Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user RB.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username ComicD?

RB:

"I found Newgrounds and the end of 2013. I found out about it by watching Jazza's tutorials.
When I first visited Newgrounds, I was amazed by the layout. It didn't have that gradient-only look that most websites have, it was unique.

I watched a lot of animations but I didn't make an account until March. Newgrounds was a website that I only visited when I wanted to watch animations. I didn't know how fun it was. Later, I discovered the NG BBS. I posted on the Animation Forum and acted like a pro, until I found out about the General Forum.

The thing about Newgrounds that made me stay, because I was inactive at first, were the users.
I started making threads, like "How did you find NG". That thread made me my first friend, Wavepad.
My name ComicD comes from a superhero that I created. It is a shortening of "ComicDude". I like it as a name, but people used to make fun of me because of my username. They don't do it anymore."

Changed his name to NGComicd and then to RB

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

RB:

"I have changed as a user, but not in real life. The thing is that I treat Newgrounds as a community of friends, so it doesn't affect me in real life. I'm immature in real life, even though I'm 13, which in my country you are not considered that much of a kid. And I like to give short answers on the forums, which is what I usually do in real life. NG is something that doesn't make me waste my time, when I have free time.
Some friends of mine have heard me bang on about Newgrounds and they have joined, so I call that @dariokoroli @rockthelife @Bromer."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

RB:

"I like @WahyaRanger and @larrynachos. As you might know, I'm making a Forum Battle game.
Wahya and larry helped me a lot with it, and they are good friends.
I also like @NGPulp, his sense of humor is very cool, and he teached me how to deal with arguments.
Someone that should also be mentioned is @Wavepad. That guy helped me with his opinions."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

RB:

"No one. I love all the users of NG."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

RB:

"My opinion about the forums is that they are a pretty great way to get connected with users and have fun. I like them because you can talk, chit-chat and you can also gain reputation.
I also like the fact that stupid, pointless threads can get deleted or locked.

The forum that I like the most is the General. The thing about it that made me like it so much, is because you can talk about whatever you want. There is not a limit, you can go as far as you want without breaking the rules. And the fact that people post a lot more on it than they do in a forum like the Animation Forum. I also like the way that some people post. The way they use sarcasm and that humor is so great! I would like to see PsychoGoldfish get interviewed."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

RB:

"I have an opinion. I think that the mods do a great job, but they can get cocky some times. Y' know, they are like the police. Although I love what they do and they keep Newgrounds clean of bullshit.

I've never seen a portal mod doing his job, so I can only talk about the Forum moderators.
They keep the forum out of stupid threads. They ban stupid people. It's something you should thank them for, because they're doing a second job. Out of the mods, I like NekoMika, she's very active. I also like you for making interviews."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

RB:

"I am too young to judge, maybe in the future, but I'd like to.
I would like to be a forum moderator, because I know the forums well and I am very active."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You are an animator and so far have submitted 2 animations to Newgrounds. When did you start animating and what tools and programs do you use? Can you give my readers an insight on what animation projects you are currently working?

RB:

"I use a Wacom Intuos for my animations. Actually, both the animations were done using a mouse, because I got it recently. I use Adobe Flash CS6 for my animations. I am curently working on two projects, the first one is called "Dop and Trop". It's about a talking dog and his 20 year old owner. The other one is called "iShit", which is a parody of Apple's crap being similar to everything."

You recently created your own Patreon profile. What are your general thoughts on things like Kickstarter and Patreon? Do you think that they help independent and new talented creators to make interesting projects like more unique games a reality that couldn't be realized otherwise?

RB:

"My general thoughts on websites like KickStarter and Patreon is that they are a great place for independent artists.
Yeah. They help artists make want thy want to, but to me it's not for every artists.
Websites like that are for veterans, pros, experienced artists.
Young artist don't need that kind of support. What young artists need is support by websites like Youtube and Newgrounds, to get better and then turn it into something that can make you have a living out of it.

I don't know why I launched mine."

You live in Albania. If you would have to recommend tourists some places that they should visit, which ones would you recommend?

RB:

"Yes, I live in Albania and I'm Albanian. For tourists, I would recommend visiting Gjirokastra and Butrint for the South part. Gjirokastra is a city build all out of stones, and has beautiful mountains.
Butrint is a historical place, which has very beautiful artifacts and forests. It's definitely a place you should visit.
On the North, there are beautiful places like Valbona, which I recommend visiting. Valbona has a beautiful river and very beautiful mountains."

Seems that you like the Anime One Piece. Tell my readers what you like about this Anime and which character you like the most.

RB:

"Well, I see you really read a lot of my posts.
I's true, I am a fan of One Piece, it's a great anime.
What I like about One Piece is that the story is so great. The thing that it is so full of adventures, and it has that sort of goofy nature to it, while still managing to have an action packed anime. And the animation is way better than what I've seen from other animes.
Plus, it is full of hot chicks.
If you don't know what it is about, here is some explanation:
Once upon a time, there was a great pirate called Gold Roger. He was the king of all pirates. Before he died, he hid his treasure on a place called "The New World".
Luffy, a new pirate, gets a crew consisting of people he met and starts searching for the treasure and blah blah blah.
I like Sanji, he's cool and he's a perv. Just how an anime character should be."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

RB:

"Hmm. Nope. Secrets should remain secrets.
But I'm gonna tell you one:
I'm in middle school."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, NGComicd?

RB:

"From me you can expect more animations, the Forum Battle game and more and more posting.
Also, I'm making a comic book called "Dop and Trop", with 50 episodes."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user omega88x, who drew the amazing picture above ^^

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username omega88x?

omega88x:

"I was watching Youtube and I stumbled across footage of Super Smash Flash. I googled it and the link took me here. I was just watching movies and playing the games mostly, then I decided to take a look through the forums. It was cool seeing all the different things people talked about and I wanted in on the fun. My particular favorite threads were the photoshop threads. My name comes from the character Omega-E123 from Sonic Heroes. When I first played the game when I was 11 or so, I thought he was one of the coolest characters ever. Even to this day, I think he's a really cool character. As for the 88x, simply put, they're my favorite numbers and letter."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

omega88x:

"Not really, the only thing that's changed are my MS Paint art skills. Not that's a bad thing though, I try to post more on the forums once in awhile. My real life is a bit more active, I go out Wednesday and Friday every week and having a job to do all this stuff. But here or IRL, im still the same guy with the same personality."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

omega88x:

"I've always liked @Heinrich, I love all his photoshops he did when they were popular. When I take part of a photoshop thread I try to imagine what would he do, but he's so damn creative, you can't do what he does. @Timmy because he wanted to see more of my work in the icon battle thread and it feels good when people want more of your work. Also @DarkMatter because just like Timmy, he wanted to see more of my work in his thread The Portal is Under Attack."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

omega88x:

"Well not really, I get along with everyone and I've never had problems with anybody in particular. Just a few people being trolls but nothing that couldn't be easily ignored. So not really."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

omega88x:

"I think the forums are still pretty good, but the lack of traffic is noticeable. Personally it sucks that photoshop threads aren't as popular as they used to be. I usually stick to my main 3 General, Video Games, and Art. General being my favorite because of the variety of topics you see every day. If you could get Heinrich for an interview, that would be awesome, he used to be a mod, but now he's not. You could probably ask him a bunch of photoshop questions and such."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

omega88x:

"I think they're doing pretty good, they lock/delete the crap that needs it and I think it's cool some of them actually talk to you too. Most are pretty nice and do their jobs well. While there probably have been bad, even terrible, mods, they're good in my book."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

omega88x:

"Probably not, I'm not the best at controlling hectic situations when necessary . Would I give it a try, sure. It would be an interesting experience to see how I would be a mod. I think I would be like @NekoMika where she communicates with everybody and tries being friendly with all the users."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

omega88x:

"At first, I didn't like it because I had a older laptop and for some reason it never loaded the page correctly. But now, I like it a lot, seeing the artistic background adds a nice touch to Newgrounds"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You mentioned in one of your posts that you are a big fan of Robin Williams. What was your initial reaction when you heard about his passing? Which of his movies do you like the most?

omega88x:

"At first, I thought it was a joke, like how they said Jackie Chan died in a stunt accident. But I go to the news channels and there it is "Robin Williams has died." I almost cried when I saw that across the TV, he just seemed like one of those people that would live forever. Some of my favorite works from Robin Williams were Aladdin and Patch Adams. I even try to match the lesson of Patch Adams "laughter is the best medicine" everyday. Those movies are classics in my opinion and I still laugh at these movies. I also remember the Legend of Zelda commercial he did and that combined two awesome things, Robin Williams and The Legend of Zelda."

Back in July, you started playing Shadow of the Colossus. Please tell my readers what you like and dislike about this game and also share one moment that impressed you.

omega88x:

"Shadow of the Colossus was a fantastic game and deserves all the praise it gets. I love atmosphere it gives of being alone, the colossus themselves are just amazing to look at, and the puzzle like gameplay for the bosses are brilliant to discover. The only things I didn't like were the 15th colossus and , this is my fault, watching a lets play of this game. The gameplay was from game grumps and I couldn't help but watch, I forced myself to stop at the 10th colossus. The one moment that was most impressive was probably the 5th colossus fight when you grab on to the colossus and see it up close and you see the land zooming further out giving you an " Oh Shit" moment."

You are an artist and regularly contribute to threads like the 1st Annual Ng User Icon Battle with your pictures. When did you start drawing? Would you like to see more threads in the same vein, that tell an overarching story created by the drawn or photoshopped pictures of various users?

omega88x:

"I've always drawn since I was a kid, but as for MS Paint drawing, it was about 4 years ago. One day, I decided to give MS Paint a real go and I thought it looked pretty good. I try to draw at least once a week, I would draw more but it's hard for me to get that "spark" that makes me want to draw. That's why I like the Icon Battle thread and the Art Forum Battle Royale, they have so much to go on, that I can't help to be part of that. I would like more of these threads, but in moderation. If there are too many of them, they would lose that charm they had that made them special in the first place."

The Mega Man games are amongst you favorite games of all time. What was the first Mega Man game that you played and completed? Which ones of the series do you like the most? What do you think about the upcoming Mighty No. 9 game?

omega88x:

"The very first Mega Man game that I played was Mega Man X on SNES at the age of 5 or 6, but the first one I beat was Mega Man 8 on the Playstation around 8 or 9. It's pretty hard for me to list all my favorites, I like just about all of the games. But a quick top five are 5)Mega Man X Command Mission. 4)Mega Man 4. 3) Mega Man 2. 2) Mega Man X 1) Mega Man X4. I like Command Mission because how it's pretty much Final Fantasy X gameplay, but with Mega Man. Mega Man 4 is best gameplay wise to me because it hit a middle ground, not too difficult but still challenging. Mega Man 2 is just one of the best games ever made. It did everything right and knowing the limitations of the NES at the time, is still very impressive to this day, also that music is 8-bit bliss. Mega Man X improved on the Mega Man formula, adding bigger bosses, armor power ups, and top-notch gameplay and music. Mega Man X4 is my favorite because how it added Zero as a playable character and it added a new style to the franchise that I loved at the time. The bosses were memorable, the music was awesome, and this game was hard as hell to beat. As for MIghty No. 9, I'm very excited for this game, especially since Mega Man has been getting crap treatment for almost 5 years now. At least Nintendo did him justice by adding him to Super Smash Bros. I'm curious to see this game fully played out knowing all the different game modes are in store for this game, especially after its very impressive kickstarter."

omega88x:

"Im gonna make this short, I work at a McDonald's. It pays the bills and gives me "fun" money. The people I work with CAN be pretty fun to talk to though."

omega88x:

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user larrynachos.

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username larrynachos?

larrynachos:

"My first encounter with Newgrounds was in early 2008. I stumbled across the Audio Portal while looking for some music to listen to on my new CD player. The first song I heard was Betrayal of Fate by Goukisan and I fell in love with the music of Newgrounds. After that, I gradually explored the game and Fash Portal until I decided to create an account in 2010 under the name larynachos so I could keep the medals I won. A little while after creating my account, I got grounded for 9 months, so the account was left in the dust. Fast-forwarding to early 2013, I got my hands on a copy of FL Studio and began creating songs for this account.

The name larrynachos is the correct spelling of “larynachos”, which has been my internet alias since 4th grade. There isn’t a specific reason I chose this name. It was my friend’s World of Warcraft password and it sounded catchy, so it stuck with me."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

larrynachos:

"I’ve certainly become more obnoxious since I started posting regularly on the BBS. I’ve begun using obscene language more frequently, and I’ve become easily irritable. I’m not sure if I can blame all that on Newgrounds though, because a lot of things have happened to me in real life as well that might have made me this way.

There are positive changes as well, however. I’ve greatly improved my music composition skills since I joined Newgrounds, thanks to the constructive criticism I’ve received from supportive members. I’ve met many peers and I’ve made a lot of new friends, all thanks to Newgrounds."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

larrynachos:

"I’ve made so many good friends here. The first user I met was Thatawkwardkid, who inspired me to start animating. Cacola and TeraVex are my two “music buddies”, and we’ve formed a band called The Techno Trio. I’ve learned so much about music by chatting with them and listening to their music, and I can’t thank them enough. Lastly, etherealwinds is a guy I look up to as an older brother of sorts. He inspired me to try composing music in a genre I never knew I was interested in. We’ve had some really deep and thought provoking conversations on Skype, and I think he’s a really swell guy."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

larrynachos:

"I’m not usually one to call someone out like this, but I can’t stand Chronamut. He’s arrogant, egotistic, and ignorant. During the time I spent in the NG irc chat, I learned things about him that made me hate him even more. His excessive spirituality and sociopathic tendencies blind him from even the basics of human morals and ethics. He doesn’t seem to comprehend that users on the internet are real people with real feelings. If it doesn’t affect him, then he chooses not to care. We’ve gotten into several arguments, and he’s too stubborn to admit when he’s wrong, so he attempts to get in the last word and change the subject. To be put simply, he’s a child with an unmalleable viewpoint."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

larrynachos:

"I’m sort of ambivalent towards the forum and it's community. On one hand, I like the good users who make good posts, and on the other hand you have the dumb users who make crappy threads and spam in others. Even with the idiots and trolls, the general forum is my favorite forum. Since there aren’t very many restrictions to what you can post there, it’s become a melting pot of different content. The other forums just aren’t as “alive” as general. There have been threads that create great discussions and debates, and there have been dumb threads that die quickly or get locked a few hours after creation. I think you’ve already interviewed all of the users I’d like to see interviewed (who qualify), so no."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

larrynachos:

"I haven’t seen all of the mods in action, but the ones I have seen do a great job of keeping Newgrounds under control. NekoMika is probably the most notable (and my favorite), because she’s friendly with the community, but very stern with trolls. Back-From-Purgatory is my second favorite because while he’s less fun, he gets the job done swiftly and efficiently (and on top of that, he makes awesome music). Sometimes I think they lock threads a bit preemptively, but I’ve learned to trust that they know when enough is enough."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

larrynachos:

"I’d like to become a moderator because it would give me a sense of purpose and responsibility. I think I would function best as an Audio or Forum moderator because I’m very familiar with those two areas of the site. I’m not sure I really qualify, as I’m prone to acting prematurely and biasedly. Since I’m just a kid, I don’t yet know what’s truly right and wrong, so I would probably make a lot of poor judgments when moderating. If I was too lenient and merciful, I would probably never make a good call when taking action, and if I followed the bbs/audio portal rules to the letter I would probably appear very mean or strict, and I don’t want that."

You are an animator. When did you start animating? What aspects about working together with other animators on projects do you like the most?

larrynachos:

"I really wouldn’t consider myself an animator. I doodle as a hobby, and I occasionally motion tween my doodles and add sound. I started animating in March of 2013. I got the trial version of Adobe Flash during spring break. At that same time, I met Thatawkwardkid, who taught me the basics of flash and helped me draw better."

Working with other animators is a lot of fun as well as an educational experience. I get to meet new people and make new friends, which is always fun. At the same time, I get to look at other animators’ drawing styles and methods, which helps me improve mine."

Earlier this year, you created a 2D version of Slender, called Slender2D: Forest. What inspired you to create this game? What are some of the most scary moments that you witnessed in video games?

larrynachos:

"I wanted to make a 2d version of Slender ever since I played it for the first time in 2012. Actually, I was too busy pooping my pants at the time (I hate jumpscares), but afterwards I was like “Hey, this could be cool in a 2d rpg-style game!”, and then promptly didn’t do anything for two years. In march I found a cool Slender spritesheet and remembered the idea. Making the game took like two days (bug fixes took another day, but I didn’t actually fix anything), and the payoff was surprisingly satisfying. A lot of people enjoyed it, and that made me happy.

The scariest moments in video games is probably when you get trapped and can’t do anything or go anywhere. The sheer terror in knowing that I have no control makes me want to shut off the computer/console and go sob in a corner (in fact, a lot of my nightmares involve me playing a horror game and being unable to shut off the console while a scary noise gradually gets louder and a monster on screen gets closer. While the monster in the game closes in on the in-game character, I feel like I’m in danger in real life)."

Aside from creating games and animations, you are also a good audio artist, with Winter Dreams from your album Bloody memories being one of your most well received songs. Tell my readers when you started working on this album, what you learned in the process and which songs in hindsight you are most proud of.

larrynachos:

"I was unaware that Winter Dreams was my most well received song. That’s surprising, since it’s a pretty generic and repetitive song. I started working on Bloody memories in September of last year, first using some of the leftover projects that I didn’t put in Stubborn Beginnings. After I finished Elegant Oscillations, the second track to the album, I was struck with writers block. I struggled to create a track for about a week, and then I managed to finish up The Dying Trance. The name comes from my fear that my musical touch was dying. I frantically tried to keep composing, creating video game remixes to keep myself from giving up on music. In December, the writers block crumbled, and I smashed out song after song until I finished the album in January. During that whole ordeal, I learned that I shouldn’t try to chase down inspiration. Instead, I should wait for it to strike and then take advantage of it, creating songs until it subsides. I also learned a lot of cool new Fl Studio techniques, like automation clips and modulation.

I’m actually not proud of the music I created on this album. The songs on Bloody Memories are rushed and unpolished. When looking at my entire collection, I could pick out five songs that I’m most proud of:

Rise. This is by far my best piece. It was incredibly well received, and although it didn’t make it past the NGADM auditions, it got frontpaged, so I’m very proud of it.

Nostalgia. Although I completely botched the Vocaloid vocals, the instrumental bridge still gives me chills whenever I listen to it.

The Last Show. After feeling disappointed with the low rating I got on Captive in Darkness (the first track to my 4-track album “Suffering in Silence”), I worked long and hard on a second track, focusing more on the mastering aspect of the song. I spent hours tweaking the sounds until it sounded right, boosting the bass and adding the right amount of reverb to the song. It still wasn’t very popular, but I felt really good about what I had composed.

Troubled Silence. Good lord is this song amazing. It’s fast paced and energetic, and all of the instruments blend together thanks to my increased knowledge in mastering.

Goodbye. Aside from the muddy drums and the impromptu Vocaloid vocals, this piece sounds magnificent. I was still an amateur at mastering when I composed it, but the reverb made the plucks sound beautiful and “airy”."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

larrynachos:

"I’m bisexual. It’s not really a secret, but nobody really knows about it, so I guess it counts. My philosophy is that sexual attraction and romantic attraction are two different things that can be kept separate (lust and love). I can like a dude romantically, but not be sexually attracted to guys. I kind of had a revelation when I met a guy and we became friends. After some heartfelt chatting, I began to realize that I kinda liked him. I still liked females too, so I just wrote myself off as bisexual."

What can we expect from you in the future, larrynachos?

larrynachos:

"Honestly, I don’t think you can expect much. I screwed up my computer’s soundcard, so I can’t compose music until I get USB headphones or a USB adapter for the headphones I have now. I was planning a second vocaloid album titled “My Monochrome World” featuring Yohioloid, but with my computer out of order, I’m already behind schedule by a week. I’m also being hit with the pressures and responsibilities of a young adult. With my parents constantly telling me to get a job and a driver’s license and my high school classes pounding me with essay after essay, it’s very hard to properly express my creative genius. On top of all that, I’m in the middle of a battle against myself. I’m busy fighting the adolescent depression and anxiety that I’m sure everyone experiences at my age. I can’t help feeling like I’ve become irrelevant, and it’s kind of hard to compose when I’m constantly telling myself “No, that’s not good enough. That melody is rubbish. This sounds like crap. Why do I even bother?”.

But who knows. Things might get better for me, and I might snap back around with a lot of fantastic content for you guys ;)"

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user NeonSpider.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username NeonSpider?

NeonSpider:

"I think I found Newgrounds sometime around 2000 or 2001. At that time I would play games on it occasionally but I didn't sign up for an account. I was busy with schoolwork working towards my degree at that time so it was just something I'd hop on for a quick game now and then. I have enjoyed the games and movies on Newgrounds for quite some time, but as you can see I didn't register for an account until somewhat recently (10/4/13 according to my profile). I guess it depends on the person, but while I was working towards my degree I devoted much time and energy towards that, in lieu of other things. I think sometimes people don't take their college/university degree paths seriously, and there are many people who, although they've made it that far, aren't able to finish out their degrees. So if it's something you want to complete, it's important to set aside everything else in pursuit of that goal. Nowadays I'm less time-pressured.

I always viewed Newgrounds as having quality games and movies, although it was also always a case of finding the gems. So part of the motivation to get an account was to more easily keep track of favorite games and movies. Another motivation was for being able to track game medals. So while I'd say the majority of Newgrounds content doesn't particularly interest me, it's the high-quality submissions which really make it worth the while. And I do like that it's more artist-centered rather than end-user centered, unlike most other sites. So it's a great platform for artists to showcase their work if they wish to do so. And anyone who complains about lack of content on Newgrounds has no one to blame but themselves since it's open to anyone to submit content. I actually don't like people who are too demanding and want entertainment NOW NOW NOW!!

As to why I chose the name NeonSpider -- well, it was the first name I tried which wasn't already taken. Obviously when you join a site nowadays it can be quite a pain to think up names only for them to already be taken. It's also a quite nice name and I like it and it suits me although a Google search shows there are other people who have used the name elsewhere, but I did independently conceive of it. Pretty much any two words put together and someone somewhere is already using it, am I right? Also I like electronic music, trance, glowsticks, etc... and I get along well with spiders. No arachnophobia here! When most people find a large spider in their residence, they would freak out, but I'm at peace with them and generally leave them alone. I think they're mostly beneficial anyway."

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

NeonSpider:

"Have I changed over the time I've been on Newgrounds? I would say not really. I may post a bit more than I did at first but that's not really a big change. It'd be different for someone who joined Newgrounds as a kid and then grew up since personality can change completely in that time. It can even change a lot from someone's early to late 20s or 30s. I've changed a lot in those times but I wasn't a member of Newgrounds either."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

NeonSpider:

"Yes there are many users I like in fact. NGPulp, Phobotech, TheGamechanger, Amaranthus, Thor, NekoMika, Piggler, CiviLies, Radaketor, yurgenburgen, Xenomit, Feoric, Lich and tons of other people I'm sure I'm unintentionally omitting so my apologies in advance. I enjoy reading their posts. Some are insightful. Some are just plain entertaining. Some, such as Xenomit, are a bit controversial but people need that from time to time. They get too complacent in their own ways of thinking and even if someone is completely wrong, it's not a bad thing to get other perspectives. I'd say it's a good thing, especially if it gets people talking or it gets people to think in ways they're not accustomed to."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

NeonSpider:

"Yes there are users I don't like. In general I don't like toolish sorts who are big on pushing mindless conformity, marketing BS, pro-corporatism, and so forth. I also don't like people who have no respect for older things or just throw around words like 'hipster' at anyone who doesn't like the same over mass-marketed stuff they like. I don't like 20-somethings who make a big deal about how "mature" they are and who think it's "mature" to like exactly whatever things they like. Irony is they don't see exactly how immature they're being having that attitude. I also don't like people who can't keep their emotions in check so it's like walking on eggshells talking with them because they're emotionally unstable and prone to temper tantrums. No thanks. So yes any users who match any of the above are users I don't tend to like very much."

What is your opinion about the forums? Is there one forum that you prefer? And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

NeonSpider:

"The forums are pretty good as far as Internet forums go. Years ago there used to be lots of very active Internet forums but in recent years they're few and far between. So Newgrounds is doing pretty good comparatively speaking. Yes it's not as active as in the past, but compare that to the literal thousands of ghost town forums out there and the hundreds of less active forums, and it's actually very much alive and kicking. I don't think it's going to die out anytime soon; let's just say that.

I think you should interview Feoric because his political views are pretty spot on and he seems like a quite intelligent sort."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

NeonSpider:

"Some of the moderators are better than others I think. Honestly sometimes the moderation doesn't make much sense to me and it seems like posts or topics are locked or deleted at random sometimes, while people who are clearly causing problems are allowed to continue. I would just say enforcement seems really inconsistent."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

NeonSpider:

"I guess if they wanted me to be a moderator I'd consider it. Otherwise it's not really something I'd go out of my way for. If I was a moderator I'd be a bit tougher on flamers and troublemakers and ignore the harmless stuff. There are some users who seem to only cause problems."

The first console you owned was the Commodore VIC-20. What kind of games did you have for it? If you compare games from this console/time to games from this generation, what has in general improved and gotten worse in your opinion?

NeonSpider:

"Well it wasn't mine but was my dad's but I played it. There were programmed games you could play as it had a keyboard and also a joystick and you could actually make games for it yourself if you were so inclined. There were also cartridge games for it, which tended to be higher quality than the other games. Probably my favorite game was Demon Attack, which was kind of like Space Invaders but with more interesting kinds of aliens which had different abilities.

As you know, I generally prefer older games. I would say gaming went downhill sometime in the 2000s. My favorite systems are NES, SNES, GameBoy, and DOS. I think more modern games just appeal to a completely different kind of person from what the older games did, which is why there's such a divide between oldschool and newschool gamers. Older games focused mostly on personal skill and in many cases were intentionally difficult, but nowadays games focus more on teamwork, chance, time/money investment, and so forth but not as much on individual skill. They're nowadays made so that just about anyone can beat them and concentration is on graphics and storyline moreso than gameplay. Obviously there are exceptions to this, and obviously a site like Newgrounds does have people who make games that still have an oldschool feel and difficulty to them. In short, most newer games are far too easy for someone who has mastery of oldschool games, if they even have a skill component at all."

The Simpsons is one of your most favourite animated sitcoms. When did you start watching? What are your 3 favourite episodes and characters from the show?

NeonSpider:

"I started watching the Simpsons right from the very beginning when it was just a short on the Tracey Ullman Show, although I only saw some of those shorts. For a long time from the first regular season onwards, I'd seen every single episode but I haven't kept up with it for a few years now so I'm unfamiliar with perhaps newer season episodes.

Three favorite episodes? Well my absolute favorite episode is the one where Homer goes to New York and has to keep running between the twin towers for various reasons and has a bad time with it. Unfortunately it's also a banned-from-TV episode due to it featuring the twin towers, even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the disaster that happened later. I think that's a real shame since it was the best episode, in my opinion. Second favorite I guess would be one of the Halloween episodes where Snowball II and Santa's Little Helper go into a fusion machine and come out with a two-headed catdog that Bart claims as his pet, and a two-assed catdog butt thing hybrid which he says can be Lisa's. Third favorite, I'm not sure. I guess I'll go with their trip to Japan. I liked the part with the Chinese dragon and they thought it was a costume but it was actually a real dragon tearing up everything and the locals had to fight it and somehow it was a Chinese dragon even though they were in Japan, among other things. Also the Hello Kitty factory that fed on real live cats to operate.

Three favorite Simpsons characters is going to be a toughie because there are so many good characters. The characters are what made that show so good! I'm going to pick Groundskeeper Willie, Snake, and Moe. Although you also have great characters like Barney, Apu, Seymore Skinner, Ralph, Professor Frink, Comic Book Store Guy, Otto, Mr. Burns, and so on and so forth. It's just a really great fictional world with lots of great characters really."

You mentioned that you like Daft Punk. What do you like about their music and which of their songs do you like the most?

NeonSpider:

"I like a wide variety of music from a wide variety of genres. You can probably find something from just about any genre that I like although some genres I like moreso than others. I tend to like music which experiments a bit or which has a different sound from other stuff that's already out there. And I think Daft Punk fits. I'm not sure I really like any one of their songs moreso than others. I definitely like variety and if I had to hear the same song all the time I'd grow to hate it and, in fact, it has happened before with good songs that other people overplayed. I never just listen to the same song over and over and variety is definitely good. I would say I don't like Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger as much as any of their other songs simply because it's been way overplayed.

It's probably better to pick a random song from a great band/group/artist and give it a listen, rather than just keep listening to the same song over and over."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

NeonSpider:

"Everyone has secrets, yes. There's definitely stuff I'm not going to tell. I would say no one person truly knows me as they each know some about me but no one has the full picture although some people might think they do but they couldn't be more wrong. I've had stuff happen you likely wouldn't believe. I'm also very good at keeping my mouth shut on certain issues. I'll opt to tell something people likely didn't know rather than a secret. I once stayed up three whole days and nights with literally zero sleep."

What can we expect from you in the future, NeonSpider?

NeonSpider:

"Don't expect anything. Expectations lead to disappointment. But there's a possibility I might contribute content at some point if I feel like it. So there's a possiblity you might see some games or movies at some point, but don't hold your breath on it."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user vannila-guerilla.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username vannila-guerilla?

vannila-guerilla:

"I was in the 8th grade. I kid I went to school with named Chuck told me about it. This was roughly 12 years ago. I started actually using it my freshman year, but didn't actually join until 2006. It took me a few years to create an account. Why my username? There's really no reason. It's mispelled, though."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

vannila-guerilla:

"Well, yes. Don't we all, though?"

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

vannila-guerilla:

"I usually don't notice the users I like too much. I have PM'ed Timmy a few times and chatted with him. They don't really affect me, though."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

vannila-guerilla:

"No, but there are a few users that do annoy me."

And is there another forum user that you want to see getting interviewed by me?

vannila-guerilla:

"I usually use just the general section and video games. Politics gets a bit too cutthroat for me, but I get in there sometimes. I try to avoid negativity, though. That's part of the reason why."

Do you think that they do a great job or not?

vannila-guerilla:

"I think they don't, to be honest. I mean, most do, but the fact is sometimes they aren't strict enough, but they used to be too strict. I guess they haven't found too much of a happy medium."

If so, what kind of moderator?

vannila-guerilla:

"Yes. I would proudly abuse my authority."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign.

vannila-guerilla:

"I didn't care about the redesign too much. A lot of people made a big deal out of it. I do remember it adding on a ton of new emoticons, though. That I liked."

What do you like and what is not so good?

vannila-guerilla:

"By the time the 2012 redesign rolled around I kind of got used to the idea of websites redesigning their appearance. Does it suck when they do it? A little, but I realized it wasn't the end or the world, or anything too special."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I am pretty sure that you are a fan of the band Motorhead. Which of their songs do you like the most? Have you ever seen them live in concert? If so, talk about this experience.

vannila-guerilla:

"Yes, I am. My Twitter banner shows that. My favorite songs of their's are "Overkill" and "Born to Raise Hell." I also like "Iron Horse/Born to Lose" a lot. I have never seen them live, but I almost did in Tucson once. I just couldn't get out to go."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You have your own Youtube channel where you recently started uploading videos with you talking about certain topics. How did you get the idea to start doing those videos and which topics would you like to adress in the future?

vannila-guerilla:

"I mostly just vlog about my opinions on the supernatural, religion, and science. I'm a huge skeptic, so those are the topics I like to talk about, but I also realize I'm not the greatest when it comes to editing or being prepared. One topic I want to touch on, though, is the anti-vaccine movement. I'm shocked I haven't actually said much about them, yet."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Seems like you are a wrestling fan. When did you start watching wrestling and which wrestlers were your favourites back then? Which currently active wrestlers do you like the most?

vannila-guerilla:

"Yes, and my Twitter is usually blown up talking about wrestling on Monday nights. I wouldn't even know where to begin with all of this. My dad watched it when I was a kid. I picked it up from there. This was the early 90's, but I don't remember too much, since I was a kid. I do remember Stone Cold wrestling Vince McMahon on RAW, and I remember Shawn Michaels bringing out a little person impersonating Bret Hart on RAW one night. To be honest, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, and Stone Cold are my 3 favorites from the past. Currently I'm a big fan of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Daniel Bryan. I've grown fond of technical wrestling and high flyers, I guess."

Back in 2007, you mentioned that one of your favourite movies is Interview with the Vampire. Tell my readers what you like about this movie.

vannila-guerilla:

"I just loved the fact that it took a bold turn in the vampire genre. Instead of a vampire being a heartless villain they were given a bit more life. They weren't just one dimensional bad-guys that you know are only out to suck blood and kill. They had flavor. They had personalities you could sink your teeth into, and you could relate with them. I think that spin makes it a better movie than most critics give it credit for. For that matter, I really liked the 1991 Dracula movie as well for the same reasons."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

vannila-guerilla:

"I guess I do have secrets, but if I told you they wouldn't be secrets. That, and I can't think of any off hand. I major in history at a university in Illinois. I guess I haven't brought that up."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, vannila-guerilla?

vannila-guerilla:

"Hopefully more forum posts, and maybe I'll finally get around to purchasing Flash and teaching myself how to animate. I'd really like to write scripts for animators here and do some voice acting. So far, no luck."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Deshiel.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the Deshiel?

Deshiel:

"I think that it was in late half of 2007 when I was searching for DOOM 3 mod soundtrack, that was created by one of the early users and my search has brought me to Newgrounds. I came here with the intention to grab the soundtrack and leave, but then I discovered the true nature of this site that showed me what Newgrounds can provide and I decided to stay."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Why did you join?

Deshiel:

"I've finaly registered to the site when I aquired Dance E-jay music software that enabled me to make my first music from pre-recorded samples. It was nowhere as cool as working with Fruity Loops, but I was really into it back then. Suddently I wanted to make music like the other guys on the site, but my primary mission was to create action packed music for my gaming sessions. So in the beginning I didn't care about other people on Newgrounds and I didn't even socialise with anyone at the time and Newgrounds was nothing more than a place to browse for awesome music and to store my own."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Why did you choose the username Deshiel?

Deshiel:

"This name was created long before my arrival on Newgrounds and it served as my secondary Gaming nickname. It has evolved from my secondary name into my primary one and now I'm using it nearly everywhere I go.
The conception happened when I wanted to chose a more "mature" nickname, because I was often mocked by the gaming community for having an asian nickname Akimaru. So because I wanted to be absolutely original when it came to my own nickname. So, one night when I was watching the TV show The shield, I really liked how it sounded when I pronounced it "THE SHIELD!" so I grabed my pen and wrote the word on a piece of paper. There I tried to come up with some nickname that would sound similar but be absolutely different, thus original. It only took me few minutes to write down the nickname we all know and love, DESHIEL. Because the way english or american people pronounce the word THE is exactly how we pronounce the letter D, I transformed THE into D shiel and then addet the e between D and S to make a connection."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Do you think that you changed over the time you were here, as user, or also in real life?

Deshiel:

"Yes, I believe that I am a whole different person now than I was before, but mainly because I was far younger and less commited to anything I do. I started here as an absolute loner who didn't need anything or anyone, but as I progressed in the field of music I started to feel the need to reach out and talk with the other users about our common interests.

I've gathered a great ton of friends here who have left alittle piece of themselves and thier ideals in me and I believe that I've done the same thing to them."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

Deshiel:

"I've met way too many artists over the years so I do not remember everyone, but nearly every one of them has left thier mark on me with either thier music or thier personality. Because I am a huge metal fan, I always admired the work of Bad-Man-Incorporated, Lasmush, Xenogenocide, Evil-Dog and many more which I'm really strugling to remember.

But that was just metal and rock. Next two guys who I consider to be my personal legends were Genjo and Chromatronic. Their interpretation of electronic music was so special to me that I downloaded nearly everything they had and they inspired me to do something similar to thier kin. Neither one of them seemed to be very popular in the Audio Portal, but they were awesome for me.

Pretty much everytime I felt that something cannot be done, someone would pop up and show me otherwise. Two greatest examples of this were Wandschrank and Bacon92, both of them were my mentors and I still look up to them with great respect. One last mention should go to PeterSatera, who I felt was right where I wanted to be in the future.
He was able to combine electronic music with classical instruments to create some action packed cinematic music and he became my Idol and source of inspiration ever since I met him."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

Deshiel:

"Yes there are several users that I do not like, but I do not want to name them, because I would have to deal with them again later and I want to stay way from them forever. But yes, this is an Audio Portal housing thousands of different personalities and thus there is always the chance that we will met someone who will make our blood boil. It happened and will probably happen again in the future, We cannot be friends with everyone, but we should value the friendships that we have."

Deshiel:

"I absolutely love the freedom of content in this forum. If you follow the rules, you can pretty much discuss anything you want. Lately I've discovered that the general forum is a great source of fun when you are too lazy to do anything else."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

Deshiel:

"I do not have any opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds because I am not in any way associated with any of them. The current moderators are people that I find no interest in so they are complete strangers to me. I guess that they do what they wanted to do, because every single one of them probably asked for it."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Deshiel:

"If I were a moderator, I would be an audio moderator of course, but that should never happen because I would be relentless and uncompromising Jedi killer and I would be eventualy depowered by the higher mods for my lack of compassion and sympathy."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

Deshiel:

"The current design completely killed off my efforts to browse for random and awesome music on my own. Nowadays I'm only listening to the stuff the people that I follow make, but that was the master plan of this design anyway.
I really do like the rest of the features that enabled me to connect even more with the rest of the community however, but that loss of acces to awesome content was really devastating for me, because browsing for music in the old design was easy as eating a cake and very rewarding. Now you you can only browse for something that is popular based on views or score and that is really sad, because most of the awesome stuff I liked in the old design was somewhere inbetween."

With well over 400 submissions, you are not only one of the most popular but also most active audio artists on Newgrounds. When did you start making music? Which of your early tracks do you like the most?

Deshiel:

"I started making music when I was 12 but those early attempts were really bad because I didn't know what I was doing and I didn't really have the drive for improvement back then. I was too lazy to go and study so most of my early Fruity Loops sessions were just me hitting few notes and then shutting down the software, because I did want to make music, but I didn't want to learn. My favorite track from my early production would be {techno#battle}.

When I was making this track, my knowledge of Fuity Loops was so poor that I didn't even know how to use piano roll or the basic Playlist editor. All I used was the Sequencer so the whole track was manualy recorded and copied to other sytrus presets to add diversion. The whole melody of that track was recorded in one session, so there are certain moments when the melody is suddently going downhill because I didn't know what to do, but a grave mistake would mean that I would have to record everything over again."

Overall, what do you like and dislike about the Newgrounds Audio Portal in comparison to other platforms like Soundcloud? Which changes would you like seeing implented in the future?

Deshiel:

"As I understand it, Soundcloud is a place for unsigned producers to wave for attention, while Newgrounds Audio Portal is a place for flash games/video designers to browse for music. Seriously, the original aspiration of the Audio Portal was nowhere near the goal that Soundcloud has established for the user. It was the never satiated greed of the attention seeking people that Newgrounds Audio Portal was transformed more into a place to show off rather than provide.

I like the both sites respectively and I do not want them to mix up too much, because then I would lose the need of one of them. I do however want some system that would count the total of views and download of every sing entry that I made."

One thing that makes you stand out as audio artist is that you compose songs for a large variety of genres. Which genres do you find most enjoyable to produce?

Deshiel:

"I am still very passionate when it comes to Rock & Metal, but I do not own the necessary gear to make music like Bad-Man-Incorporated and etc. Also I am very eager to combine electronic music with heavy guitars.
I've also began to invest in more cinematic aproach to my music, because I would like to score some stuff in the future.

Basically I want to be the guy that can make everything, but I cannot say that I do much to achieve my goals, because I am a very lazy composer. :) I like dark and disturbing music and some of my pieces are influenced by that more than I want to. I had a lot of fun while creating duel of two robots and zetsubou no owari, so I guess that I realy enjoy creating action packed/emd tinted cinematic music. :D"

You sometimes play Star Wars: The Old Republic. Which aspects of this game do you enjoy the most? When did you become a fan of the Star Wars franchise? Are you looking forward to the upcoming Star Wars movie?

Deshiel:

Star Wars: The Old Republic is the only MMO that managed to captivate me for years. I cannot say that I am a diehard fan, but I do love the universe of Star Wars. I did not read any of the books but I played lots of games from the Star Wars universe. So Because I am also a huge fan of Bioware, which is responsible for KOTOR 1 and Mass Effect. I was like mega excited to play SWTOR, because to me it has delivered what it had promised. It puts your chosen character into numerous situations which you have to deal with by using choices that you want. By now I reached level 55 with nearly every class aside from the smuggler and jedi knight, but I still absolutely love to watch MY Star Wars characters in the cutscenes.

Yes I do look foward to see the new Star Wars movie, but I am little bit scared that it will end up being something entirely different from the past six. The aquisition of Lucasarts by disney plays a great deal in my fear."

Seems like you are a fan of Game of Thrones. Tell my readers what you like about the show in general. Which characters do you like the most and why?

Deshiel:

"What I absolutely love about the show is the realism of violence and human nature. Humans are mean and we all have to learn about that sooner or later. I find the story and the endless amount of plots very compeling and I can't wait to see more. I also liked the sex in the series, well aside from the incest adventures of Cersei & Jaime, that was a shocker for my whole family, because we are all fans of game of thrones and sometimes we watch the series together. Also, swordfights, awesome swordfights!

I really like Jon Snow and Arya Stark, because they are both badass, but I'm also starting to grow fond of Jaime and Tyrion. Oberyn Was a great dude but he didnt last long."

Deshiel:

What can we expect from you in the future, Deshiel?

"Improvement and perhaps a contest or two, because I am not going to leave Newgrounds anytime soon. :)"

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user FinaLee.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username FinaLee?

FinaLee:

"Gosh, I can't even remember when I first came across Newgrounds. I was around 10 or 11 and those Assassin games were the highlight of the site at the time. Me and my longtime friend (and now current roommate) had a very immature hatred for the Pokémon franchise. After Googling "Pokémon sucks," I found my way onto one of these games, and it was one of the most insane things I had ever seen for my age. From then on, I would infrequently check to see the latest animation and games until around 2008, when I made my first account. I've since forgotten the password to that one, so I made FinaLee. And it wasn't until this year when I would start posting on the BBS.

I chose FinaLee because I was listening to "Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz and Del the Funky Homosapien's first line in the track is "Finally, someone let me out of my cage." And I always liked how he said the word. My name is also Lee. I thought it was a good idea at the time."

FinaLee:

"I'd like to think I've changed a lot since last week! When I first made this account, I was a very quiet and awkward person, with not many people to relate to. Since then, I've blossomed a lot and have been more outgoing. I've made a lot of mistakes along the way, but I feel they were necessary in becoming a better person. You kind of have a vague image in your head of what you want to be like, and I'm making strides to realize the image of a person who helps other people. I've found it takes a lot of trial and error.

As a user, I haven't been active on this account much before May, but I try to let it reflect my personality as much as possible. I dick around a lot, but I've also made the effort to give my insight on things that I feel I need to address seriously."

FinaLee:

"There's too many to name. I also feel like if I name one person, I'm placing them on a pedestal while dissing the other users I forgot to mention, you know? I feel it kind of puts me and them in an awkward situation, so I tend to not think about favorites, but instead like and dislike. I've been inspired by a lot of people in the Audio Portal to become a better musician, and I can definitely say I've improved a lot since five years ago."

FinaLee:

"I only know one person here outside of Newgrounds, and we've been friends long before then. It's kind of hard to not like someone you've never met before. Some people argue that what you say online defines your personality, which I'm inclined to agree with, but I wouldn't say it's absolute. I don't think I've even been mad at someone on here."

FinaLee:

"Love the community. People can get a little too cynical at times, but I always have a fun time. I tend to stick around in General and get a bunch of good laughs out of the silliness there. I also sometimes lurk the Audio Forums, but everybody seems to be wrapped up in some contests over there lately. They do provide some helpful information that I didn't know, like producing your tracks in mono before going stereo. I also check the other forums from time to time to see if there's an interesting thread going on.

If I could nominate another person to be interviewed, I think Cabbster would be an interesting one. TheGamechanger would also probably be a hilarious read. Be sure to ask him a ton of questions about Tron."

FinaLee:

"I think they do a pretty good job keeping the place free of bad content and poor threads. Some of the potentially funny threads I think get locked a little too early, but it is what it is. I mean, they're just as capable of fucking up as anyone else is. I've never had a run-in with one."

FinaLee:

"You know, if you had asked this like two months ago, I would have thought it would be pretty cool to be an audio moderator, because every now and then I would see some rulebreaking music slip through the cracks. Lately though, the place has been pretty clean.

I don't really know what the process is, but I don't think I would go out of my way to ask to become one. If they need one, I'd gladly accept if asked, but it wouldn't really matter if there wasn't anything to moderate, huh?"

FinaLee:

"I like it for the most part. I've grown so accustomed to it, I hardly remember what the older design looked like, and I've almost forgotten what the one before that one looked like. I think the navigation could be simplified a little bit more, especially when we're talking about the rules page. I felt I had to do a little digging to find it when I first came across the redesign. Also, I just don't like the color brown. Black? Cool. Orange? Sure. But fucking brown. Ugh."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

A few months ago you spent your vacation in New Hampshire. Talk about this experience and what you like the most about this place.

FinaLee:

"Every year, I meet up with my family and other relatives to hike one of the Presidential Mountains, usually Mount Washington. It's always a fun experience, because I usually don't get the time to see any of my relatives. None of us really have a passion for hiking, and most of us certainly don't enjoy the trek going up, especially when it snows, but we sort of take enjoyment out of not enjoying it, you know? On a clear day, you get some of the most scenic views at the top, which is pretty cool for a Florida boy who doesn't have so much as a speed bump where he lives.

There's also a live folk/bluegrass band that plays during the night, so if I have any energy left, I get to bust out my mean square-dancing skills with the ladies. Definitely my favorite part of the night. Then I get to sleep in a bunk with a bunch of other sweaty dudes who snore like a pack of angry bears. Always a fun experience."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You submitted your first track to the audio portal in 2009 and most recently released the song Losing A Draw. What inspired you to start making music? Will we see more songs from you in the future?

FinaLee:

"I think being exposed to music at an early age is what inspired me to get into the art. It used to be almost exclusively metal, but I've since branched out and have learned to appreciate all styles of music. I still remember that closet full of tapes and CDs that almost threatened to topple over if you opened the door too quickly. My first and so far only instrument of choice has been the guitar, although I was never serious about playing it until I listened to legends like Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert. As of now, I'd like to think that I'm an okay player, with still a lot to learn.

Losing a Draw was actually planned to be the beginning to a loosely woven story, and I still have the next chapter crafted in my head, but I've since put that idea on the backburner in lieu of a new project I plan to finish sometime hopefully soon, certainly before Halloween."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Thundercats was your favourite cartoon series when you were younger. Tell my readers what the show is about and what you like about it.

FinaLee:

"Thundercats is about a group of anthropomorphic cats called the Thunderians who have fled from their home planet to another world called Third Earth. The leader of the Thunderians, Lion-O, has a powerful sword called the Sword of Omens, which the Mutants, their sworn enemies, seek to possess. Mumm-Ra, a powerful demon priest and inhabitant of Third Earth, forms an alliance with the Mutants in order to acquire the Sword of Omens and eliminate the Thundercats.

I've always liked these 80's shows because I thought they were the epitome of everything hair metal. Big, muscular, but somewhat feminine looking dudes with long hair fighting with swords and whatnot. When I was a kid, I thought that that was what it meant to be cool."

In July you started to volunteer at a planetarium. Talk about what you do there and which aspects of working there fascinate you.

FinaLee:

"Since the later years of high school, I've taken up a great interest in astrophysics. Now that I'm lucky enough to be in a college that has its own planetarium, there was no way that I could pass up the opportunity to volunteer. The great thing about planetariums is that you are helping people learn a little bit more about science while at the same time making it a fun experience.

When you volunteer, your basic job is to just make sure that nobody fucks up anything in the exhibit and that everybody who goes into the planetarium or theater has actually paid to get in. For most days, it's smooth sailing, but every now and then there's always that little kid who want to mess with the Foucault pendulum or crank the Van Der Graaf generator past its threshold."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

FInaLee:

"Okay, not really a secret, but I take a great interest in the sport of bodybuilding. I haven't been nearly as active in the gym anymore, and for that I'm as skinny as a twig now, but hopefully after I get other things taken care of I can return to my hobby. I'm assuming that by the time this interview goes up, the Mr. Olympia is over and hopefully Kai Greene won. If not, I'm sure it went to Phil Heath again."

FinaLee:

"More forum posting and more music! I have a couple of tracks in the works titled "Hallucinations" and "Beggars," so be sure to keep your radios dialed and stay tuned!""

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user D-Nightmare.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username _Spawn_ and why did you change it to D-Nightmare?

D-Nightmare:

"This all happened while I was a huge fan of Soul Calibur 2, also during that era of Newgrounds when underscores and dashes could be put into usernames. After seeing the comic book character Spawn's appearance in one version of SC2, I wanted to base my username off of him. Moreover, someone had already taken the name "Spawn" (without underscores), so I improvised.

Later on, I changed it to D-Nightmare because I wanted to avoid having potentially demonic imagery with my username, since Spawn got his powers through dealing with the devil. In any case, I decided to use the character Nightmare instead because he was my main character in SC2, mostly because of how easy he is to use and how popular he is with many players.

As for the letter “D” in my username, that originally stood for “Der-Nightmare”, as a reference to the Rammstein song “Der Meister”. I saw a video of a live performance of the song, which struck a chord with me; enough to change my name, and make a reference that I hoped people would catch. Over time, I noticed that that didn't work, so I decided to simplify it to my current username, making it roll off of the tongue more easily and having a decent ring to it."

D-Nightmare:

“Yes, I have changed considerably over the time that I've been here (11/28/2004 – 08/25/2014), with respect to both Newgrounds and my personal character in the real world. When I first signed up, I thought that joining Newgrounds would make me automatically cooler on that principle alone.
I soon found out that actual achievements would have to come first before I would earn any respect at all, such as making full use of depositing leaving helpful reviews. Later on, I became familiar with the Blam/Save system, the other sections of the site besides the Games; TomFulp's games, with their emphasis on gameplay and quirky humor, especially caught my attention.

Over time, I would obsess over how people thought about me. This came to a peak between '05-'06, when I was most active on the Forums. That's a part of my life that I've long since left behind, in favor of just being myself. Back then, I would try and imitate some of what the populars would do, trying too hard to get a reply out of the authors of different movies and games, being a try-hard on the Forums in order to get some kind of reply that would boost my ego, being socially abrasive to other users, be a show off about the things in my life (mostly by lying), and saying unrepeatable things that would make a Gen X-er shake his head in shame.

Nowadays, I put no stock in other people's opinions of me. I do my best to not make false assumptions about other users, so that they're not overhyped and drawing attention that they're not interested in seeking, nor drawing that kind of attention that would result them in getting picked on. That's because what they think about what might be spread around subjectively true is not necessarily what is objectively true, since anyone can learn a lot of information about someone, but not know them at all. In that case, a free gift of the heart form one to another, with due discretion, is in order. In other words, I went from looking out solely for myself and overhyping some of the big names on here to looking on the brighter side of things and bearing in mind that my merits benefit on how well I treat other people."

Are there any other users that you like, and how do they affect you?

D-Nightmare:

"I'm pretty fond of some users here, yeah. I like Sense-Offender, since he has communicated with me in the past a number of times, and he makes some pretty cool posts that we both can relate to. The same goes for Viper and Urban-Champion. Another users that comes to mind is WadeFulp. Since he's pretty consistent about the site's rules, is fantastic with follow-up, and is a pretty friendly guy."

Are there any users that you would consider enemies or that you just don't like?

D-Nightmare:

"No enemies come to mind. Also, disliking someone is a thing I only save for someone who does something truly contemptible, but I'd still be good and civil to them in spite of it. I don't make it a point to have enemies on NG, plus I've noticed that a lot of users don't take things all that seriously."

D-Nightmare:

"I think that the forums of today are better than in recent years, mostly because every other topic is not only not some discussion about sex, but also because there's a pretty good assortment of topics. When there are topics with interesting news stories, questions about the little things in life that strike a chord, or something as simple as a good photoshop thread."

I guess that you have an opinion about the moderators of Newgrounds. Do you think that they do a great job or not?

D-Nightmare:

"I think so. There aren't a lot of threads that break the rules these days, not to mention fewer trolls. I sometimes wonder whether more users leave if the mods started to get super-strict."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

D-Nightmare:

"In my better judgment, the only good answer to that is if Wade decides that I'm fit to be a moderator, whether it's for the forums or for reviews. If I were appointed, I would thank him for the honor and be a strictly by-the-book kind of moderator, making sure that things go harmoniously through consistent application of the rules, having a good relationship with the other mods, and not and being connected with users. As a side-note, I look at stafffighter's example as sources of inspiration for the way that I'd be a mod, mostly because I like how stafffighter offers good commentary on fun stuff and is helpful on pointing out a better direction on where to go with a difficult topic of discussion, plus he's fairly quick to catch on to when a topic gets out of hand. I'd like to be at least that good.

You were a member before the redesign 2007. Tell me how you experienced Newgrounds back then and what changes you liked about the redesign.

D-Nightmare:

"Hah, that was back when NG had the slogan “The Problems of the Future Today!”. Users have already covered some of the more obvious ones like the spam groups and “Turd of the Week”, so I'll discuss a few other ways that the site was different. There was a lot more focus on lampooning pop culture than now, plus in-person parties were much more common, and NG was literally the summit of all sites involving cartoons and games. All those are pros, but one con that was always involved was that this site couldn't be browsed through for long due to malware constantly coming unscrupulous advertisers that Newgrounds used to host; having antivirus software was not an option.

Also, profiles had jet-black backgrounds, appeared only in pop-ups, and were much more cramped. As soon as the marquee “IN UR TANK. UPGRADING UR FEATURES” showed up just before the '07 redesign was fully implemented, I was taken off guard. When it gave way to the end result, I took it as a breath of fresh air."

The last redesign happened 2012. Tell me what you think about it. What do you like and what is not so good?

D-Nightmare:

"Performance-wise, it's fantastic. The site runs pretty smoothly even with the ads, plus the most popular and highest-rated games and movies from it's different categories are easier to search for. Aesthetically, I like the staff's idea of using some of the best artwork of different artists to mix things up a bit, but the graphics in the interface and buttons make things too busy for the eyes and are in need of streamlining. Having the interface rounded-off a little bit, as opposed to the strictly squared-off look, would be nice."

Seems like you are a big fan of the games Castle Crashers and BattleBlock Theater. Which aspects of them do you like the most? Are you looking forward to the next game release from The Behemoth?

D-Nightmare:

"In both cases, I like how the Behemoth puts accessible yet challenging gameplay before graphics and sophistication, making up a good chunk of the technical part of things work. In other ways, the art style and quirky humor helps to keep things interesting. I think that the best way demonstrate how they do it is with the Pudding Monster from Alien Hominid, where players fight something that our inner child might think up, disposing of it in a common-sense way with a fire hydrant."

Venom is your favourite Marvel character. What do you you think about his portrayal in Spider Man 3? Would you like to see a movie where he has a more prominent role?

D-Nightmare:

"Venom was my favorite at the time, mostly due to the anticipation behind Spider-Man 3, and how well he was written and portrayed in the 1994 animated series' 3-part story called “Alien Costume”. With that kind of clout, along with Topher Grace's eagerness to play the character, my teenage mind was looking for a lot in his portrayal in Spider-Man 3. I think that Topher Grace did deliver pretty well with what he was given, but it was less than 30 minutes or so of screen time, plus two other villians were crammed into the same film, making the whole thing so uneven that fans of the Raimi films would prefer a proper follow up in his style instead of Marc Webb's “Amazing Spider-Man” series.

My favorite character now is Captain America, not simply because I'm an American, but because he himself is compelled to work toward higher standers of personal character and leadership. Short, simple, and to the point with honest to goodness Marvel ideals and quality."

Rocko's Modern Life is your favourite cartoon. Tell my readers what you like about the show.

D-Nightmare:

"Haha, I'd love to. My main draw toward this series in the tongue-in-cheek approach, giving off a signature '90s vibe while cracking jokes and making references that are relatable to kids or adults. After all, garbage day is a very dangerous day. Also, a surreal and parodic adventure through a giant supermarket's 99% off sale is something any middle-class kid should experience if he wants to understand the need to live on a budget a bit more bearable because cartoons are a great way to appeal to wide audiences in that way."

You are a fan of ice hockey, especially the team Detroit Red Wings. When did you start watching this sport and what was the most exciting match you saw?

D-Nightmare:

"I remember watching this with my family around 1997, around the time that the Stanley Cup playoffs were near an end. Already being familiar with rivalry at that point, seeing the spirit of competition that the Wings players had, along with feeling the hype surrounding the whole thing, kind of set things in motion for my passion for sports in general because hockey is objectively more fun to watch than any other sport. What other sport can make the most out of playing either on ice or in the street, playable with official gear or with whatever's lying around in one's closet?"

People who wonder how much I weigh normally don't believe it when I tell them my actual weight, with the actual figure being around 10 lbs (4.5 kg) more than what they figure. I never make any real effort in doing this, yet it's something that surprises even my doctor."

D-Nightmare:

"Better and more interesting posts, plus someone who likes to be generous. I would like to submit something to any one of the portals, but school and work takes precedence. Not sure which of the three will come first, but they're all something that I'd like to do. In any case, I'm going to make contributions that won't be a waste of time."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user SubliminalVirus.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username SubliminalVirus?

SubliminalVirus:

"I used this site just for the games when I was twelve for two years or so, but then just forgot about it. I discovered this site once again recently and it looked like a site full of great artists, many who I could learn a lot from. It's nice to see so many people's work, I'm really glad I joined. About the username, I've always been really interested in both psychology and disease, so I just took one of my favorite topics from each interest and combined it."

SubliminalVirus:

"I like all of the users that I chat with and can joke with, however I think the one with the most affect was one of the first users I talked to, WahyahRanger, I think joking around with him is what keep my interest in the forums, leading me to meet other users."

SubliminalVirus:

"I like Newgrounds as a way to distract me from stress in real life, I'd rather not argue with other users or have any sort of negative drama. So I don't think I have any enemies here, however there are just a few users that rub me the wrong way, but it's just what's to be expected when on any website were many users communicate."

SubliminalVirus:

"They are nice, many people get help and critics from forums while others express their opinion or just goof around. I dabble around in the art and video games forums but I use the General Forum more than any other, mostly because it's the forum that attracts most users and is most active. Hm, you've done so many users...Have you ever got an interview with TomFulp?"

SubliminalVirus:

"Well I haven't seen a lot of gore or illegal porn on the forums so I'd say they do a good job."

SubliminalVirus:

"I'm not actually sure, while it would be nice to help out with a site that I really like, it seems like a lot of responsibility, I would be too nervous of screwing up, but if I did then probably a forum moderator, just because I go on the forums so often."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

One of your favourite movies is A Serbian Film, which has a rather infamous reputation. What do you like about this movie?

SubliminalVirus:

"It rare for me to actually like a movie, because I don't have the best attention span. This movie actually managed to keep me engaged. I suppose most people just assume I like it for the violence and gore, but I actually liked the type of characters portrayed and how well it makes you follow the main character through his stress, mental and emotional strain while being manipulated, so while we do find hate for him we still have empathy. With the majority of movies I watch I just don't care about the characters, so it was like a breath of fresh air from guys in sunglasses with explosives and machine guns..."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You are an artist. When and why did you start drawing? How would you describe your own drawing style? What is so far the drawing that you are most proud of?

SubliminalVirus:

"More like a student. When I was little I just would constantly come up with stories and draw them out, so then I started going to art classes and became very fond of my teacher so I just went year after year, I'm actually still being taught by her. I think have yet to actually have my own style, all my drawing are more just practices and experiments, but I guess my favorite would be Slave since it was my very second painting after years of avoiding paint."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

David Firth is your favourite visual artist. Tell my readers what you like about his style.

SubliminalVirus:

"I like the dark nature of some of his animations and the cynical attitude of others. As well as how confused many of them can make you. He is a big role model of mine, after watching his animations I started practicing using animation software myself."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Aphex Twin is one of your most favourite musicians. Which of his songs do you like the most?

SubliminalVirus:

"Come To Daddy... Can't explain this too well, I don't normally like a lot of electronic music, but it has a really creepy feel about it, and it's music video is intriguing."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I can't get rid of the feeling that you are ... fascinated by clowns. What symbolic meaning do you attribute to them?

SubliminalVirus:

"I got to go to a circus just once when I was 6 or 7 and I remember the clowns act, it brought comedy to an otherwise serious act from the other performers, and made everyone happy... I like how different all clowns are, how different the acts that they adopt are and how many of them manage to combine different types of acts together, for example illusion along with the over the top acting that we expect from clowns. So I suppose happiness, laughter, entertainment. It can mean these things to me while still scaring the crap out of other people... perfect."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

You mentioned that you want to become a Forensic Psychologist in the future. Which aspects of this career interest you the most?

SubliminalVirus:

"Well I've been very interested in psychology since I can remember, however if I were to pursue a career in it I wouldn't want to be a therapist just sitting around and listening to other people's everyday problems. Considering that I also have been interested by crime from a young age, being a forensic psychologist would allow me to work with two major interests of mine. Once thing that stands out for me a lot is the chance to study people who have committed crimes and try to learn more about what pushed them to commit it, as well as what sort of state of mind they were in during the crime itself."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

SubliminalVirus:

"Gee, I think I'm pretty open already in the forums. One thing that I haven't mentioned is that I was in my second or third year of lifesaving courses before I just out of nowhere got a fear of being in a large body of water...even though swimming was once one of my favorite things to do. pretty stupid..."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

What can we expect from you in the future, SubliminalVirus?

SubliminalVirus:

"I wish I knew...."

Asandir's interviews with Newgrounds forum users

This week's interview features the user Lich.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

When did you find Newgrounds and why did you join? Why did you choose the username LichLordMusic and why did you change it to Lich?

Lich:

"I did try and join Newgrounds originally as just 'LichLord' but the name was sadly taken. So I just added the word music onto it and I was well away to slowly try and make more Electronic music as I found out back then it sounded better and took much less effort than dabbling with Sequenced Black Metal. I fondly remember uploading my first couple of tracks which I made on some cheapo Creative-branded speakers and a mouse (I still have my old Creative's, I mainly use them for playing music in the kitchen off of my phone when I'm cooking alone etc.).

Through thick and thin and following a bumpy road of progression, we come to this point today after almost 3 years on Newgrounds where I renamed myself to 'Lich'. The main reason for this is that 'Lich' sounded alot more memorable and I think better than 'LichLordMusic' as the majority of my listeners and online friends and collaborators come from Newgrounds and the rename made me think I could possibly try and fit in more with it done.

Lich:

"Most definitely! Talking with other users, getting constructive criticism on much needed pieces and seeing how other people behave and respond has definitely made a positive impression and has changed my behavior slightly. I'm still pretty crazy though for sticking with the genre of music I make and saying some of the stuff I do.
Te best part about sticking around with Newgrounds was the valuable and helpful information and methods which has bettered me as a musician (thank you to every which has helped me out so far through Forum posts and/or PM's!) Occasionally I do try and help out others by posting my own Constructive criticism or letting people know when there are Software deals currently running. I don't mind trying to share some helpful IT hints and solutions for people having issues. It's only fair I help others when I have been helped myself in the past."

Lich:

"I get on with most of the people I generally interact with, especially users such as Deshiel, KatMaestro, JRob, Cabbster and most of the audio regulars when I bother to post random bits in the Audio forum. The audio guys have been some of the most helpful and nicest people I have talked to on pretty much any forum despite any differences we may have.

For users I have seen post in multiple sub-forums, I do like most of the forum responses which NeonSpider, Rahmemhotep, SubliminalVirus and a few others I've kind of forgotten about make. Hopefully with more time I should get to know more people better and I muight actually bother to participate in the Newgrounds IRC channel one day."

Lich:

"Not really, there isn't anyone who currently gives off that kind of feeling. It's no secret to a few people I have had big disagreements with a few users whom I shall not name but eventually we all kiss & make-up per say and get on with life as usual. 99% of the time it's pretty much my fault anyway for overblowing a situation so I'd like to think that after learning some more self-control and thinking about hidden and subtle meanings towards worded responses that I may actually make my responses abit more diplomatic and less hostile if I think someone is pushing my buttons unintentionally per say.

I'm not impressed by some of the other regulars responses in both the General forum and Political forum for some of the more sensetive topics being posted though. I don't want to intervene and start off a flame-war over such topics and I shall not name some of the users who seem to repeatedly do this but it's prett difficult to make another person change their opinions altogether in a few lines. 'Why fight an uphill battle' is what I usually say myself when I see posts like that and then I usually close my tab and dive back into my sequencer instead."

Lich:

"The forums on Newgrounds seem to inflict the right balance. 'General' pretty much exists as the 'post-about-almost-anything' domain and it isn't afraid to burn users over rampant stupidity or ridiculous notions. The other sub-forums seem like little pockets full of helpful individuals and valuable resource waiting to be discovered and utilised. I'm especialy fond of the Audio forum despite the slower activity it seems to have compared to one or two of the other more popular sub-forums.

Interview-wise, I think Deshiel would be an interesting Musician to interview since he has been hanging around on Newgrounds since 2008 and has uploaded 468 audio submissions since he has been a member on Newgrounds. Anchorwind or TheHeartgrinder are also very interesting and talented Electro-Industrial and Noise musicians whom I would also strongly recommend interviews for, some of their uplaoded work sounds insane!"

Lich:

"I think out of all of the Moderators I have seen on the forums, I have only ever been unimpressed with one Mod whom has now been de-modded (yes I'm talking about a certain one whom some of you may know threatened bans to users live on the Newgrounds Pico Day Live-stream. Sorry dude but you didn't leave a very good first impression if you are reading this.) Other than that I have full confidence in the Forum, Audio, Art and other moderators as they seem to keep everything running very smoothly on Newgrounds and I would like to thank them in advance for volunteering their time to making Newgrounds a better place one small step at a time."

Would you like to become a moderator on Newgrounds? If so, what kind of moderator?

Lich:

"Moderating Newgrounds would be an honor and I think I could do a reasonable job but I personally don't think I would like it that much after awhile. There are many other users out there who I think are more deserving of such a position. In the case where I would be selected to try and moderate, an Audio or Forum moderator position would probably be more ideal for someone like me. But it's pretty much all wistful thinking if anything."

It seems like you built a few computers in the past. When did you build your first one? What would you consider the most difficult aspects of building a computer?

Lich:

"My first personal machine was built back in 2011, back then it was a pretty nice machine running on an AM3 chip-set equipped with a Phenom II T1100BE, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, an OCZ Agility 3 SSD, a Crosshair IV Formula AM3 motherboard and a be quiet! Dark Rocker Pro (The original) Air coller for the processor. Probably costed me around £1000 in parts back then and I was personally very happy with the system up until this year when it's age started to show trying to process some of my more FX-heavy tracks. It's pretty common for it to spike at 100% Usage on all 6 physical Cores and all of my reserved RAM to nearly be taken up as well. I've only just installed some Noctua PWM case fans into it after servere overheating issues became present after torturing the poor ol' thing after 3 years of heavy usage.
For other machines I have built, alot of them are bits for friends and colleagues. Nothing terribly expensive or complicated to build but I do offer to sort out some of the trickier bits for them like assembling and mounting large CPU coolers with weird mount brackets and systems and connecting their nice fancy Full/Semi Modular PSU's to the correct slots on the Motherboards.

Related to the IT work I do for the current company I work for, there isn't too much system building to sort out. I may occasionally swap out faulty parts provided by our OEM and fit low-profile graphics card in for users who request Dual-Screen setup's but other than that it's mainly imaging for our clients situation.

For my next system I am building I am going to wait for Intel to release their Xeon E5-2600 V3 series at the end of Q3 2014. Extra L3 cache and cores for all of the updated Xeon's at a rumored value to be the same as the current V2 series is definitely a plus. Probably going to try and grab the Xeon-E5 2630 V3 when it comes out and shove it on a good Supermicro or ASUS workstation board, shove in somewhere between 16/32 GB ECC Registered RAM, Crossfire two cheap ebay-acquired Firepro W5000's for non gaming GPU use, shove in a Platinum-Grade Full Modular Corsair PSU, maybe an LSI Raid card aswell, definitely an RME or ESI ASIO Soundcard as my potential audio solution's (Also toying with the idea of getting a UAD Solo-Core, you musicians out there, be envious :D ) and probably around 4 SSD's and two SSHD Backup drives to power the whole system and a Noctua NH-D15 and the case-fan equivalents to keep this monstrous sytem nice and cool. I could realistically build such a system for probably around £1700-£2000 depending on how cheap I could get the FIrepro's and the LSI Raid card for.
The most difficult part of a system I have ever seen to install would be a Custom-Loop water cooling system. if anyone asks me to sort one out for them the answer is going to be a flat out 'NO'. If it leaks I don't want to be held responsible."

Alghazanth is one of your favorite bands. What do you like about their style in general and what are your favourite songs?

Lich:

"Ahhhhhh, Algazanth! I mainly listen to and dabble with Electro-Industrial nowadays but Alghazanth will always remain to be my favorite Black Metal band all day. With Algazanth it's all about the songwriting and the beautiful atmosphere they give off in their music. The mastering for the tracks sounds just right, not clinically clean and not awful. Cutting out some of the low end and focusing on the sheer awesome tone and atmosphere their stuff projects was the best decision they have probably ever done. Their 2013 release 'The Three-Faced Pilgrim' is probably my all-time favorite from them although their 2008 release 'Wreath Of Thevetat' is a close second.

I'd say my top three tracks I like from them altogether (and urge Black-Metal enthusiasts to listen to) would be: 'To the Pearl on High', 'In Your Midnight Orchard' and 'On Blackening Soil'."

You are an audio artist. When did you start making music and what kind of music do you like creating the most? Which other Newgrounds audio artists are you a fan of, and would possible like to work together with in the future?

Lich:

"Back in 2011 when I first started out making Music, I kind of went through a phase where I wasn't completely as to what I should make and this also included re-branding my project name several times over. I first started off known as 'Lichhood' while I was first learning how to use FL Studio 9 and make a few tracks here and there. While they sound too horrible to ever post online now (except one track I'll mention shortly) back them I was pretty amazed that I could make anything at all in a sequencer. It was a pretty good time and I couldn't wait to see how I could progress from here. Around September 2011 I done my first track upload for a track called Skeletal Immortality which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeR0lRiIRYk

Around late 2011 I tried making a Black Metal EP called Nekromantican. Oh my lawd it sounds pretty bad listening to it now but I did have great fun making it. It was never released as I discontinued project 'Lichhood' after I first joined Newgrounds as 'LichLordMusic'. A short Nekromantican 'preview' from the old days I left on one of my old Youtube channels just to remind me what I started off as. It's pretty fascinating in a horrible way I supose haha. A video link to the badness is available here for anyone interested in listening to my begginer roots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huIq7hNg6fs

Over the years I have probably had the most fun playing around with Electro-Industrial. It's got the sheer potential to be absolutely savage and unforgiving sounding or brooding and atmospheric in the right scenario. Admittedly I didn't really start off being able to make it, my older stuff sounds like some half-way lackluster hybrid per-say and it's not really untill around late 2013 that I was able to think "Right, I think i've got it now!" Some of my favorite tracks I have made and uploaded can be found on my newgrounds page. If anyone would like to listen to my current audio I would suggest listening to the tracks 'Host Victim', 'Our CyberLord & Savior' and 'The Artificial Demise'.

I am fan of Katmaestro, Anchorwind, Deshiel, TheHeartgrinder, industrialplayground, L3ak, LeoMDK, LashMush (plus many more) and I am also very fond of the voice-acting work that Piper has done for both me in the track 'Thou 9th Circle' and all of the other projects she has been involved in!

For future collaboration work, I would love to form or be a member of a Newgrounds Audio Super-group between four or five users working on tracks together as a big team. I think it would be a case of whoever is really up for the idea of making one would be the type of person who sounds dedicated towards such a thing and that is the kind of person I would love to collaborate with!"

Seems like you use a huge variety of programs and plugins to create your music. Which programs would you recommend for people who are are just starting out their musical endeavors?

Lich:

"I've literally spent thousands upon thousands on owning and using a huge variety of Soft-Synths, FX Plug-ins and Mastering Plug-ins. I currently use FL Studio 11 x64 as my primary sequencer while I use Adobe Audition CC for my general vocal-recording work and Post-Mastering station for any final touch-up's before a track is released.
My main weapons-of-choice for the tracks I use would be Tone2 Gladiator2 (My workhorse synth unter the pretense as a HCM Soft-synth which is basically a a fancy wave-table with time-morphing tools and other monstrous features), Adam Szabo's JP6K (Roland JP-8000 Supersaw emulator, especially nice for the classic 90's sounding Supersaw leads and bass-work), the Arturia V-Collection (a group of pricey very-close emulations of some of the older sounding hard-synth put into soft-synth form including the Wurlitzer, the Jupiter-8, the Oberheim SEM, the CS-80 and several other emulations), Spectrasonics Omnisphere (still probably the most powerful Cinematic Sample-stacking and Synth-engine to date) and IL Sawer (a very HQ sounding niche soft-synth made by Image-Line which is capable of producing some absolutely brutal-sounding detuned leads, basses and pads), Battery 4 (My favorite Sample-Loaded and Sample-manipulation Drum machine) and Superior Drummer 2 (I have the Metal Foundry pack as well, another favorite of mine as a drum machine, especially for the real and awesome drum samples recorded for it).I have plenty more which I use from time to time (I do run Kontakt and have a couple of Native Instruments, Pinknoise, Sonokinetic and 8DIO libraries) but I could go on forever about them.

For the FX and mastering side, I am mainly a Waves fan-boy. I have the Waves Gold Collection which contains over 30 plug-ins of varying uses along with some individual purchases like NLS, Center, Scheps 73 and the One-Knob series. On the cheaper end of the market I also have alot of Minimal System Instruments compressors to work with which are incredible value for money for the work they are capable of doing, I also have a few Antares plug-ins like Auto-Tune Live, Harmony Engine EVO, Mutator EVO, Mic Mod EFX, Choir AVOX and Duo AVOX. Less used but still handy bits I have include the whole Creative Sonitus FX suite, Ohmforce's Ohmicide (used in all of my Vocal-work for Distorted Grit and Saturation), IL Vocodex, Amplitube 3 Metal Pack (for guitar work) and a few freebie bits here and there for specific uses.

Honestly for users who wish to start making music you will want to probably stick to easier-to-use and powerful solutions either 1st party which can be found in your DAW (for FL Studio users I would recommend PoiZone, Harmor and Sawer) or 3rd party solutions like Sylenth1, Tone2 ElectraX, DUNE 2, LuSH-101, U-he Zebra and please ignore using a ROMPLER like reFX Nexus (flame shield activated), it's good-to-go sounds is very nice and all but I personally think being able to see and understand how synth patches are built up and how parameters work and interact with each other is a very important lesson which will especially help you later on when more appealing and complicated solutions catch your eye.

One more thing for aspiring Musicians, please get a good sound system so you can actually hear what is going on in your Mix. From personal experience I would honestly say if you are a Windows user to invest in an ASIO Soundcard (The M-Audio Audiophile 2496 is going for £40 on Ebay currently as an internal solution or you can use a Focusrite external unit as another solid ASIO and recording Solution) and then get a pair of decent Studio Monitoring Speakers (I'm currently using a Pair of ADAM A5X's but for beginners a slightly cheaper pair may be a more sensible option to look around for)."

Aside from being active on Newgrounds, you also have your own Soundcloud. Which features of Soundcloud would you like seeing implemented for the Newgrounds Audio Portal?

Lich:

"I think Soundcloud's flexible options of turning Downloads on and off is a very handy feature mainly for people who want to show off uncompleted demo's or showcase specific work they don't want mass distributed easily (yes there are workaround ways as to puling audio straight off of a page unfortunately). The option to see which country your listerners/viewers are coming from is a very nice feature which I would be happy to see on Newgrounds if the admin team ever considered adding new features for both audio and flash artists."

You are currently working on your very first album, Dystopian Hivemind. Tell my readers what kind of work goes into planning and working on an album and what obstacles and successes you had over the time you worked on it so far.

Lich:

"I'm sorry to say that Dystopian Hivemind ended us as a failure due to a bad combination of inexperience, little planning, rushing it and just sheer disinterest for getting it finished as time went on. But I am back on the road as the current album-in-work 'Ascended In Agony' is around 80% done now, all I realistically need to do is finish off one more track, abit of mastering and vocal work and then I can release it.

For those who are planning on releasing an album, the first and most important rule would be to set a clear direction as to how you want your album to progress, sound and feature. If you can think of an awesome idea for one or two tracks and then get completely lost with the rest of it, consider releasing a small EP or something instead. You'll want all of your tracks to have the same high quality of standards to feature throughout the whole production.

The second thing to consider is if you are going to set a deadline. One reason why Dystopian Hivemind flopped for me would be how I tried to rush a release for it and didn't put my absolute best into it. While one or two tracks sounded pretty good, the rest of it was an unfortunate flop.

The last and final thing about making an album is don't get too upset if it ends up as a failure. It's a pretty shitty moment when you finally have to admit to yourself, "Yep, I've fucked up. No release would be better than a half-ass release". Take a break, release some individual tracks here and there instead, better yourself as a musician and then try again in a year or so when you have some fresh and better ideas and management for it all.

Anyway, with Dystopian Hivemind out of the way I have almost finished Ascended Through Agony. A little trick which has kept me going is to actually make and release to Newgrounds sort of Pre-release editions to try and get a general idea as to how it is going to sound. 'Host Victim' is one example, I made that for three different reasons in one (mainly for the album). All you have to do is just release a lossless High Quality WAV version upon the release with the rest of the album and offer a reasonable deal. I'm offering the whole album for free to any of my subscribed fans on Newgrounds and for everyone else, a very cheap and reasonable price where 100% of the earnings for it will be re-injected into making even more awesome music for the fans in the future. Music is a hobby, not a job so I like to pace myself nowadays and have fun doing it. Otherwise it'll all end up like Dystopian Hivemind, a rushed failure."

Every person has secrets. Can you tell one of yours or something else that we didn't know about you yet?

Lich:

"When I drink and get absolutely trashed I like to load up Spotify or even the Newgrounds audio portal and Industrial Dance to tracks while wearing my mask, spiked goggles and either my Nachtmahr or God Module shirt just for good luck. On the secret of course haha.

Alternatively I have a few recordings of me trying to rap utter nonsense down my Shure SM58 Mic. They shall never be released to the public for a variety of reasons I'm not going to share.
Lastly, I am capable of singing clean in the tone and style of a Futurepop singer but I'm too weary of getting a bad response for it to immediately release a track of it all done and recorded onto Newgrounds. Sometime soon I shall man-mode the rest of the track and recording and upload it anyway no matter how bad it is!"

What can we expect from you in the future, Lich?

Lich:

"Well apart from the eventual release of the album 'Ascended Through Agony', I have a few other bits being processed in the background including my entry into the NGAU contest in the audio forum, a few metal tracks which have been a long time coming for release, a Futurepop track styled in the influence of Rotersand & Icon of Coil and many more collaborative releases with other Newgrounds users.

I'll be sticking around on Newgrounds for hopefully a long time so for anyone who is interested in asking me any questions, fell free to ask away and I'll be happy to answer anything to the best of my ability. I would like to thank you Asandir for giving me the opportunity to be interviewed and the community of Newgrounds for being awesome as well. See you all around!"
