Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user SaltshakerClock.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username SaltshakerClock?

SaltshakerClock:

"I first encountered Newgrounds in early 2007. I used to go on AddictingGames all the time, and would often see the Newgrounds logo on games that were hosted there. In April, I decided to check it out, since i was really into Madness Combat at the time, and has realized that there was quite a bit of Madness stuff here. In particular, I remember watching a flash on the front page about a MC character shooting up a school, and it was around the time of V-tech. In May I started coming here almost everyday after school (at the time I was in 5th grade, imagine that!) and I began to get really interested in the Clock Crew. For the summer of 2007, I was going on Newgrounds all the time, hardly doing anything else. Even though I was underaged (I was 11 at the time) I signed up with the name "SaltshakerClock." I thought that all you had to do to get into the Clock Crew was have a Clock username on Newgrounds. Obviously, I was wrong, but I kept the name. I think I joined because I thought it was really cool how I could make news posts (this was post-redesign, and I was 11, so that sort of thing got me!). Soon after, I was making friends!"

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

SaltshakerClock:

"Oh definitely. I know for a fact that I've changed as a user, but that Newgrounds has also had a profound effect on my life. I remember when I first joined, I stuck mostly to my own userpage and my friends. As time went on, I started to go on the BBS a bit more. As this happened, I really became more aware of how the Internet functions. My early posts show a starkly different manner of speech, and topic discussion than my present day posts, if that makes any sense! While I used to be a naive little kid trying to get his name out there, now I'm just "that guy" who posts somewhat often. In real life, Newgrounds has changed as I've changed. For well over the past 5 years, Newgrounds has been in my life, from Middle School all the way to High School. Through the severe illness I had to deal with in 2010, Newgrounds has always been there. I also grew a whole foot taller in the time from when I signed up to the present day! Isn't that something?"

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

SaltshakerClock:

"Practically any regular in the Chat is a user I like, and too many on the BBS to list here. I like having friends, pals, allies, what have you. It really makes me feel as if i can bounce my opinions and conversation off as opposed to what could be a sea of unfamiliar faces and names. This is a great thing, but also a bad thing. Users leave all the time, and it's a little sad to see them go. Especially if they were a friend of mine. I've also got a few NGers added on Facebook, adding to the whole "I've got friends, wooo!" sentiment. I've also been introduced to a lot of new music by my NG friends, so that's another way they affect me I suppose. I'd love to go to a meet up someday, but for now I'm just a minor!"

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

SaltshakerClock:

"I don't have any enemies, actually. Every time I've ever been in argument, at least that I can remember, I've always resolved things with that person via PM so there are no hard feelings. There are some users I'm less fond of than others, but I can't remember any of their names. The only one that I think I actually do not like is Insanctuary. That guy bothers me! I wouldn't normally call people out, especially in something as public as in an interview, but that guy has it coming. His psuedo-philosophical bullshit is beyond intolerable. If I could internet-punch anybody, it would be him. Repeatedly. Beyond him, though, nobody comes to mind."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

SaltshakerClock:

"In my opinion, the forums are alright. I used to go on them a lot, but now I mostly stick to the Chat. I feel like the forums have too many people acting gimmicky all the time, which clouds up any chance for real discussion. That's mostly General, which is where I mostly go. However, i do like browsing the Video Games forum from time to time, but that's a little dead. I enjoy C&C despite not actually being in any clubs (I do post in some of them, occasionally, though.) But I think as time goes on, I'll stop going to the forums for greater periods of time. Then, there will be a point where I'm not there anymore, and I will strictly be a Chat dweller. When will that day come? I cannot foresee. Is there any user I'd like to recommend? Nobody comes to mind that you haven't already interviewed! So, sorry guys and gals, I've got no clue which one of you I'd like to be up here!"

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

SaltshakerClock:

"I think the moderators do a pretty good job. I mean, the forums & chat are clean 99% of the time, and run without a hitch. I think they deserve the credit for that. I don't get banned often at all on the forums, so I'm sure that affects how I view the moderators as a whole. I do occasionally talk to a few moderators in the Chat, though. Both chat & BBS mods. They all seem like pretty cool people in general, and I've got no complaints."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

SaltshakerClock:

"I wouldn't like to become a moderator, honestly. It just seems like so much work. Dealing with people breaking the rules, having all this hate towards you (as well as all the brown nosers out there. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) just seems like it would take away the fun of just hanging out on Newgrounds. If I HAD to choose though, I would pick being a chat moderator. I hang out there most of the time, and I think that is, if anything, the most easy going of all the moderator positions. Dealing with people chatting is a lot easier than dealing with forum posters, because I think the chat has a friendlier atmosphere, come to think of it."

The redesign 2012 has arrived earlier this year. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

SaltshakerClock:

"Initially, I HATED the redesign. It really bothered me, and took a while to get used to it. I missed the design of the 2007 era. However, after about a month or so, I grew to love the new redesign. I love the easy access to the forums & chat, and the user icons that we now have had made identifying users so much easier than it used to be, with sigs & levels. However, speaking of levels, I still hate the new levels. I loved the old level icons, but these new ones seem to be trying too hard to be "retro" and just end up looking like completely garbage. In my opinion, that is. I know a few people enjoy them, but it seems to me like the consensus is that they suck."

How did you experience this years Clock Day? Were you satisfied or disappointed by it?

SaltshakerClock:

"I actually forgot about Clock Day this year. A terrible Clock I am, right? As if I'm even considered one; Anyways! Yeah, I don't really know. Since I didn't participate, I can't really say much about it. I can tell you, though, that each year since my first one has been mediocre, and I'm sure people who experience Clock Days before 2007 will tell me that pre-2007 ones were better, but whatever. I'm going by my experiences, damn it!"

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

SaltshakerClock:

"Oh man, I don't know haha. I mean, most of my secrets are posted somewhere within my posts. I don't tend to keep things under wraps on NG. I like it that way though, having most of my life out there for other people to mock, criticize, praise, etc etc. So as far as things NG doesn't know, hmm. I don't think there's anything worth knowing that isn't already out there, so I'll just tell a bland secret. I have never been outside of the country, and the farthest I've been from my state (Massachusetts) is Florida, or Chicago. Whichever is further, distance-wise, from my house. Kind of boring. I'd like to go traveling internationally someday, though!"

What can we expect from you in the future, SaltshakerClock?

SaltshakerClock:

"A lot of things! I'm always working on secret projects, and not so secret projects. While they aren't directly related to Newgrounds and the Newgrounds community, I'll certainly be sharing them with anybody who will be willing to listen, once they are finished. For the time being, though, don't expect much from this user except the usual posts, chats, and whatnot. Eventually though, I'll be showing off some cool things I've made/created/done. Be prepared, Newgrounds! Here I come!"

Salts a nice person.

Yes ^^

cool guy on chat, gotta say

I agree :)

Wow, me and Salt have something in common. We was both flashless Clocks at one point!

Yay ^^

SaltshakerClock I always saw just chilling in the background. I am glad though that I wasn't the only one calling out Insanctuary on his bullshit.

He was on the chat once :x

That's my bud, glad to see he's still sticking around!

Yes :)
