Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user dlxrevolution.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose your username?

dlxrevolution:

"I actually have heard about Newgrounds for a long time. If I had to name a date, I'd say I first heard about it around 2004 - 05, when I first really got into internet gaming. Back then, however, to me it was only another website name, and I figured it was just a gaming site much similar to a Miniclip.com or aCandyStand.com and differed when it came to actually checking the site out. The first time I had truly came to Newgrounds was when a user on the Xgen Forums made a thread advertising his music and asking for advice. So he linked a song in which he submitted on this site. This may sound funny, but I my retardation is what ultimately got me to sign up for this site, because I thought that the user had made the song on this site, implying that this site had a Game/DAW that you could make music on and submit to the audio portal. I was truly let down when I found out you had to use a third party software and submit an mp3 file, and if I would've known that in the first place, I probably would've never signed up. I'll get more in depth with that subject later on in this questionnaire. I also remember the Audio taking forever to validate, and figured because it took that long for my first submissions, it would take that long for all of them.

The Community

Oh boy where do I start... Okay. The first time I went on the forums, I couldn't stand it, and thought it was a piece of shit. I also didn't read the rules, but that's beside the point. I never did, and still don't understand what's so bad about introducing yourself in the BBS, and didn't see anything wrong with the idea of having an introduction forum so that newcomers to this site can feel welcomed, instead of jumping in without getting to know the atmosphere. This, combined with the audio troubles, convinced me never to come back to this site again. Months later, however, a friend of mine IRL, whom I will mention later on, got me interested in the site again when I realized that after validation, your audio uploads instantly.

So all in all, if it wasn't for the audio portal, I wouldn't be here.

When I first started playing this MMORPG on Xgen called "Stick Arena", my main account name was DLX. It stood for Deadly (Dangerous) Lethal Xenial. (shut up >.<) In 2008, when Ballistick came out, someone had offered to buy a lab pass for me, and only needed my password. Being the dumbass that I was, I told him what it was and as it turns out, his true intentions were to steal my account (Scamming). Broken hearted and left with despair, I decided to make a new account named dlxrevolution. I often use that name for other sites and forums that I signed up for, such as:

xgenstudios.com and mmaforum.com I've always entertained the idea of getting a name change, and change my user to DLX, but seeing as that user already exists (>.<), that plan is out the window. Maybe I might ask to become D.L.X. sometime in the future."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

dlxrevolution:

"I have, in fact, changed my behaviors on this site since sign up. I've learned to appreciate cock jokes more. At first, I was like "Cock Jokes? Maaaan that's HOMO!". Now I'm like "Cock Jokes...yummm". I have also developed an alternate Newgrounds personality on the BBS where I usually troll and try to make jokes, aside from the occasional serious and non-witty responses, whereas in the audio portal, I act more like my usual self.

My time on this site, however, has not changed me in real life. If I have changed in real life, my time on this site had nothing to do with that change, more so me growing up as a person."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

dlxrevolution: "First and foremost, I must mention:

Fire118 - He is one of my good friends and one of the few people on NG who know me IRL. He ultimately got me back interested in coming here, and if it wasn't for him, you guys wouldn't see me. So, big up's to him.

Friends:

MattReeves - A buddy of mine that's in a Facebook music group that Fire118 created. I had made a song called Fadin in which he did a cover that I thought was UBER AWESOME. (Please remind me never to say that again). He's also critiqued some of my songs and has helped me become a better musician.

Lublub194 - Another buddy of mine in our facebook music group. The dude makes pretty good music.

Mizzjuicyflava - Got to add her on this list. She was one of the first BBS users to support me and my music making. She pretty nice and is also one of the coolest people on the BBS. <3

MiloBased - Milobased, or "BasedMilo" as I like to call him, is a pretty cool cat IMO. He's one of the funnier people on the BBS, and often gets into lots of trouble. Milo is like that friend that you love him so much, but you're scared to take him anywhere because you're afraid he'll fuck shit up. One thing I can honestly say is that he's very polarizing.

Skaren - The Leader of the only official Skype Chat group (That I know of), me and him have talked about some random shit, and I've found the we have a lot in common. Social situations, high school relations, shit like that. He has always shown a great appreciation for Rainbow Dash (Character on My Little Pony), and though I don't watch MLP, I have always supported him in that respect, and the notion that "Rainbow Dash is the best pony. If you think anything else, then your opinion is wrong)

Asandir - Asandir is not only someone that I consider a friend, but someone that tries to help every consider it a friend. Until I receive actual proof of what Asandir's gender is, I'm just going to refer to Asandir as an "it", as 90% of people on NG refer to Asandir as a he when Asandir itself told me it was a girl. But gender aside, Asandir is a pretty cool person and one of the more beloved people on NG.

GameJunkie - GJ has done his best to remind everyone of who the most notable Male lesbian is (Which is yours truly). He and I have had interesting conversations in the NG chat about different things ranging from Wealth, to racing, and even military affairs.

Madcow - Not sure if he considers me as a friend or not, but he's always been one of my favorite posters on the bbs. He seems to take on an "I don't give a fuck" bad boy persona that I've always found to be hilarious.

Other friends...

Necroticcat, Nor, New-groundforme, Blauwwolkje92, Lady-Stardust, BizzarroPMP, MumboJimmyTheCaterpillar, llssm, Jester, ImaTouko-chan, Roolygirl, WadeFulp, Amaranthus, Jay, Blazejsg, Krutches, Cody104, Mia, Tails5121, Gagsy.

If whoever's reading this considers me a friend and I haven't mentioned their name, DON'T THINK I DON'T LOVE YOU <3 <3 <3 ^_~ "

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

dlxrevolution:

"No.

I find that it is childish, and a complete utter waste of time and energy to consider someone on the internet most likely 3,000 miles away to be an "enemy", or "arch nemesis" unless they have done something negatively affect your life. The most likely reason I find that someone hates someone else over the internet is usually because they strongly have a different outlook on life, in which case I would consider that to be more of a "Stop liking...WHAT I DON'T LIKE!!!" type of deal.

Although...

If I HAD to mention someone on this subject, it would be AZbull. There was never any bad blood, more like a friendly rivalry, as we sometimes traded words on the BBS when I first started becoming active."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

dlxrevolution:

"The BBS is a good place to show your stuff. And by stuff, I mean smarts, music, art, movies, and more. The BBS has always been a cool place to communicate different ideas and opinions about different subjects. The General forum has always been the main forum that I post on, though I started off posting in politics. I the randomness and the hilarity of the forums is what has drawn me to somewhat enjoy posting in them."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

dlxrevolution:

"The moderators here do a fairly good job; I have to give it to them. They are good at letting the users have some fun on the general forum, while at the same time, not letting things get out of hand. One complaint I have, is the rule that "if you post in a spam thread, you will get banned". Some moderators strictly enforce that policy while others are more lenient. It can be a bogus rule at times, because it can be difficult to spot a spam thread, and if you do feel like you've posted in spam thread without realizing, it is always too late. One other complaint is that moderation can be inconsistent at times, with some possible Spam threads surviving, and while others of the same stature get locked. Also, some mods will ban you a lot longer than others (so I've been told), while other things tend to get past them. Some mods will also make up rules that aren't listed on Newgrounds and will ban you after the fact, something that I consider to be abuse. However, I haven't had much trouble with getting banned, so I won't elaborate too much more on this subject.

I've noticed that many people in this interview usually put who they think the worst user on the moderation team is. All of them are good in my humble opinion, but if I had to name a worst mod, it would probably be EyeLovePoozy. He can be power hungry at times (that for which I can't blame him, because I guarantee there are some BBS user's that would be far worse if put in the same position), going a bit overboard on banning users, and locking potentially good threads, and sometimes even breaking his own rules. Even though I consider him the worst of the mods, I also consider him to be the moderator with the mod since of humor, as some of the things he posts are rather funny and he tends to be a troll. So he's a better user than he is a mod."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

dlxrevolution:

"Moderation isn't something I've been aiming for as a Newgrounder. But, if I got offered the opportunity, I can't say that I would turn it down. I do know that once you become moderator, it is essentially your Job" on the internet to keep things in order, and your margin for error goes down 1,000%.

I'd be a pretty lenient moderator overall. If a user post's something that I strongly disagree with and what the most of the rest of NG would consider heinous, I most likely wouldn't ban that user because I believe in freedom of speech, and what you say shouldn't be regulated unless it's strongly against the rules. Otherwise, I'd probably be just like the other moderators and ban people that break the rules, and only something that is in the rules."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The redesign is finally here. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

dlxrevolution:

"I was completely blown away. I mean seriously, my hair literally looked like Freakazoid when I opened up the newly redesigned Newgrounds for the first time. I could easily tell they had put a lot of time and work into redesigning Newgrounds and I must say that they did an excellent job.

However, if there were complaints that I just had to make, it would be that I was disappointed that there is no edit button on the forums. But of course, some people don't want an edit button in fear of trollers haven't more leverage in their arguments by going back and editing their posts. So for me, that's far of an opinionated suggestion rather than a logical one.

Another complaint that I think most will (or should) agree with is that the flashes, unless created a certain way, don't have a video control feature. As soon as you open the page that the video is on, the flash is GOING to play instantly, and as loud as possible rather you intended or not unlike the Audio, where you can skip through the song, play/stop/pause, change the volume, etc... That is one aspect of the flash system that I think Newgrounds is way behind on. But, I seldom visit the flash portal anyway; this isn't too much of a big deal."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

So, far you made one flash. Do you think that you will make more flashes in the future? Tell me also which is your favorite flash on Newgrounds?

dlxrevolution:

"Actually, I wasn't the sole creator of the flash, Milobased is. But, I did take part in doing the illustration and music, while he did the flash work. I do plan on submitting some flash later on as time goes by. I've already got some ideas in my head that I have been thinking about making into a flash or flash series. "

You are an audio artist. Tell our readers how you started to make music and what kind of music you make.

dlxrevolution:

"Frankly, it depends on your definition of "Making Music" when I started.

If you count beating on the table and lollygagging as making music, then I've been doing it for as long as I can remember.

If you count playing different tunes (Not exactly well) on piano's and organs, I've been making music since I was five.

If you count going on an online limited DAW that you can make and save music electronically, I've been making music since I was eight. When I first started truly getting into the internet, my dad introduced to this game on Shockwave.com called Grooveblender 2, a game where you can put together preset patterns and drumbeats to create different songs. After that era, when I was around 11 or 12, I discovered this game in my shed called MTV Music Maker for the Playstation. I remember all summer long playing and making different songs on that game. I would leave the Playstation on for days because I didn't have a memory card. After that summer, I lost the game and was search for a new outlet to satisfy my music making needs.

From when I was 11-12 to when I was 16, I didn't really have a true musical outlet to create and save songs. I would play different music making games on different websites, but they just weren't enough to satisfy my musical needs. Then I heard about Newgrounds and its audio portal (as earlier stated). I listened to some of the songs (that I thought were made on this site), thought to myself "Yes! I finally found my musical outlet!", and instantly signed up, only to find out you can't make music on here, you need to use a program. Bummered as I was, friend of mine (Earlier stated) told me about FL Studio. So I started using that, submitted some stuff from there on, and I've been here ever since."

I can vaguely remember that you once thought that you were banned from submitting audio. Tell me what happened back then.

dlxrevolution:

"It was horrific, probably my worst day as a Newgrounder. I had gotten into a situation where I had accepted an invite to be a part of a song that had illegal material on it (Didn't know had the time). Since the mods couldn't prove everyone that had accepted the invite wasn't really involved, they just banned everyone associated with the song (which was about a good 30 people).

So of course I was angry at this, because not only had I pretty much signed up for this site to submit music and now I was banned, I have always been as meticulous as possible about keeping myself from getting banned from the audio portal (being that most of the bans are permanent). If I had the slightest of an inkling that a song that I was about to submit might be illegal or have illegal content, I made a thread about it on the audio forum to insure that it was okay to submit the song. Now I was banned for something unrealistic (30+ people a part of an illegal song), that wasn't even in the rules. I had even made a secondary account, dIxrevolution in order to submit music, then link my main account so that it could be credited.

But in the end, everything had settled, and I was happy and able to submit music. But future reference for the Staff/Mods, don't just make rules up as you go along. If you're going to enforce something, make sure it's in the rules so people can read it beforehand, and dumbasses that don't read can get what they deserve. Also (if it hasn't been done already) when someone invites you to be credited for their submission, there should be a notice at the bottom somewhere that if the song has illegal material, and you take credit, you also accept responsibility once disciplinary action ensues, even if you had nothing to do with the submission. I know it sounds dumb the someone accepts to take credit for a submission they weren't a part of, but sometimes an online friend may make a successful piece, and feel like his/her friends are supporters, and some people will accept the invite (in the case, 30 people).

/ rant"

The Audio Portal is an important part of Newgrounds. Tell me what you think about it and what kind of improvements you would like to see in the future.

dlxrevolution:

"What can I say about the audio portal...aw man...

Well, the system is MUCH better than the previous design version, and while the voting is still flawed, the ranking, and song classification system is much more organized.

My suggestion is that there should be more genre's (Gospel, Opera, ...etc). I don't want to have to continually submit something as miscellaneous when that songs genre is a clear classification, and something that just hasn't been added to the NG list. But then again, that's a pretty broad statement considering...you know...("Madness step! Godstep! What about Grind-Core! >:O")"

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

dlxrevolution:

"Secrets eh?

I'll tell you an embarrassing story. One Saturday when I was 7, I was at Taikwondo practice, and they were having a competition to see who would get to the next belt. Towards the end of the ceremony, we were doing our fighting motions in unison, and I decided to be the jackass funny guy to pretend he was the Kung Fu master. Everybody else was going what they were supposed to do, while I was doing combination punches, and dropkicks, and combinations. Little did I know, my Dad was sitting RIGHT THERE in the front seat. Even less did I know that the WHOLE Thing was being recorded. Then to top it off, there was a guy who actually knew what he was doing, that did a whole bunch of tricks at the end (With nun-chucks and all), and that just made me feel terrible. So they replayed the ceremony on the big screen, and the camera was following me while I was acting a fool. I was very ashamed. Looking back at it, it was funny, but terrible at the same time."

Lol Dix and cockjokes! :3

Yay :D

Dlx is awesome, I really need to start going on Skype again because it's been ages since that fucking group has been busy.

You should indeed talk with your friends :)

dlx is a pretty cool guy. eh makes music and doesn't afraid of anything.

While I agree that he is cool, I don't think that having fears and acknowledging them is a negative thing :)

dlx has 400 scars and 400 guitars.

Good to know :o

Cool! My homey! Yes I really do love his music. I hope and pray his music takes him to new heights.

I wish him luck too :)
