Interview with egg82

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user egg82.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username egg82?

egg82:

"I found NG around '06 I think. I'm not actually sure why I joined, I think it was because of the comment or rating system at which point game benefits to getting XP and levels in the form of hidden games and the like. Either way, I eventually left that altogether to help out in the forums, by which I mean I spout random crap in the Flash Reg Lounge and occasionally visit other threads in Flash or Programming to give some assistance.

egg82 came from ye olde Runescape days (I suppose Classic Runescape as it's called now) - it was my first online username and I was hungry. I chose "egg" which of course was taken, and was instead given the suggestion "egg82"
I figured I'd probably never use the name again, so why not?

Shows how much I know."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

egg82:

"I'd hope so after more than 8 years have passed. Now I feel old.
As far as my life goes, I've gone from your average 13-year-old to having and holding a job, a house, a girlfriend, and a car. I think I'm doing alright.
In terms of programming, I've gone from a shitty AS2 timeline coder to knowing and simultaneously programming in multiple Object-Oriented languages, sometimes making them work together. I don't pretend to be the best, but my god I've grown from where I started at a single button that said "Hello!""

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

egg82:

"I'd say most of the Reg Lounge. Fun group to chill and talk with. We help eachother out and such.
I've bounced ideas back and forth between a lot of them and it's helped quite a lot with pushing the boundaries of some languages and discovering and implementing cool new ideas. Did you know you can make a self-installing white screen that you can't get out of without shutting your computer down using just Adobe AIR? Neither did I, but a couple of us managed it together."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

egg82:

"Not really. A lot of people think MintPaw and I hate eachother, but really we just like to screw with eachother on the odd occasion. No ill-feelings there."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

egg82:

"Three questions in one, I thought that was something people thought of to get around the "one wish" thing for genies?
I love the forums, I just would like to see them more active than they are. I like the little group I hang out with and all, but I feel like if there was more genuinely good programmers in the forums and less "What does this error code mean?" threads everything would be awesome. Seriously, people; google it.

I get way too frustrated at the lack of trying on the new threads. Probably the reason I don't do those any more. Everybody wants you to write their code for them all the time. Teach a man to fish, I can't catch the entire ocean for you."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

egg82:

"They seem to do what they're supposed to. I've never been banned (I don't think) - but I've also (mostly) followed the rules here. Really not that hard; just don't be an ass and everything's fine."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

egg82:

"I dunno, really. Being a mod would be cool and all, but the question really is what would I do with it? I suppose I wouldn't mind if I was offered a position, but at the same time I'm not about to go on a tantrum if I never become one.
As for what kind of moderator, it would probably for the best if I were a forum mod or a portal mod. Despite my level I do on occasion go and vote on portal submissions. I just do less than five per day so it never counts."

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign.

egg82:

"I barely remember that re-design any more. It seems like each re-design makes things just a little better all-around. I don't agree with every little thing that's changed, but on the whole it looks and works a bit better. I do miss name changes, even though I never used that feature. I do remember the original NG layout and all the exploits I discovered it had. For example, being able to read submission comments before the submission was out of judgement was really helpful."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

egg82:

"This was a bigger re-design than the first one from what I can remember. NG has changed, for sure. Something I didn't mention before was the API they released, which is pretty fantastic and useful."

Back in 2008, you submitted your last flash vader funny to the Newgrounds portal. Have you tried animating since then? Since the end of the year is close, which Newgrounds animations of 2014 impressed you?

egg82:

"Oh, god, don't remind me. That was a complete half-assed failure I created with my friend in about an hours one day because we were bored kids. I would remove half the stuff I submitted, but I saw Tom's point of view when NG put the feature in and decided against it.
I'm an absolutely atrocious artist and animator; to answer the question, no I will not try animating ever again."

Judging from your Youtube channel, it seems that you like to play Minecraft. Tell my readers when your first played Minecraft and which aspects of it you like the most.

egg82:

"MintPaw showed me Minecraft for the first time and I loved it for about a week before I figured out it was quite boring after you got diamond gear. He showed me modded Minecraft shortly after and I fell in love with the game since then. I can never go back to vanilla, but I keep finding new and interesting things every time I play modded which is absolutely fantastic.
I've tried my hand at creating a mod or two myself which have been mildly successful but never released.

That doesn't mean I don't enjoy other games, however. On the contrary, Minecraft counts for a very, very small portion of my time spent gaming. I like RPGs which can take weeks to complete. For example, I JUST completed Dragon Age:Inquisition about an hour ago and have put 57 hours into it since its release."

I know it's a wild guess but I have a feeling that you are a huge fan of Super Mario. What was the first Mario game that you played? Which Mario games of the last 5 years are your favourites?

egg82:

"Not a huge fan, no. I loved Super Mario World and that's pretty much it. I occasionally go back and play it for an hour or two, but that's fairly rare. There's more modern games that require my attention any more. As for Mario games in the last 5 years, I don't really have any. Again, just liked the one game.
The reason for my profile image is because an egg would just be too much. Talking to Mario is way cooler anyway."

It seems that you have a fair bit of knowledge about programming. Which programming languages did you learn and how would you rank them in difficulty? Looking back, what was the most difficult project that you successfully programmed?

egg82:

"Lowest to highest:
AS3
HTML (If you count that)
Java
Javascript
C#
PHP (proper OOP PHP using MVC)
CSS (I suck at design, did I mention that?)
C++
C

fuck C, man.
The most difficult thing I've accomplished so far has been a project I haven't fully completed. Kinda. I started it and re-started it and if I mashed all of those projects together I'd have a full game, but for now it's a bunch of pieces just laying around the floor like a puzzle. Like a massive 3D puzzle as large as the Empire State Building. I'm still working on putting it all together.
If you're curious, the project is a top-down multiplayer RPG with a graphic style similar to Secret of Mana in which the owner of the server creates the entire world. This is done in AIR. I'm aware it's very ambitious and may never see the light of day, but I've been going back to it every so often over the last year and have gotten a good portion of it done."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

egg82:

"I shit my pants until I was like 13 because I was too lazy to go to the bathroom.
I have had problems saving money for the last four or so years (when I started making it) - I make plenty to live, but I can't save a penny.
I eat anything and everything and still manage to weigh 145 at 6'1" - I have no idea how
I used to have a lot of issues talking to girls and was the kid everyone picked on until near the end of high-scool.
My dad died when I was 18 and left me $1400, which at that point was more money than I'd ever seen. I spent it all the weekend following on hookah and weed.
Speaking of weed, I used to smoke but don't any more save for the rare occasion. Drinking as well.

I have loads of skeletons in my closet. Take your pick, really."

What can we expect from you in the future, egg82?

egg82:

"Probably the same as it's been the last couple years. I have a life, but NG seems to be a small part of that life. I'm not sure how that happened, but here I am and here I'll stay for at least the foreseeable future.
Who knows, I might even release that game I've been working on and put a trimmed-down version on NG (since AIR apps need to install and can't be run on the web)

We'll see."
