Interview with Pkmn2

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Pkmn2.

When did you find Newgrounds?

Pkmn2:

"It all began with a CD in 2004-ish. The true origin of this CD went unknown, but one thing is for sure. This CD contained games and cartoons. The amount was so overwhelming, it kept me busy for a long time. The genre and quality of those “games” varied from each other. I kept on playing this collection and dug deeper until I found a cartoon called “Yoshi’s Island – Razoric.exe”. Ah, from this moment on something has changed inside me.

It robbed my childhood innocence, but gave me something in return.

Sprite movies and flash flicks.

Razoric.com was the first time I became aware of flash animations and jesus…

The site was full of animation with gore and sick humor. It makes you wonder why I haven’t gone mentally insane yet. Anyway after a strong decline of new animations I started to check the site’s affiliates and two caught my eyes the most, which was a Mario humping the air VGDC and an orange one that had a tank displayed (Newgrounds).

I have first entered Newgrounds in 2005 and thought nothing much about it since I couldn’t find any sprite animations at first. I actually spent more time on VGDC watching all those sprite animations over and over again and it led me to many other great (sprite) artists. But this is another story…"

Why did you join?

Pkmn2:

"Razoric and Video Games Director’s Cut are slowly fading away as they were no new animations coming from them. So I started to spend more time on my third choice.

I have noticed that it was presenting so many animations daily, it made me realize that this website is no way managed by a single person. That’s when I took notice of the forums. I didn’t know that SO many people were sharing the same interest(s) as me.

Since I was learning how to use Macromedia Flash 8 Pro, I wanted to ask these people for help. That didn’t work without a Newgrounds Gold Account.

I registered and so a new Newgrounds member was born in 2007."

Why did you choose the username Pkmn2?

Pkmn2:

" Huh, how DID I get my username?

People tend to assume that it’s the short form of “Pokémon”.

Back then I was only interested in the first generation of Pokémon games though.

So my other theory would be that I was playing “Super Smash Brothers: Melee” and I used to play Ness a lot. The fact that he kept spouting “PK-THUNDER!”, “PK-FLASH!”, “PK-THIS!”, “PK-THAT!” is perhaps one of the reasons I ended up calling him “PK-Man”.

I thought that would be a cool name to use, but why I ended up using this one is beyond me."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Pkmn2:

"I can truly say that I have completely changed over the past years, but isn’t it natural for a person to change?

When I first started here on Newgrounds, I couldn’t communicate properly with others due to the lack of proper English. Because of this I mostly spouted nonsense or I was very enraged by the slightest disagreement, even though the members gave me a proper and reasonable response.

And now look at me! I still spout nonsense, but at least my English has improved, right?

Hahaha!

…right?

…Let’s move on."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Pkmn2:

"Yes, I do. Spending time on Newgrounds gives people the opportunity to meet potential artists and so it’s only natural, that you will find yourself following those content creators.

Unfortunately most of my favorite artists are either not active anymore or they simply changed. But my ever-growing list still has a few mention-worthy artists. Some of them are well-known and others just made a single animation. But even with one animation you can surprise someone.

Please take a peek at my favorite user’s list, but be careful though. There are a few animators inside, that make A-rated content."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

Pkmn2:

"I can say for sure that I do not despise any of the users here. I am a very open-minded person and normally avoid conflict. I did had a confrontation with @Alvin-Earthworm once.

It was not anything personal, but it did make me a bit angry. It was during the time when he was still working on his series “Super Mario Brothers Z” and nobody knew that his most recent entry will be his last one (for now).

Episode 8 contained a running animation that was certainly made by me and I wasn’t aware of it.

I know it is just a mere 7-8 frames but to think that someone I really admire takes something that I’ve worked on, is really surprising.

I approached him and talked with him about the matter. Case closed. No harm done.

I wish he would mention me in the credits though.

Yeah, in short. I like Newgrounds and its wicked community."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

Pkmn2:

"The Newgrounds forums. I wish I was more active in that edge.

It is a really nice place to chat, discuss and rant. The vast amount of topics to talk about never seem to stop. There are topics that can be really bizarre or pointless, but people still respond and leave their opinion as if it was the most natural thing on Earth. These are the kind that kept me coming back to this website.

Many users are also very good at troubleshooting, providing support on subjects such as programming or the website itself. I wouldn’t make silly animation now, if Newgrounds didn’t guide me back then.

So I owe the community a lot.

My most favorite subforum would be the youngest addition to the Newgrounds forums, which is the “Collaboration” subforum.

Artists from various ends are coming together and create something as a team. I find it also a really cool place to meet other fellow artists.

Hmmm… Out of all the users here, who should I pick for an interview?

My first pick would be my partner and good buddy @Ran-Cossack.

If he finds out, that I’m yet again slacking off, then I might lose a leg or two. Hahaha.

Otherwise I would take @Kel-chan, because she makes gorgeous Japanese-ish animations and illustrations and I’m really interested in her backstory."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Pkmn2:

"I can feel their presence, to say the least. Since I’m a good user and want no problem, I’ve never confronted the mods. But I still appreciate their effort on keeping the BBS clean.

I don’t know about the current situation, but hasn’t it become easier to moderate the BBS compared to the previous years?"

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Pkmn2:

"I H8T CHANGE!

Nah, just joking. I was very surprised at the release of the new design. I didn’t exactly had the ability to check the internet when it happened. I actually like the current layout a lot more. Visitors and users had a better view on all the things of what Newgrounds has to offer.

However I liked the 07’s design more. It had such a simplistic charm to it. The vector-ised town background on the logo was so nice to look at. That simple design made Newgrounds stood out from others.

I would want to see a mix of the current one and the old one.

I’ve heard that a new redesign is coming, which ditches the orange color scheme.

…Please don’t let it happen. It is bad enough that Nintendo has changed their color logo from red to grey."

You took part in some Newgrounds award winning collaborations, the most recent one being the Christmas Collab 2013. Do you in general prefer to work on creative content in groups? Do you plan to be part of more collabs in the future?

Pkmn2:

"Since I like the “Collaboration” forum so much, I mostly prefer to work with others. Working in a group makes creating content much more easier and fun. It’s also the perfect opportunity to share experience between members.

But like any other artist, I always tend to be selfish and want things done my way.

It’s also a great responsibility to supervise the whole affair.

Team work has its pro’s and con’s, but I can say, that working in a group is much better than being an one-man army."

Back in 2013, you released a voice demo to the Audio Portal. Is becoming a voice actor something that you would like to do as career option? Which Newgrounds voice actors do you like the most?

Pkmn2:

"Not many people know this, but I used to be a singer when I was young. I wasn’t anything spectacular though. I had a few performances at birthday parties and contests, but even then I thought I was pretty below average.

Years later I’ve started to gain interest in putting my voice in a few of my animations. I have zero acting skills and it’s really showing. I mean, just look at my attempt in Parallel Memories Episode 1-1. It’s worse than Tommy Wiseau’s acting in “The Room” and that’s quite the accomplishment. Hahahaha.

I hope I get better with voice acting though, but I wouldn’t consider VA as my next step for now.

There are a bunch of voice actors and actresses in Newgrounds and picking one of them is quite the hassle. So I’ll pick one that isn’t as popular.

@Mila-Chan is a great voice actress with a lot potential. Her performance in the “DeDeDe’s Minions” series is very good and it’s unfortunate that she hasn’t gotten more requests by now.

Maybe I’ll do that someday. Hahaha."

In that year you also had a vacation in the USA. Which states did you visit? What impressed you the most and do you want to re-visit the USA in the future?

Pkmn2:

"Oh, I spent most of the time in California and went to Vegas for a short time.

I basically did everything what I normally would do in a vacation. Visit places, eat local food and have fun. I’m a huge fan of arcades and I had the luck to visit multiple of them.

The highlight of my vacation would be my spontaneous and absolutely not-planned visit at EVO.

For those who don’t know, the Evolution Championship Series (EVO for short) is the largest fighting game tournament in the world.

I didn’t do a single research on WHERE it was actually held. Heck, the WHEN was a mystery for me as well. I saw the news on the internet and I was surprised that EVO was held on the same time where my parents and I would go to Las Vegas.

As soon as I have entered the place, I was amazed. I’ve never seen so much hype in one spot. The matches were highly intense and there was not a single moment, where the crowd wouldn’t go nuts.

EVO is also the reason, why I got into Skullgirls. And speaking of Skullgirls…"

One of the games that you broadcast on your Twitch account is Skullgirls. Tell my readers what makes Skullgirls a great fighting game and which characters and playstyles you prefer.

Pkmn2:

"Skullgirls is an independently developed 2D fighting game by Reverge Labs. The people behind this game are working hard in making this game as enjoyable, but also tournament-worthy as possible.

I like Skullgirls because of three reasons. The first would be that I can finally play a fighting game on PC with decent online capabilities. Thanks to GGPO’s netcode it made fighting games in an online environment much more enjoyable and playable.

The second would be that I don’t own a console that has Marvel VS Capcom 3 and Skullgirls is a nice replacement.

And my last reason would be that I have seen the game in EVO and it was hell a lot of fun to play. It is so good that I have bought the exclusive EVO-themed Skullgirls T-Shirt. It’s a nice souvenir that keeps me reminding of the cool times at EVO and in America overall.

I can play all characters in the game, but I mostly prefer Peacock. She has a lot of projectiles in her arsenal, but she is also quite capable on point. I do think she’s quite lame due to her bullet-hell-esque nature, but I never resort to such tactics. "

Parallel Memories is your own sprite animation series, starring Marichu. Tell me about the background story of the Parallel Memories universe and what we can expect to see in the future from this project.

Pkmn2:

"Parallel Memories is about a boy who is a victim of a failed experiment. The intention of the experiment is to gain the ability to jump into digital media and allow humans to fully interactive with the characters and surroundings within said media.

Unfortunately the project backfired so catastrophically that it fired the boy’s DNA and other information into the cosmos.

Finding himself in a completely different universe full of surprises and absurdity, the amnesiac boy who has given himself the name “Marichu” has no other choice, but to go into an adventure in getting more information about his origin.

There’s only a half of an episode out there, but I’m certain that I’ll continue on working on this big project. The hardest task in making a series is to keep working on it. @Ran-Cossack keeps telling me on working on the project, but I’m as stubborn as it can get.

Please understand. I guarantee hard work and commitment in each and every single animation I make and good things just need their time.

But as for now, enjoy the current (and only) episode of Parallel Memories."

You are from Austria. What are you thoughts on your country winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2014? If you could decide, which singer/band would represent your country next year, when Austria will be the official host of the Eurovision Song Contest?

Pkmn2:

"I can hardly talk about the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 since I have never really paid attention to it in the first place. But I can say that I was surprised when I read in the newspapers that the sausage won the contest. I went ahead and checked the song he sang in the contest. I have no idea what kind of songs the other contestants performed so it is hard for me to say that Wurst’s song is the best.

I think that Eurovision is all more about the bizarre acts and not the song themselves, but that is my point of view.

So in order to reflect the weirdness of this event, I would take Otto Waalkes as a representative for Austria. There’s no better choice for this crazy song contest than a crazy guy with great humor. And yes, I know that he’s from Germany…"

I think that you like Pokémon. What are your thoughts on Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire getting remakes for the Nintendo 3DS?

Pkmn2:

"I would not consider myself a huge Pokémon fan, because I’ve only played the first generation of Pokémon.

I spent most time playing “Pokémon: Yellow Edition” for Nintendo GameBoy.

Oh, that would be the reason for the creation of this Marichu character of mine. Sheesh, a youngster sure didn’t have a lot imagination back then.

Anyway it is only recently that I have bought “Pokémon: White Edition” for Nintendo DS.

So it took me 12 years to buy a new edition.

My verdict on that game? Jesus, Pokémon sure has changed and it is still fun to play even after 12 years. I sure did take my time.

The remake of Ruby and Sapphire edition would be a totally new game for me and it looks interesting too. I have no plans on getting it though."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Pkmn2:

"Secrets, huh?

The pronunciation of my username is [pɪkmɛnˌtʊ]  as in “pick·men·two”

So, yeah. It bugs me a bit if people call me Pokemon-2, but I don’t really blame them.

I made several sprite comics when I was young, but I lost all of them due to a hard drive issue.

What’s else there to say about me?

I have no fixed plans in life, my hair color is black, I have a younger sister that wonders why the heck I am sitting in front of the PC the whole day, my love story is a mess, I hate anime, that relies heavily on power levels, I consider social networks a tumor on the internet and yet I have an account in Facebook and Twitter,…

Sheesh, my real life can’t get any more boring, can it?

Oh wait. I have a friend that keeps making me feel like crap and I still hang out with him. Huh, friendship is sure weird sometimes.

So, really. I’m a very honest person and my secrets are nothing spectacular.

Oh and @TomFulp / @WadeFulp, I’m hotlinking all of my animations, which are uploaded here on Newgrounds, to my website.

Please don’t kill me…

I’ll try to get my own host, but I currently lack the financial resources for it."

What can we expect from you in the future, Pkmn2?

Pkmn2:

"You can expect my presence on Newgrounds. In the forums, in the chat, as a comment. Newgrounds has become a part of my life and it would make a thousand lolis and me very sad if it should ever disappear in this vast cyber universe.

You will hopefully see new episodes of Parallel Memories and most importantly (sprite) animations from my side.

Only time can tell what I will do in the future, but that's the plan for now.

I want to thank my beloved supporters, fans, friends and family for giving me courage in making silly animations for the internet.

My biggest thanks goes to the readers for taking their time reading this lengthy piece.

Asandir, it was an honor to be interviewed by you and I hope I have satisfied your audience."

Alvin-Earthworm stole a running animation for Mario Bros Z?
I wonder if he's done that for other stuff.

Would be interesting to know, guess it would be difficult to find out with so many sprite movies floating around, unless the authors of the animation scenes see the content like in this case.

Pkmn2 is awesome. That parallel memories animation he made is one of my favorites here on NG. I cant wait for future installments

It's awesome, indeed ^^

Awww C: you're awesome bae
Love you so much boo dont let them get to you always stay true to your dreams <3
