Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Heretic-Anchorite.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I found Newgrounds back in 2003-2004, I was about 11 at that time. One friend had shown me a bunch of submissions like Kermit Kombat and Bob the Ball. I really enjoyed those animations, between the comedy and the unnecessary exaggerated violence, it was gold to my 11 year old self. After he had shown me these, later at home I decided to check this place out for myself, I watched many sprite movies, Mario, and Zelda related stuff (like this), I played a bunch of games (like this), and I eventually found the adult section and played games and things like this. I really enjoyed the adult section along with everything else, so I decided to make an account here."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I would say that I have changed a lot in real life, and that changed me here as a user. Obviously since I joined this site as a young, immature 12 year old, I'm going to change naturally due to age. Personally whenever I see my old posts, I have a hard time believing how utterly retarded I was. I take some solace in the fact that those posts were worse than anything I did in real life, but I still dread my early posts. In real life I was never that stupid, or annoying. I was pretty quiet and independent. I would always feel guilty if I ever put any sort of burden on anyone, especially my parents. I would do my best to help my parents, but on Newgrounds I was sort of free from all that. In those early posts I really just blindly shared, and as a dumb 12 year old, what I shared was either stupid or misinformed. I have changed a lot since then, but I also have changed a lot in the past few years due to a particular event. I feel all these have shown in my posts here."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I wouldn't say many users on here affect me a lot, mostly because I really don't know anyone on here, but there are a few users who I enjoy seeing around and I like reading their post. @FinaLee is one, I really enjoy his sense of optimism, and he seems like a pretty cool person. I also share his interest in fitness. Another would be @yurgenburgen, he really knows how to construct, and deconstruct arguments, he is a pretty smart person, and I tend to agree with him. Also, since I was strongly influenced by the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, I love seeing him quote and reference him every once and a while. There are many other users on here that are cool and interesting in some way, but those are two I can name right off the bat."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"Not at all really. I know that sometimes there is a lot of drama here of the forums, but personally I think if something gets to that point, you are getting too involved and maybe should take a step back. This is less about Newgrounds, and more the internet in general. I've always tried to participate in discussions while not getting swept up in the moment, or posting in ways that I will regret. This sort of reflects me in real life, Although there are things I dislike and things I hate, I would rather keep it to myself and act with reason, I am rarely impulsive and almost always calm."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I absolutely love the BBS. It was always a relatively unique place on the web, this can stem from it being a creative media/art type of place and the fact that it is owned and ran my people like Tom and the staff rather than some massive, soulless conglomerate. Although the BBS has gone very quiet and died down a lot in recent times, I can't help but always come back here, or wonder what is going on here. I'll never leave this place. As far as specific Forums I prefer, I mainly post in General, a few clubs in C&C, and sometimes the Video Game Forum. I lurk Politics once and a while, but I'd rather stay out of what takes place there. I really don't know of any user I would recommend interviewing, I really don’t know much users."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"They all suck! jk, I never really had a problem with the mods. I haven't been banned in a while, and every time I was banned, I deserved it. I don't really talk to any of the mods, but they seem alright. They can be much worse and be outright authoritative dicks who just not give a shit like I've seen on other sites, but other than that I don't really have much of an opinion on them."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I wouldn't mind it. I couldn't see myself doing anything beyond a BBS mod though, since I am mostly active on the forum. I would try to be laid back and not use my powers unless I need to. I would rather avoid the drama and just watch over things, help people out, and work unseen. I would feel honored that the staff entrusted me with power and I would try to use it as responsibly as possible."

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign.

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I always saw Newgrounds as an interesting, and unique place, this can be reflected by its design. Most sites on the web just use a forum code generator of some sort, and although these scripts are functional, they are almost always bland, and tasteless. Newgrounds uses its own design, giving off a sense of character; that this is a place you want to be a part of. Newgrounds also uses a portal with a voting, review, and blam and protect system, these all give a vibe of a certain commitment to your work, unlike certain places where people mostly say and do anything without even caring or thinking about it."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"The last one really changed Newgrounds. I'm really no expert in web design of any sort, but I do feel the changes have generally added more features, improved existing features, and made the site more functional. I do miss the old black and gold color scheme, but the current one, even without the winter background just feels too cold. The black and gold are somewhat iconic of Newgrounds, but overall I'm sure Tom knows what he is doing."

Whose Line Is It Anyway? is one of your favorite TV series. Tell my readers what the show is about and what you like about it.

Heretic-Anchorite:

"Whose Line Is It Anyway? Is a show based around bringing improv comedy to TV. the Shows format consists of "games" where four participants, which are of a small group of experienced comedians have to use their skills to play some role, character, or situation that the audience suggests either on the spot or just before filming. The participants are not told, or given any forewarning about any of the roles, and have to perform on the spot in from of a live audience and cameras.

I absolutely love Whose Line. The cast is talented, funny and are always able to give a good performance. I always used to watch Whose Line late at night in my room during the summer. My father always used to tell me how he can hear me laughing so hard, despite how my room was on the second floor and he was on the first. The Show has been cancelled for a long time, and revived, but I haven't really been watching it. I prefer the old one. Also, the points don't matter."

You seem to be a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Can you tell my readers how you became a fan and what you like about the show?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"It’s just a show I enjoy. A long while back there was the big hype both for and against it, and since I have always been somewhat of a fan of animations and cartoons in particular, I decided to just check it out. It was alright, not some perfect “way of life” as some fans see it, and also not some “evil abomination” as others see it, it was just an enjoyable cartoon. As for why I like it, there no one big reason, but there are a good number of smaller ones. The writing is decent, I like the art style, the animation is smooth, and the humor can be pretty good. There are also many SFM and G-mod videos which involve both MLP and TF2, and depending on the video and author, they can be outright hilarious."

You are a fan of the Fallout franchise. Which one of the serious is your favorite? What would you like to see in the upcoming Fallout 4?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"My favorite has to be New Vegas, but they are all pretty good. Before Fallout I got into The Elder Scrolls, and since I was familiar with Bethesda and love their RPGs, I decided to check out NV. I like how it’s laid back enough to allow a player to kick back, explore, and enjoy themselves, yet it has enough of a story to drawn you in and to peak your interest. I also enjoy its use of classic Sci-Fi and general satire. It can be a really nice break from games like TF2."

You are a member of the Team Fortress 2 Crew. When did you start playing this game and which aspects of it do you like the most?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I started playing TF2 almost 3 years ago. There are many reasons I like TF2, between its carefully developed structure (although it’s not perfect), its well thought out classes, its sense of humor and it's almost exclusive online playing. It's a game that you have to really know, be used to, and have hours of experience in to be good at it, and you want to be good at it because of the ability of other players, the humor, and also the alluring characters the classes have.

The class that got me into TF2 is the spy. When I first of into it, I sucked, but after many hours of playing combined with studying good spies, good competitive spy gameplay, the other classes, and the game itself, I got much, much better. Now I am usually in the top 3 in valve servers, and even on people's personal servers I get complements from people who have 2000+ hours and highlander experience in, and I am also decent at the other classes.

Another thing I like about TF2 is its f2p model. Unlike some companies who use bullshit in game currencies, allow you to buy direct upgrades, and only really care about getting your money, TF2 gives you the full game, has a drop system that will give you different weapons, and the in game purchases are mainly for things that are purely cosmetic."

Back in 2010 you mentioned that you have an Akita. When did you get her? Share some of your favorite moments that you had with your dog.

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I got her back in 2007, and I've had a few great moments with her. There was one at night, when I was about to go to sleep and she started to bark like crazy. I knew something was up because she never randomly barks much, so I get up, and turn my a few lights on to see what is happening and as soon as I turned it on I hear someone on my apartment's deck running away. I made sure to give her a good reward for that. There was another time when I was headed to my bedroom at night, and unknown to me at the time she was laying down in my room. When I turned my light on, she surprised the hell out of me.

Overall, she is a great dog, and she has a very upbeat personality. Here's a picture:

Back in 2011 you mentioned that you would like to become a psychologist. What inspires you about this occupation?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I used to want that. Even as a child I always enjoyed observing people, how they think, what assumptions they make, and asking myself questions about them. I would always question my answers as well, and I would look for a more objective assessment of things. This lured me into psychology because it is the application of science onto human behavior. Eventually I got a distaste for the field and I have since chose a different path.

I got into it because it applied science, which is a method, to behavior. There was logic, observation, experimentation at its foundation, but what I saw later was that many people in the field just get some type of therapy degree and act like they are Dr. Phil or Oprah, rather than scientist. It seems to have become a toy for housewives rather an application of the scientific process. Now I'm seeking an Electrical Engineering degree. I always loved pure math and sciences, and I have a talent for it to."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I tend to be a very secretive person, I’ve already shared a few secrets of mine here, but I suppose a one more won’t hurt. I have always had an interest in things like espionage, assassination, and secretive cults like the Hashshashin. It’s one reason I have Altair as my icon."

What can we expect from you in the future, Heretic-Anchorite?

Heretic-Anchorite:

"I'm really not that sure. In short, something significant happened to me in 2011. I am a very different person because of it, and that time feels like it was a lifetime ago. I am mainly on my own now, and although I have some plans and thing I am preparing for, I am mainly working things from the seat of my pants. I do plan to get a masters in a hard science/engineering degree, and a few other things which I won't share at this time. I always loved science and math. I'll keep in touch and share when the time is right.   "
