Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user T3XT.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username T3XT?

T3XT:

"Newgrounds goes way back. I found it browsing the web for games in.... 2008?.... although I can't really say I frequented it back then. A couple years later, though, I discovered the Doom Triple Pack flash game on here. That really got me into this site; I made Newgrounds a part of my regular internet tours from then on. I lurked on here playing games until January 2012, when I actually decided to make an account. I'm one of those weird people that goes straight to the forums when they sign up for a site, so I did just that. It took me a while but I found a niche within the community and decided I was here to stay."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

T3XT:

"Definitely. The past year or so has been particularly crazy for me in general, both in real life and on the forums. As far as the forums, I can gladly say that my posts have gradually improved over time, as is often the case with new users. I've made a few friends here as well (You're awesome, Otto!) and become a part of the community. I also make regular trips to the Art portal to admire the work; some of the artists there never cease to impress. Speaking of artists, I'm also an artist myself, although I haven't drawn anything I consider upload-worthy yet, lol. In real life, I've been battling through a lot of things, mostly personal issues that I won't say here. Suffice to say, the things I've encountered in real life really changed me as a person, and that is reflected in my forum posts. I'm not as upward-looking as I used to be, heh. On the brighter side of things, I've also explored different kinds of financial investments via buying and selling precious metals, namely silver and palladium. More on that to come."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

T3XT:

"There are certain popular animators that I like on here, particularly psychicpebble, Oney, Stamper, Egoraptor, and SpeedoSausage. And while I'm at it, I truly miss Edd Gould.

As far as people I've actually talked to, the aforementioned Otto is an awesome user, one of my favorites on the forums. Some of my favorite posters are Cootie, yurgenburgen, Sense-Offender, Painbringer, Dr-Worm, and Luis, to name a few. I always keep an eye out for their posts when I'm on here."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

T3XT:

"Hmm...There are some posters I'm not very fond of, but I don't want to list them out here. That just feels like some kind of declaration of war, and I don't really want to invite that. I like to be on okay terms with everybody, even people I don't like, so I don't end up butting heads with someone when I use the forums."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

T3XT:

"I could be cynical about the forums and judge them by a minority of bad users, but truth be told, I think the community here is generally pretty good. I definitely spend most of my time on General, though occasionally I pop into Video Games too. (I really wish that place was more active.) The users I mentioned earlier I think would all make for good interviews."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

T3XT:

"They're a mixed bag. I think most of the regulars are pretty good, namely EJR, Zachary, and Murray (formerly Bahamut). On the worst side of the spectrum, there's that one that everybody hates. You know who it is."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

T3XT:

"Hmm, I never really thought about that. Yes, I think being a mod would be pretty awesome. Probably a forum mod since the majority of my time goes there."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The redesign happened last year. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

T3XT:

"I like the inclusion of the chat, that's a plus. On the downside, I really, reallly, really miss the old level icons. I'd give anything to have those back. I also miss having a larger sig space. Most of the other changes I'm indifferent to."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

T3XT:

"I have major seasonal depression. I suppose that's something I haven't confessed before. It gets particularly bad around this time of year; wish me luck."

What can we expect from you in the future, T3XT?

T3XT:

"Remember earlier when I said none of my pictures were upload-worthy? Well, I lied. There's a couple pictures of mine that are coming along quite nicely, the best of which I'll release on Pico Day. Also, I recently got Flash!"

Nice to hear Doom Triple Pack has made such a great impact on at least one person, that was an awesome game (at least the Doom part, obviously). Good interview!

Thanks!
Surprisingly, I never played any of the Doom games. I grew up with a Sega Genesis and the first major PC game I can recall playing is Morrowind, which I think was a nice start - and downloading mods with a 52k modem was quite the experience ^^

Shamefully I missed out on both the Genesis and mod downloads on dial-up. I've played a few Sega games later on (like House of the Dead), but none of the classics, or classic consoles, not Nintendo's either. Games like Oregon Trail, Sim Ant, Donkey Kong are what I grew up on, then I found my way to FPS games like Marathon and Quake, and finally... Doom! It sticks.

I see. As you can imagine Morrowind led me in a different path, RPG games. Gothic 1 and 2 (3 and onward are highly disappointing and unplayable due to bugs), the Elderscrolls Series and Action RPG games like Diablo 1 and 2.
The only FPS game I ever played is Bioshock - which is an own entity though and one of the most impressive games I ever played.

I've missed out on Bioschock too! Need to play that sometime. Of the games you mentioned so far, the only one I've played was Diablo 2, but that one was a lot of fun. Tried getting it to work on my 'new' computer, but even with all available patches/fixes applied there are too many comparability issues in 64-bit systems. Have you tried Breath of Fire and Golden Sun?

I indeed played Golden Sun, the two titles for the GBA and the one for the DS and I liked all of them. I wanted to try out Breath of Fire but I haven't done so yet - I still have some RPG games for my DS that I haven't played through, including Suikoden Tierkreis.
As for Diablo 2 not working - I can recommend Titan Quest Gold edition, it is from 2006 but it is almost as good as Diablo 2 . some things are even better in my opinion. It's definitely worth playing through although it has pretty much no story ^^

Titan Quest Gold does seem like fun, might try it! Not sure if Diablo 2 had much story either, maybe you remember? I've played through both Golden 1 & 2, but I haven't tried the DS version yet. The first ones were surprisingly good, and long, I didn't think that much could fit on a GBA cartridge! I tried the Breath of Fire on PSX, but not so much, first impressions were good though. The best games I know are a bit of a mixture between FPS and RPG, like Oni.

Well, Diablo 2 had in my opinion a good story. It wasn't forced upon you, you could get background information by talking with the people in town but didn't have to - the cinematics were and still are one of the best. Sadly the story in Diablo 3 is both predictable and cheesy - generally Diablo 3 is not a game that I would recommend atleast not until it costs 10 Dollar ^^
I think that you will be visually impressed by the DS Golden Sun but I found it a bit less good than the GBA titles - but it's still worth getting and enjoyable.
If you like a combination of FPS and RPG, then maybe Borderlands is something for you, it goes more in the direction of an FPS Action RPG though.

Good to know. Borderlands does look good, but probably not something that'd fit in my favorites. Forgot to mention games like GTA and Resident Evil btw, I guess those could be considered hybrids of FPS/RPG too, they're a couple of franchises I've really become hooked on. :) I guess you haven't tried Oni btw? It's a pretty unique game in how it mixes hand-to-hand combat with weapons, occasional puzzles, and a storyline that really sucks you in. Great voice acting too. The graphics are a bit outdated, but the voicing is something else. I haven't found anything like it.

Just recently ordered a new computer btw, so I'll finally be able to try some newer games. It's got an 8-core 3,1Ghz processor, 8GB RAM (32 max), Radeon GPU with 1GB memory... compared to my current computer it'll be like jumping into a different dimension. :)

About Golden Sun DS, could you play it with buttons only or did it require the stylus for some things? I get a bit annoyed with games that don't give you the option of playing either with or without. Oh, have you tried Advance Wars?

I like GTA! My favourite is San Andreas. never played GTA IV since I don't like that you have to make tons of accounts just to play it. I think GTA V will be good though, as I heard many didn't like GTA IV since it left out stuff like mini games and free roaming or atleast limited it.
As for Resident Evil, I don't usally play scary games - I don't even dare to play Slender - but I watch Let's Plays of such games. If you like Slender, then there is a game called Dream of the Blood Moon which is heavily influenced by japanese culture - it's pretty cool but I only played it for a bit as I am scared by the grudge like woman :o

That computer sounds good..... I didn't know that there were already 8 cores ^^

You can play Golden Sun DS without stylus and I did so for the most part. Holding a heavy DSiXL and the stylus for some time can become stressful :D

Ah, GTA SA is a favorite of mine too! I spent way too much time playing that game, and seeing as GTA 5 will feature the San Andreas area again I'm really looking forward to it! My current computer can't handle GTA 4 so I'll be trying that one soon, I hope, I've had it for a couple of years but not been able to play. :) The computer did seem good, I can't wait to try it out! There are computers with more than 8 cores btw, I think it's up at 12 now.

The Resident Evil series isn't that scary, at least not the newer games. It has some suspense and violence, but not really that 'supernatural' thing most scary games have. It's more of an action game now.

Good to know. :)

12 cores ... with that I can play Solitaire with 60 FPS, finally :o
I had Skyrim for some time bought on Steam but no computer to run it even on minimum, and then I could play it with a bunch of high texture mods ^^

Hm.... I think I mixed Silent Hill and Resident Evil up.... they are indeed not similiar anymore :)
