Interview with The-Great-One

Posted by Asandir - November 19th, 2012

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview is a little bit different than the usal stuff. I am glad to present you an interview with the the creator of TheInterviewer, The-Great-One. In this interview, he will answers as member of TheInterviewer, as user The-Great-One and as Dohn, the person behind the username.

Questions about TheInterviewer:

TheInterviewer has interviewed many of Newgrounds greatest artists and even Tom Fulp himself. Do you think that TheInterviewer has become an important part of Newgrounds history by showing us more about Newgrounds most outstanding members?

TheInterviewer:

"No I don't think it is part of Newgrounds history. It is more of an archive of the famous artists and members of Newgrounds. Will it become a part of Newgrounds history someday? Maybe, but it's still got a long way to go for that."

In the beginning, you were the only member of TheInterviewer. Did you find it difficult in that time to keep up regular releases? Who joined you first and how did it change the way you work on the interviews?

TheInterviewer:

"At the start of The Interviewer there were no real schedule release dates. I just came across an artist or member. I check my list of suggestions and go from there, and when it was up it was up. Now I am on a schedule. Ryanson was the first to join, I invited him on and he had a different style than I did, which I not only like, but believe it to be better than mine."

For a short time, your interviews were featured in a box on the frontpage, nicely visable for many users. Did you notice that more users read your interviews in that time? Would you like to see a comeback of the featured content box?

TheInterviewer:

"The Interviewer did get more readers with that box, I would love to see it come back, because not only did it help out in getting the interviews more known, it introduced a lot of Newgrounds to some newer games and movies. It was pretty great."

One thing that I noticed is that we often have a one-dimensional view of other users and that interviews help to get a glance of the person behind the username. Can you recall one user where you experienced this?

TheInterviewer:

"Every user I tend to find out something new about them, to go behind the username. An example of this would have to be AlmightyHans. On the site he seems very chipper with nothing that really effects him, but he has had troubles in his past and to read his work on The Ballad of CrippleKane was not only a bit sad, but inspirational at the same time."

Questions about The-Great-One:

You were voted as best poster for the NG mid-years awards 2012. How did you feel winning this award?

The-Great-One:

"Didn't know the thread would be gone, the flash still stands though. It was a shock that I won Best Poster, because I also won Master Creator. I think of myself as a decent poster, however I barely made any threads so how I got Master Creator I'm not sure. The Mid-Year Awards I don't care for, but it is all in good fun. It's the General Forum Awards... so that should tell you all you need to know about that. Still General forum is a stupid fun place to be."

The Underground is a series of threads that you created about video games. Tell me one discussion that you especially liked.

The-Great-One:

"It is got to be My Shiny Trophy Has Been Spiked. We do need better quality awards shows for video games so we can honor and respect those who put their heart in soul into the video games that they make. We do have some great video game awards shows, but they're not given the attention that they deserve."

Some people say that video games have changed from high-quality games with nice gameplay to soul-less massproducts with nothing but fancy graphics. Do you share this point of view? Did you experience a change in video games?

The-Great-One:

"I do not share that point of view, because it is pretty shallow to say the least. Some franchises have turned to this, because the fans of those franchises have turned them from art to supply and demand and the developers don't want to branch out to other factors. There has always been a change in video games, it is a growing art form. Super Mario Galaxy changed the landscape for Mario, Bioshock brought us something entirely new, Resident Evil 4 was amazing, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare hit a lot of us pretty hard in what could be done with an army game. There is a mainstream shovelware aspect present, but it's not as big as a lot of people are making it out to be."

You have reviewed a fair amount of Newgrounds flashes. Which flash is the most outstanding that you have seen and reviewed?

The-Great-One:

"Well I have a list of movies and games that I consider perfect, it's called the Masterful List. I used my review terms to review each one and in my eyes these are perfect. However at the time of this interview the best movie I have reviewed has been Redhand. Just seeing all of these different Newgrounds members come together to make this epic stick figure movie is just brilliant. From beginning to end I enjoyed every bit of it and was just astounded at the amount of work it must have taken to bring this together."

Questions about Dohn:

You were raised as christian, today you consider yourself an atheist. I would like to know how this happened and how it changed your view on life.

Dohn: "At one point in my life I was doing inhalants because it was a cheap way to get high and I almost committed suicide. I turned my life over to Christianity. As I got older though I was really starting to question myself as well as others around me and I was having suicidal thoughts again, I was wondering why God wasn't answering me. It was then I started to think about my life more and more and realized that nobody was listening to me, nobody was there, it was just me... that was when I became agnostic. I started to look more into my religion and decided to look at what the other side was saying since it was always kept out of my household. I decided to look into evolution and read the bible some more. As scientists kept testing its theory of evolution and kept studying it, they came closer and closer to it being fact with better technology and more information. The bible still just stood there with nothing but men and women trying to force it onto people with really nothing to back itself up with. The bible contradicted itself on many different levels and doesn't stay consistent. It is a 2,000 year old book that doesn't stand up today. As I looked more and more into my religion I found that I just couldn't believe a lot of it on faith alone and that is when I became an atheist."

On February 5th 2012, you came out as an open bisexual. How did the people close to you react to it? How did you experience the time where you felt the need to keep it as secret?

Dohn:

"I came out here on Newgrounds first to some of my closer friends and they were okay with it, very supportive. Then I came out in the Gay/Bi Club and MLP Crew here on Newgrounds and both were supportive as well. It felt good. Then I came out to my brother and one of my closest friends and they were accepting of it. My brother had a feeling and my closest friends found it a bit surprising. I still have to keep it a secret from my family and some people around me, because I am from South Carolina, within the bible belt. My family are not very accepting of atheists, homosexuals, and black people, so it can be a bit of trouble. My father especially, it gets scary when I hear him saying we should beat atheists and gays or run them out of this country."

Breast Cancer awareness month is approaching. You actively promoted it in the past and I guess you will do you this year too. May I ask you if there was a case of cancer in your family?

Dohn:

"Yeah I am going to re-write the article for this year. I have had family members who have died of cancer, I don't think any of them have died due to breast cancer. Cancer is still cancer though no matter how you look at it, so I am thinking of broadening my article for this year that way it can be more year round."

Lastly I want to know, what can we expect from you in the future, as member of TheInterviewer, The-Great-One and Dohn.

Dohn:

"From The Interviewer, more interviews. From Dohn, more educational information and other forms of interviews through Somber Pensive. From myself, well I would like to get back to creative writing or directing if an animator would like to pick me up. I am looking to do some things on YouTube in the future though."

And so you got to know a more personal side about The-Great-One. We should never forget that there is always a real person behind a username. Feel free to leave a comment here, saying what you think about the interview, requesting users to get interviews is also appreciated. Tune in next week :3

I think you forgot the question "What's Dohn?"

Yes I did :o

FIRST!

Dohn? With an H?
I can't say I'm atheist but I don't very well believe in God and I do miss the content box that was on the front page.

I liked the box too :)
