In the past you submitted many video game inspired audio tracks to Newgrounds. Do you think that you will start doing music for the Newgrounds audio portal again?

DrClay:

"Things have really been going slow for me because I haven’t really had a lot of ideas lately. Sometimes I will find myself working on a small project only to lose interest or ideas during the middle or even just a few minutes after getting a small song started. The same goes for animation and just about everything else. I do hope to make a new start someday. At the moment things are a little crazy with my personal life and well sometimes I have to sacrifice time towards something a little more important. Sometimes it takes me a while to even get a song started. I’m not sure if I am having a hard time writing music or if I am just lazy. But you know what they say, slow and steady wins the race. I went for a while without making music before and suddenly I was inspired to make one of my most popular songs “8 Bit Boss Fight.”

What video game soundtrack is your favourite of all time?

DrClay:

"I would think that I have far too many to count. Back in the day I used to use software to download music just so I can download video game music. But I’ll try to name what I can….

One of my favorite songs will always be Donkey Kong Country’s Aquatic Ambiance. You can’t picture any other level with this song, and with that it is a powerful piece of music. Not to mention that this song was created with limitations of what the SNES could do. If this was made in modern times it might not of been as powerful. I love the song not only for how it sounds but for how they were able to pull this off with what limitations they had to deal with.

Another song I absolutely love is the Killer Instinct Theme Song, mainly the Arcade. It’s like the Mortal Kombat Remix song, it just gets your blood pumping and ready for an intense fight.

There is also the Ice Cap Song in Sonic, Battlefield 1942’s theme, Mario Party 3’s Chilly Water’s (its so christmasy :3) and The Stone Tower song in Majora’s Mask.

I have a lot more but I there’s far too many to list.
Those are ones that have always been my most favorite though.

Oh and SA2B’s City Escape and Kirby’s Fountain Of Dream’s remix’s (Mainly the SSBM remix, and the SSB64 song). See like I said, far too many to remember and list."

You are one of the most active members of the Newgrounds User Icon makers. What tips can you give aspiring new members?

DrClay:

"Other than using a decent art design program there really isn’t a lot of tips to give. Making a user icon usually is just filling out a request or posting one that you feel might be interesting.
If a user doesn’t use the icon you made don’t take it as an insult. And always keep at it.
If you wanna give it a shot then go ahead, you got nothing to lose."

* Shortly after the interview the Club was once again deleted due the topic creator getting his/her posts deleted. It has been recreated by me some time after that  *

What was your reaction when the initial icon makers thread got deleted due to the deletion of the topic creator?

DrClay:

"I didn’t know about the thread’s deletion until a newer thread was made. If I knew of it when it happened, I would probably would of made the new thread. I was really bummed out when I found out about it though. I felt like all of the contributions that everyone made to the club was erased. Me and a lot of other talented users made a lot of great icons and they were all gone. Cyberdevil did provide us with a library of all the original icons and like you pointed out, there is a new thread for the club. But I feel like things have really slowed down ever since the original thread was deleted."

Doctor Who is one of your favourite tv series. Tell my readers what you like about the series.

DrClay:

"What I like about the series is that every episode is different. You can have a nice little western episode, A Town Called Mercy, and then another one might be taking place in the US during the great depression, Daleks in Manhatten. It’s not like a normal television show where all the episodes have a similar setting. With that I feel it gives the writers a lot of freedom to do what they want while maintaining a decent story. You aren’t required to have a large suspension of disbelief because it practically has no rules, you don’t have to believe in aliens or anything for it to be more entertaining. I also love the writing of “most” episodes and I think they tell a really nice story. Most episodes are almost like watching an actual movie.

Only problem is that recently they seem to be taking the term “no rules” a bit too seriously… The Doctors Sonic Screwdriver is practically just a magic wand that can fix anything… Like a get out of jail free card.

I also wish that BBC America would air more episodes then just the 2 most recent series…."

Who is your favourite doctor?

DrClay:

"I can’t really say because it wouldn’t be fair to declare who my favorite doctor is without allowing myself to of seen all of them in action. I will however provide you with who my favorite doctor is so far. That would be the tenth doctor, played by David Tennant. You don’t just see an alien with a time machine, you see the guilt of losing so much in his life. Losing companions and even his race along with many others.

I love his style and how he dresses in the blue suit and trench coat. He’s also not someone to let anyone stand in his way, if anyone was to threaten him or anyone who he cared for he stood up against them, even if it meant taking the lives of those who threaten him which is usually not something he wants to resort to. He’s like a cop, he doesn’t want to take a life. But if he has to, he will. He is how I would picture the doctor, a creature who has lost so much but still standing up for others so they don’t lose anything themselves.

Matt Smith is sort of my second favorite. When he started out he seemed really well developed and I felt he was really entertaining. I liked him about as much as I did Tennant. He was more of a laid back version of the 10th doctor. Like the 10th doctor, he doesn’t let anyone push him around. There are a lot of memorable moments of him being a real badass and awesome. But unfortunately I feel like he got really toned down in the later series, which is why he is my second favorite. I don’t necessarily blame the actor though, I just feel that sometimes there was too much characters or plot for one episode.

I’ve also seen the 9th doctor but I haven’t really seen a lot of him. I think he’s alright but he just isn’t really my favorite one."

Which episode is your favourite?

DrClay:

"First of all before I get into this I just want to say that there are going to be some spoilers here so if you want to avoid that then don’t read. One of my favorite episodes is A Town Called Mercy because it mixes everything I love about Western’s and Doctor Who. You don’t really need a large suspension of disbelief for this one either, it really does a great job with making the situation seem so real. Eventually you find out that there isn’t really any villain in this episode. It has more of an anti-hero feel. It’s a really nice paced episode that doesn’t go to quickly or to slowly. Some Fans have argued that they find the episode boring but I never have, and I don’t really see why they would…
A Town Called Mercy is also one of the episodes where I feel Matt was a great doctor. Again, I haven’t seen the entire series so I am unable to give an opinion. A lot of old school fans say tome of the cyberman is a great one. I haven’t seen it and I don’t feel I can give a proper opinion on it without seeing it."

Which actor would you like to be casted as doctor in the future?

DrClay:

"I honestly wouldn’t know, I’m not really a British Television watcher so I’m not really familiar with British actors. Even if it was an American actor I wouldn’t know. It might sound strange but I’m not really someone who knows a lot of decent actors. An actor that I could name off the top of my head would be someone like Jim Carrey, and he would be a TERRIBLE doctor…."

Your childhood is when you first got in contact with both the Mario and Sonic games. Which are your respective favourite games?

DrClay:

"Well it’s funny because I had the rare privilege of playing both Mario and Sonic as a kid. When I was born my family had an NES. We only had three games for it. The Super Mario Brothers Duckhunt and Stadium Events cartridge, Bill Eliots Nascar Challenge and the first of the TMNT games. It wasn’t a lot but it was 1992. Not really a time to find NES games at your local video game store.

Those are basically what we played for a while until my brother got a Sega Genesis. First game I played on the Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog. I still would play the nes every now and then, eventually the nes broke though so all I had was a Sega Genesis. I liked it, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles is still one of my most favorite gems. I was like 4 years old when we got it so I don’t really remember much about the day we first got it. Only that it was difficult to hook up.
I also was a fan of Mortal Kombat 3, as well as Ultimate Mortal Kombat. I would always kick my brothers ass in it. If I was ever in a Mortal Kombat Tournament I would use a Sega Genesis controller. (The X Y Z one of course) Favorite Characters: Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke, Sub-Zero and Scorpion.

Looking back I don’t think it has aged well. In most experiences people tend to find ways to perform combos in the game that are very long or infinite. They are practically exploiting and if you happen to have an opponent who does this, you pretty much are going to lose.

Killer Instinct is my all-time favorite fighting game.
I think everyone should play this game at least once in their life, it is just amazing.
You haven’t lived unless you’ve played this game.
I also favor all the classic Rare games on the N64 like Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo Kazooie and Tooie."

How well have both franchises developed in your opinion?

DrClay:

Sega was my favorite company. This was a company that was taking on Nintendo, one of the most famous video game companies and back then there wasn’t Sony or Microsoft so Nintendo and Sega were the only competitors in the console wars. I loved Sega because they really went above and beyond with what they had. Unfortunately they also made a lot of mistakes in the last days of the Genesis. With the failure of both the 32x and Sega CD, a lot of third party companies didn’t want to produce for Sega anymore.

Also with the Sega Dreamcast you’d think that Sega would have been able to stick around. But Sony made the PS2 and thus Sega was eliminated from the console wars. Sony basically is who killed Sega.
It’s a shame because I always felt that Sega was ahead of their time. A lot of people will say that the SNES is better than the Genesis and I do agree. But you are comparing a system that was made to compete with the NES with the SNES. Sega made the Genesis 2 years before the SNES so of course the SNES is going to be superior, the technology was better when the SNES was made.

And the Dreamcast is a console still worshiped today.
Not to mention all the classic games made by Sega that are practically legends.
Crazy Taxi, Earthworm Jim, Gunstar Heros, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and many others.
Looking at Sega now it’s sort of depressing. Ever since they stopped being an independent company with its own console they haven’t really been the same.

Sure they still make third party games and all but sometimes I like to kick back and play some Crazy Taxi and remember the good times. I grew up with a Genesis and sort of upsetting to know that you won’t get to play a new Sega Console.

Nintendo seems to be going to the same route, I don’t think the Wii-U is going to be a good console.
Sure the graphics and everything look nice but I don’t really see a lot of games that were really made for the system itself, and I’m starting to think that in a few years Nintendo might not be around anymore. I hope that doesn’t happen."

Team Fortress 2 is one your favourite games. When did you start playing it and what changes to it did you like and dislike?

DrClay:

"If I remember correctly, I started playing it around late 2009. I think I actually started playing around before the hats were such a big thing, as well as the weapons. If you play the game now, it would look far more different then it was. Every player has accessories and whatnot. It’s basically becoming TF2 Dress Up and quite frankly I don’t like it. Yeah having different hats and everything is cute and all but I think it’s starting to become overkill. So I suppose that is one change I can say I’m starting to dislike.

I do like how they decided to be more open to the community and welcome new maps and things that people have made for the game. It’s a good way to show the younger audience how to design content for video games."

When did you start your own Team Fortress Newgrounds server and what are some of the funniest experiences that you had there?

DrClay:

"I started the server around 2012. There really haven’t been a lot of experiences on it unfortunately. Most of the time, the server is empty. Sorry there isn’t much to say for this one. Occasionally I would have Toad and LiquidFire drop by, but we all have different time zones and it’s sometimes very difficult to arrange a meet up. Back when the server was made for Man Versus Machine, a different gameplay type that only required 6 players or less, it was a lot more active. I keep wanting to close it but at the same time I keep hoping that some players will start hang around on it."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

DrClay:

"Sometimes in my spare time, I like to just randomly do silly voices and practice in voice acting. I could be driving to work or perhaps just chilling at my computer and I’ll just start talking in a random type of character’s voice. I can do a decent Duke Nukem voice but it takes a lot of effort. It’s nothing really major. It’s just something I’m doing as a way of practicing for voice work. Someday I do want to try out for voice acting, and I feel this is a good way to keep practicing."

What can we expect from you in the future, DrClay?

DrClay:

"At the moment I don’t really know.
There are so many things that I would like to try to do, to do, and to get back to doing.
I’ve been toying around with programming and also with 3D Modeling/Animation.
I’m hoping someday to use that knowledge for projects I plan on submitting.
I also would like to try out voice acting as well. The idea of doing work for a project and seeing how someone would use that content has always been an excitement to me and I would love to try it for voicing.
But most of this is for another day.
I think for now I will just take one day at a time and do what I can."
