SansNumbers:

"No. Being a moderator on the internet is just a workload I am completely disinterested in. I'd rather have fun and good laughs on the internet than spend a whole bunch of time checking to see if people are breaking rules."

SansNumbers:

"I like the color codedness of the website and splitting off games and movies was a good idea to help people find what they like a bit better. The only thing I really miss from the last design was the level icons were more prominent and gave me a bit more incentive to deposit, which I haven't done in years now."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You make music and also had some audio submissions on Newgrounds in the past. When did you start making music and which music programs do you use? Could you imagine releasing your stuff on Newgrounds (again) in the future?

SansNumbers:

"I started making music a couple of years ago because I wanted to reach a point where I could make the type of music I enjoyed listening to. I wasn't able to reach that goal, so I just deleted the two submissions I had and whatever other music I published on the internet. Over time, as I've found out more about how the composition process works throughout many genres, especially seeing how musicians manipulate older songs to create something completely new, I've also been interested in gaining the skills to create music from samples and stuff. Only when I start doing that will I start releasing music here. Right now, to make music I just use FL Studio and Little Sound DJ."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Queen is one of your favourite rock bands. Which song and which album do you like the most?

SansNumbers:

"Innuendo, and Innuendo. There are loads of great songs on the album, it just seems like the whole thing is Freddie Mercury's epic farewell. The song is like a less comical Bohemian Rhapsody and the acoustic part especially is pretty good, even if it's not quite on the level of guitarists like Rodrigo y Gabriela."

Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule is one of your favourite tv shows. Tell my readers what the show is all about and why you like it.

SansNumbers:

"The show is a Tim and Eric spin-off about Dr. Steve Brule who discovers the world in one of the funniest things I have ever seen and the greatest show on television. The amateur-style technical issues all over the show are what really make it so great."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You play The Binding of Isaac sometimes. What aspects of this game do you like the most? Which one is your favourite character? Are you looking forward to the Binding of Isaac: Rebirth?

SansNumbers:

"The whole randomized aspect that makes you only have a vague idea of what to expect in every playthrough, the short runtime, and the fair-but-insane difficulty is what has me hooked on this game, not to mention the whole juxtaposition of cutesy art with horrifying monsters and (literal) shit. I pick a random character every time to make the run more interesting from the start but I prefer Cain because he's fast and you don't get pills with bad effects. Rebirth is just bound to make the game a lot more awesome and ball-bustingly hard, so I'm looking forward to it."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

SansNumbers:

IRL I'm very shy and reserved around strangers, which is probably true of many of the most outspoken folks on the internet."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, SansNumbers?

SansNumbers:

"Audio submissions and incorrect, naive assumptions on life and how the world works."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
